Career Review

The field of diagnostic cardiovascular sonography is an interesting realm of medical

science, enabling a person to reach into the lives of others and allowing compassion to play an

outstanding role in practice. Cardiovascular sonography is one of the most noninvasive methods

of diagnosis; where the technician uses special imaging equipment to view the patient's veins,

arteries, valves, and blood vessels, as well as the chambers of the heart. The performance and

low level of intrusion allows patients to feel more at ease with the procedure. This would also

implies that sonography as a practice presents a more inviting and trusting atmosphere for

potentially apprehensive patients. Cardiovascular sonography is an ideal career path for any

wanting to get involved quickly and help others in a new and growing medical practice with

stability and possibilities beyond the practice.

Cardiovascular sonography and the role the job plays in the care of patients; as a practice

is the imaging of the patient’s veins, arteries, valves, and blood vessels, as well as the chambers

of the patients' heart (“A Day In the Life of a Cardiovascular Sonographer”). In other words, as a

cardiovascular ultrasound technician, the technician works using ultrasound to view the patient's

heart and seek critical information to provide information to create a diagnosis for the patient and

their physician. This is vital information that only qualified technicians in their practice are

capable of providing. Occasionally, technicians might even be present for a heart operation or

procedure the doctor is performing. This field also offers a reassuring sensation of gratification

and fulfillment at the end of each day, knowing that their part was done to reach and improve

others' lives.

Cardiovascular Sonography is a career choice perfect for those wanting to enter the

healthcare field relatively quickly. With all the correct prerequisites, a potential student can enter

the program and graduate completely certified and trained in as little as one year, although a two-

year program is more commonly taken, as opposed to the one-year intensive course. There are

different prerequisite requirements for that specific program, including a two-year Associates

degree in another healthcare field such as nursing or medical sonography. There are also four-

year Bachelor programs available; however, many institutions require only a two-year degree. A

benefit of less schooling required is the cost efficiency it allows, and much of the money spent

on schooling can be earned back in the first year of practice.

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the field of sonography has a 14%

growth increase average, which is “much faster than average.” As well as an expected

employment rate increase of 18,000 jobs between 2018-2028. It was even ranked in an article in

U.S. News as “the #4 in terms of best healthcare support jobs” (Ultrasound Schools Info). The

salary of diagnostic sonographers ranges from $68,000 as an Ob/GYN sonographer, to $112,000

as a Neuro sonographer. The cause of the sudden increase in the demand for cardiovascular

sonographers links back to the fact that over the next decade the “aging baby boomer

population” will require the medical attention that sonographers provide via new medical

equipment used for diagnosis. The BLS states that “the need to diagnose medical conditions —

such as blood clots and heart disease — will likely increase. Imaging technology is a tool used in

making these diagnoses.” (EPCI University). In addition, sonography has easily one of the least
Shelton 3

stressful work environments. In 2017, diagnostic medical sonographers were “rated as the least

stressful job” (Forbes).

Cardiovascular sonography also benefits as a gateway to the rest of the medical field

should a technician decide to expand beyond the field of diagnostic sonography. The education

required for diagnostic sonography can account for and carry over as prerequisites for potential

students seeking their BSN after already acquiring the previous certification. Sonography

additionally plays as a useful career to gain experience in a part of the medical field. With

relatively relaxed hours and low-stress situations in the day-to-day practice, technicians have a

peaceful introduction to the medical field that can allow them to become familiar with the overall

environment. Technicians will already have built the interpersonal interactions with both patients

and superior physicians and be accustomed to the standards and social interactions built and

required in the medical field.

Overall, diagnostic cardiovascular sonography is a phenomenal career prospect to be

considered by any person with a desire to get involved in the medical field. With accelerated

education options, high job demand and growth expectation making availability high, easy hours

and guaranteed stability as well as high initial salary, it is arguably one of the best jobs currently

in the medical field. It additionally provides possibilities beyond the parameters of diagnostic

sonography within itself, allowing for even more growth in a career path. It also provides

gratification in regards to the appeal for a fulfilling reassurance of compassion being exhibited in

the day-to-day work as a technician. Interacting with the patients in need of medical attention

and care can bring this satisfaction to practitioners. In conclusion, diagnostic cardiovascular

sonography should be considered by any with an interest in the medical field seeking a high

salary, reasonable hours, and quick education and engagement.
