What is Reading Comprehension?
Reading Comprehension is the ability to
"read, understand, process, and recall what
was just read" (Rutzler, 2017). Decoding the
text into words is only one part of reading.
Good readers use comprehension to
understand what it is that they are
reading. This allows students to be
"engaged, active, and purposeful readers
when they have reading comprehension
strategies on hand".
Why is Reading Comprehension
important to teach?
Reading Comprehension is important to
teach because it "helps readers think -
interact with the text and construct
meaning while they read" (Gear, 2019).
Teaching students reading comprehension
strategies "provides students with the tools
to become more thoughtful and meaningful
readers as well as how to become “meta-
cognitive” or aware of their thinking
while they read" (Gear, 2019). Teachers
always include reading time during the
school day but often teachers neglect to
