Life in a Glass Box

Biosphere Challenge
Challenge: Create a sustainable
ecosystem inside your glass terrarium
only using resources around our school.
Choose a focus area for your goal:
-Grow new plants
-Sustain spider population
-Create one!

2
Week Two: Ecosystem Web

Make a web design using the 5 non

living things (abiotic) and 5 living
things (biotic) you chose.

3
Week 3:
Atmosphere
Two weeks have passed.
Measure the amount of
carbon dioxide and oxygen
levels that are in your
terrarium.
4
Week 4:
Write down your 10
abiotic/biotic factors and
put them in a jar, pick one
and remove it from your
biosphere.
Predict what do you thing will happen.
Week 6: Changes
Have you noticed any significant changes.

Edit your ecosystem web to the biotic and abiotic factors

that are now occurring inside your biosphere.

» Any chemical changes?

» Any physical changes?
» Why are these changes occurring?

6
Week 7: Open up your biosphere, edit
or change anything to improve the
sustainability of life

Challenge 2: You can not add

the resource that was taken
out in week 4, you must
figure out how to sustain all
the life in the biosphere by
either adding or removing
your resources

7
Week 8: Complete a diagram using your biosphere of the different types of cycles

» Food Web
» Carbon Cycle
» Water Cycle
» Oxygen Cycle
» Any others?

Use all of your biotic and abiotic factors in your cycles.

8
Week 9: Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen levels
» Measure the levels in your biosphere

Is there a difference? Why or Why not?

9
Week 10: Final Results
Open up your biosphere and analyze!
» Measure your final carbon dioxide and oxygen
levels.
» Did you reach your initial goal?
» What would you have done differently?
Sustain your biosphere to Create a new biosphere
» Make your final ecosystem web diagram and
withstand against a natural ecosystem by introducing an

» Put all your results together to showcase your

biosphere!

Prove that you can increase Prove that your biosphere is
