Expressing myself in different ways

Child/Tama: Abdihafid. Teacher/Kaiako: Jane. Date: 30 October/ Whiringa-ā-nuku 2019

My mat, my mat. My mat, teacher. You knew that you should have a placemat and you could
see that the other children all had their own mats. Even though you were hungry and it took
some time to locate your mat, you wouldn’t even put your lunch box on the table until your mat
was in position. 7 Oct 19

Expressing myself through song

and movement: You enjoyed
joining in at mat time. You didn’t
know the words to the song but
you copied T Catherine and the
other children with the actions. 8

Expressing myself through art: Abdi, you saw the other

children, including your sister Najma, painting with cotton
buds. You chose red and you made a few squiggles on
the page. After that you weren’t interested any more. I suggested you could use a different
colour. I admired how colourful Najma’s was, and you looked over at her masterpiece, but that
still didn’t inspire you to do anymore. 8 Oct 19

Looking at your learning story:

There are lots of messages in
books and here is a special
book all about you, Abdihafid.
It’s your learning story! You
found it on the shelf and
brought it over to the table for
a closer examination. You
studied each photo and I
provided commentary about
what was happening in each
photo. On the last page you
were excited to see a photo of
you with T Khadija at the
Muslim community Eid Fest.
You removed this page from
your book and carried it around
the room and repeatedly
pointed to the photo, saying in
wonder T Khadija, T Khadija.
Oh, Abdi she is in Jordan now
and she misses you too. 8 Oct

Dance, Pray, Act
Child/Tama:Abdihafid. Teacher/Kaiako:Jane. Date: 20 November/Whiringa-ā-rangi 19

It was too wet to play outside but we all enjoyed this

special friendship song. All the tamariki sat in a circle
while one child walked around the circle deciding who to
choose to play with. Your sister, Najma, chose you as her
friend! You were a little hesitant and self conscious. With
T Catherine’s encouragement, you eventually stood up
and held hands with Najma and frolicked in the circle. He
pai to konikoni - Good dancing! 24 Oct 19

Ira - Look at that! Abdihafid, the faithful worshipper of Allah, is praying. You were very serious
in your prayer. You laid down a prayer mat, removed your shoes and prayed. You made all
the correct movements in the correct order, you moved your lips as you recited Qur’an and
look at the khushoo’! Ma sha’allah. You allowed yourself a little grin when you realised I was
taking your photo. I asked if you would like to wear a dishdasha in the prayer and I held it up
to show you. You shook your head and said: No. No. Prayer is not something new for you. I
have seen you regularly in the masjid with you Baba when he comes to prayer. 11 Nov 19
Thank you, Abdi for taking care of our vegetable garden.
You tried to tug the watering can from Najma’s hands. I
said: Abdi, you need to ask Najma for a turn. Say Najma,
can I have a turn after you? You said: My turn, my turn. 2

At morning tea time you enjoy a cracker if you eat all the
fruit first. When I pass it to you, I encourage you to say:
Thank you, T Jane. You are learning, Abdi, and now if I
pause in handing over the cracker you are prompted to
say: Thank you, T Jane. Nov 19

Dramatic Play: On Friday 1 November we had a special excursion to the Theatre Royal to
watch Mr McGee and the Biting Flea. You enjoyed the spectacle and I noticed you were
focused and engaged for the whole 45 minute performance. You laughed when that funny Mr
McGee did silly things like look for the cow that kept hiding from him.
You enjoy props in your play. The lion costume is a favourite and this day you added
sunglasses as well. What a cool lion! Later when we went outside you passed over the hard
hats and hi-viz vests for the head phones. You slipped them on and then you didn’t take them
off until it was time to go back inside. 6 Nov 19
