The Ignite Reading with Kindles campaign will need the support of faculty, students, and
parents. These people will provide snacks and drinks for the Kindle Kare after school
program. Community leaders, local newspapers, and radio stations will announce Kindle
Kare after school dates and public library kindle reading in order to promote the events.
The Communities and School after school program will utilize Kindles to ignite reading
at the other grade levels. The public library will allow patrons to read with Kindles during
the summer months to ignite reading in the community. Teachers and media specialist
will run Accelerated Reader reports and conduct surveys as well as analyze CRCT data to
determine success and need for improvement areas. The media specialist will
continuously have to find funds to purchase new Kindle books. The media specialist,
along with student cadets, will update the Kindle Kings bulletin board and the top ten
Kindle books on the Destiny online library catalog system.
Abstract/Summary (required)
The Ignite Reading Campaign with Kindles is a program used to increase reading in the
community and to improve the reading ability of all students. The students will be
allowed to vote for Kindle books. The chosen books will be downloaded. The students
will check out Kindles from their reading teacher. The student will be asked to share the
Kindle with someone while the Kindle is checked out. The school will have after school
Kindle read-ins. Other after school programs will utilize the Kindles as well. The public
library will allow patrons to read with Kindles during the summer months.
Describe your goals for student achievement and how you will measure each
outcome. (required)
The goals for student achievement are to increase the reading ability of all students. This
will be measured by using the STAR testing program as well as reading CRCT scores.
The STAR will be given once every nine weeks to measure reading growth. Reading
CRCT scores from the previous year will be compared to the current year. Bleckley
Middle School will measure the increase in reading by charting Kindle checkouts and by
the number of students who attend Kindle after school specials. A charting system will be
utilized to measure the community's use of the Kindle during the summer months as well
as after school tutoring programs.
Describe the student need for this work. (required)
Our county has a sixty-nine percent free or reduced lunch rate. With this rate, the
majority of our students can't afford to purchase books. In order to give our students
equal access to reading materials the school must provide it. The current funding of
$13.03 per full time student does not allow our library to purchase these needed materials
for sixty-nine percent of our almost six hundred student population. With the Kindle,
many downloads are free or cost very little. Our county illiteracy rate in 2003 was
seventeen percent; however, community leaders and teachers argue the rate has
increased. This fact proves that the Kindles must be utilized in the community too. If
people can't read, it's difficult to teach themselves. With a Kindle the stigma of reading
lower level materials disappears. No one will know what level each child or adult is
reading. The improvement in reading will occur because new words and material can be
taught to them by Kindle read aloud material. On another note, our burglary and gang
activity has increased. Many of these crimes are committed by adolescents. If we as a
community can ignite the fire for reading, adolescents will have reading that entertains
them instead of crime.
Describe the activities in which you and your students will engage to reach your
goals. (required)
As stated before, the students and teachers will use the Kindles in the classroom. The
student will then have to share the book read with someone. This sharing will promote
the book to another; thereby, increasing reading. Teachers will test the students using the
STAR program and reading CRCT scores to measure reading growth. Students will also
take Accelerated Reader quizzes to ensure comprehension and true reading of the book.
A bulletin board titled Kindle Kings will be displayed in the media center. Tickets with
students' names and books read will be displayed. During Kindle Care after school
specials, students will read with Kindles and share their reading with parents, friends,
faculty, or community volunteers. This will increase reading in the community and ignite
others to the importance of reading. The public library will utilize the Kindles during the
summer months. Adults' use of the Kindles will increase reading in the adult world-once
again spreading the importance of reading to the world outside of the school building.
After school tutoring programs will use the Kindles in order to assist students with
reading. This use improves students' opinion of reading; therefore, spreading reading as
an enjoyable activity instead of a boring, worksheet filled activity. Each year the students
will be allowed to vote and choose the books to download to the Kindle. Students' book
choice will increase the variety of books offered to students which in turn will increase
reading. A survey will be given at the end of the year. Students will give their opinions
and advice on the use of Kindles in order to improve Kindle use.
