At the time of writing, we have just commemorated another Armistice Day, this year the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
Most people will have heard of Harry Billinge, who was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers. He has become quite a
celebrity. However, this humble man is one of the few left alive who can recall the D-Day landing and at the age of 93,
still manages to get us to shed a tear. Harry has raised £22,442 for a memorial at Gold Beach (£1 for every soldier who
perished). On Breakfast TV he said ‘I had a job to do for these wonderful young men. I am not the hero they are. It is

Revival of Best Kept Village
competition reaps rewards
Tarporley came runners up in the Best Kept Village 2019
awards. The team, lead by Lisa Miller, and all the volunteers
deserve this recognition for all the hard work and effort put
in. Tarporley was pipped at the post by the overall competition
winners, Disley. Tarporley also received a Little Gem Award
for the area around the benches in front of St Helen’s Church.
The village was judged on 6 sections. These included
appearance of shops, paved areas, carparks, bus shelters,
Public Houses, Village Hall, War Memorials, church yards,
plays areas, tidiness of verges, hedges etc, litterbins and dog
fowling to name a few.
Here are a few of the comments from the judging panel.
Shops and shop windows of a very good standard - bus shelters of a high standard - public car parks
of a very high standard - notice boards clean, up to date and well maintained - War Memorial Hospital
very neat and tidy with lovely flowers - the Community Centre and surrounds of a very high standard,
clean, tidy, litter free and user friendly – the area surrounding St Helen’s Church is a credit to the
parishioners – particularly like the “Happy to Chat” bench – the Art Walk interesting and innovative
area which is a credit to the young people who have contributed – floral displays of a good standard and
hanging baskets on lamp posts were excellent.
Again, a big thank you to all involved in achieving these standards. A full report from the judge of the
Best Kept Village is now available to view on the Parish Council Notice Board close to Latte Da.
Poppy Lane Car Park open

First the old Royal British Legion Hall was knocked down and then its car park and part of the
allotments became a building site. While the ten houses were being built, thanks to a temporary path,
both the bowling club and the rest of the allotments continued to function.
Now at long last the houses have been completed, the car park is back in use for the village, and the
Primary School children have returned to using the gate off the car park into the school grounds
each morning and afternoon. The allotment holders and the bowling club members have access
up the paved road passed the houses up to the land. The allotment holders and the bowlers have
spent considerable time tidying up the allotments and bowling green land, after a period of neglect
while the future of the land was in doubt. There’s a new gate and notice board and plans for further
improvements are in place.
This site has a new name – Poppy Lane. The Parish Council is all but ready to take procession of the
carpark, the allotments and the bowling club. So, job done after a long period of disruption for the
village and in particular for the school children, their parents and carers, the allotment holders and

Parish Council Meetings

Parish Council meetings. Second Monday of the month (except August) in either the Committee
Room or the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community
Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can
address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the
Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual
councillors on an informal basis.

Well done Tarporley for saving all this land
from being built on (as was first proposed by the
developer) and for keeping the bowling club, a
significant part of the allotments and the carpark.
It was worth the fight, and it all goes to show
the advantages of Tarporley having a robust
Neighbourhood Plan, because that stopped the site
being lost to an estate of houses.

Brook Road Outdoor Sports and Recreation Update
Works on site have continued to be severely disrupted by the extremely wet autumn weather. The
contractor has been unable to make any significant progress on the main pitch works or any other
part of the soft landscaping. Saturation of the ground has made the site unworkable. However,
good progress has been made on the car park, fencing, and other works which are less weather
dependent.
The disruption caused by the weather means that the works are
now approximately 6 weeks behind the agreed programme and,
unfortunately, it is now clear that the opportunity to seed the playing
pitch prior to the winter has been lost. This will now have to be
postponed until the spring, meaning that it is unlikely to be available
for playing at the start of the 2020/21 season – Our Landscape
Architect has advised that playing a newly sown pitch too early, before the root structure has
matured, could risk damaging the drainage of the topsoil as well as the grass itself, despite the fact
that it may appear to be sufficiently ‘greened’.
Together with CWaC, who are administering the works on our behalf, and the landscape
contractor, the Parish Council are exploring all opportunities to mitigate the delay, but we have
to accept that once the less weather dependent work has been completed, it is likely that the pitch
and soft landscaping works will have to be abandoned until the site dries up, which may not be
until spring next year.
Equipment ranges for the outdoor gym and trim trail are being reviewed and drawings updated
with suitable locations, in readiness for community consultation and final selection. This
equipment will be one of the last items to be installed so, as a result of the weather delays, it is now
proposed to hold the consultation in the New Year.

The Holly and the Ivy
The holly and the ivy,
when they are both full grown,

of all the trees that are in the wood

There’s no doubt that holly and ivy are synonymous with
Christmas.
This dates back to pre-Christian era when pagans used evergreen
decorations in their mid-winter celebrations. It’s not hard to see why they
were attracted to these beautiful plants which offer a promise of better times
to come during the most barren time of the year.
Early Christians adopted them too and imbued holly particularly with
Christian symbolism. In the carol, ivy isn’t actually mentioned again until
the last verse which is a repeat of the first. It has a cameo role because of
earlier songs, such as ‘The Contest of The Ivy and The Holly,’ in which the
attributes of holly (male) and ivy (female) are compared. Our ancestors
lived close to the earth and the seasons and were open to symbolism. As
modern gardeners we might be sceptical of the symbolism, but we can
embrace the glory of these seasonal plants.
Ivy (Hedera) comes in many sizes, from the tiny-leaved ‘Spetchley’ to
the hand-sized leaves of ‘Maple Leaf’. It also comes in a beautiful variety
of colours from the rich green, crimped leaves of ‘Parsley crested’ which
makes great ground cover, to the gorgeous red-stemmed yellow leaves of the
climber ‘Sunrise’.
For winter baskets I’d recommend the lime-green ‘Ursula’ and her grey-leaved
friend ‘Frederick’.
Ivy is a doddle to grow. There are only a few things to remember. Cut it back in
spring to encourage new growth and take cuttings between October and March
when the growth is woody. Yellow varieties need sunshine and don’t let any of it
grow into your eaves. Other than that, it is your undemanding gardening friend.
Holly (Ilex) is pretty easy-going too. It will grow almost anywhere except really
water-logged soil. It’s tolerant of pollution, salt and wind and grows really
slowly, so it’s great for small gardens in the city and by the sea.
Protect it from rabbits if they frequent your garden as they love to eat the bark.
Trim it in August if you have to and remove plain green shoots on variegated
varieties. Take cuttings in the late summer or autumn. It does resent root
disturbance once it’s established so make sure you plant it in the right place first
time.
Hollies are male or female but not necessarily named to help you distinguish.
‘Silver Queen’ is actually male and ‘Martin’ is female! You’ll need both for berries
so talk to an expert at the nursery or garden centre to be sure…or google the
answer on your phone! If you only have room for one holly bush, grow a self-
fertile variety such as ‘J C Van Tol’.

Bonfire was hot stuff
Saturday 2nd November was the date for the annual 1st Tarporley Scouts bonfire and
fireworks display. After a soggy day, they were lucky that the rain held off for the
event itself, and the crowds poured in to the field next to the Lychgate. Straw had been
put down to help with the mud, but it’s safe to say you had to watch your step! The
firework display was as spectacular as ever, and the bonfire burned brightly in the clear
November sky.
The organisers at 1st Tarporley Scouts would like to thank each and every person who
contributed in any way to the event, as well as everyone who supported them by visiting
on the night.

Artists return from Italian tour

Sixth form art students have just returned from
an inspirational week in Tuscany exploring the
Renaissance period, producing ambitious work and
drawing from the Tuscan landscape having been
successful in securing a place on the prestigious
Italian Art education tour for Cheshire schools.
Pupils Ciara Bolt-Wilson, Chloe Fairlie, Izzy Lewin
and Hannah Whelan all submitted applications back
in spring this year and following a rigorous interview
with a scrutiny of their portfolio all four pupils were
offered a place on the tour.
Many pupils who attend the tour which has run since
1984 have used the opportunity as a springboard to
gain places at Ruskin, Oxford and the Royal Academy,
London.
Following the week immersed in Italy pupil Izzy
Lewin was awarded the Best Sketchbook award in
her group, Ciara Bolt Wilson secured ‘The Spirit of
Tuscany’ award and Hannah Whelan was awarded
‘Best Overall Student’.

An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac
arrest. It’s a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyse the heart’s rhythm and,
if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective
rhythm.
Of course, you can – and should – request the assistance of trained medical professionals. However,
when a 999 call is made for a cardiac arrest, time is of the absolute essence, because for every minute
defibrillation is delayed, the odds of survival are reduced by approximately 10%. So, having access to
and AED and knowing how to use one, is critical. If you don’t already know how to use an AED then
guidance will be given by the 999 call-handler and also on the device itself. There are also free courses
available to learn how to use an AED and provide lifesaving interventions. If you are interested, please
contact the Parish Council Clerk, who will put you in contact with those who run such courses.

The Introvert’s Guide to
the Office Christmas Party
Office Christmas parties are queer affairs where we drink and socialise with folk we might
not choose to drink and socialise with on any other night of the year. At best they offer a
bit of cringeworthy fun, at worst they strike fear into our hearts. Introverts in particular
struggle with enforced bonhomie at large events.
For those of us who aren’t social butterflies, what are our
options? Do we have to endure the occasion, or might it be
possible to enjoy it?
Dutch courage may seem like the only way to get
through the evening but tanking up on alcohol will
almost certainly make things worse. Although it’s
a party in name, remember this is a work-related
event so limit your alcohol intake to ensure you
remain in control of your faculties, especially if
under the influence you feel you might be tempted
to give vent to your feelings of frustration at being
passed over for promotion! A good rule of thumb
is no more than two alcoholic drinks at any work
function...even a festive one.
It is estimated that at least 25% of the population
are introverts so at least a quarter of your co-workers
probably feel like you do about the party. Look for
people standing on the edge, fidgeting with their
glass and looking awkward. These are your people so
take a deep breath and strike up a conversation with
them. Concentrate on effective eye contact when you
introduce yourself. Get into the habit of noticing the
other person’s eye colour. Don’t worry about remembering
it or commenting on it, just notice it. This helps to create an
instant non-verbal connection and build rapport. It makes you
seem confident, trustworthy and likeable.
Have a few safe conversation topics in your armoury: good
ones are the weather, movies, restaurants, books (you
can either find common ground or ask for and offer
recommendations), and light news topics (steer clear
of Brexit though, and anything to do with the election).
Also avoid work talk, that’s not the point of the event.
If you’re stuck in a conversation with someone you
find offensive, dull or with whom you have nothing in
common it can be hard to keep a conversation going. A
polite ‘So nice to chat with you, catch you later...’ should be
an adequate sign-off as you make your leave. The point of a party
is to mingle so this won’t seem unfriendly.
Remember - even if you would rather undergo root canal surgery
than attend the office party it’s worth showing your face. Go along,
have a drink and a mince pie then make a polite-but-early exit if you
really can’t cope. People won’t generally mind or even remember that
you left early but they might question why you didn’t show up at all.

Tarporley remembers
There was a great turn-out for the Tarporley Remembrance Parade in November.
Anna, from Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre, and Cheshire Constabulary Drum and Bands led the
parade, followed by the Queen’s Representative Alistair Stoddart, Tarporley RBL Branch, Tarporley ACF
detachment, police, ambulance services, Tarporley Memorial Hospital, Rotary Club, parish council,
Tarporley Fire Brigade, Cubs, Scouts, Beavers, Brownies, Girl Guides, Tarporley High School & Primary
School and many more!
There were also lots of onlookers who lined the streets watching the parade go by.
As every year, the parade visited Tarporley Memorial Hospital to lay a wreath, sing a hymn and make
a prayer. It was a great chance for those in the hospital to see the parade up close and personal, and a
quick hello to Anna as she walked past.
Connor Diskin said: “We had a great service from St. Helens Church with reference to Lion King! The
church was once again overfilling, but those stood outside could watch the TV’s live streaming the
service which is also on YouTube and can be found by searching Tarporley RBL.
“The Cheshire Constabulary Drum and Bands blew people away with an amazing
performance and a 4 person last post. Not to mention Anna who gazed above the crowds as
she strode through the streets standing above the crowds.
“A big thank you to Tarporley 6th Form too for helping with the live stream. Thank you to all
who were involved and attended on the day for making it such a successful parade!”
