Neston’s Spooky

What we can provide
Due to our long experience and our caring approach we offer a fully
rounded and holistic approach to legal matters, writes Jackie Campion,
who has over 25 years’ experience.
If I use Doris* as an example who is a lovely elderly lady we have recently helped.
Doris came to us with her daughter some time ago , she was quite lost and anxious . Her
husband sadly lives with dementia and was still at the family home in a semi remote part of
The Wirral in a large house. It was clear that Doris needed help. We listened and gave advice
about Wills (already in place) putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place for Doris and
possibly Court of Protection application for her husband.
However at the stage the immediate issues were really more practical and not even legal
and Doris was a little overwhelmed . We gave details of local care homes, who to contact
and a local dementia charity for support . The family then went away to deal with the really
emotional part of arranging a place for the husband to live as he clearly needed full time care.
We kept in touch.
When the situation was a little more settled we have since dealt with the LPAs, applied to the
Court of Protection for the husband and will shortly assist Doris and the family in selling her
home to move to a property more suitable for her needs and not as remote.
Along the way we have firmly established a strong relationship with Doris and
her daughter.
We have recommended social events supported by a local charity and now
that Doris is more settled and knows she has done the best thing for herself
and her husband she is much more relaxed and we all love to see her when
she pops in.
We really do offer a full wrap around service and we go the extra mile,
because we genuinely care and we like to help. Plus we are experts.
* ‘Doris’ is not her real name

Awards aplenty for tidy town
Neston has scooped a number of awards in this year’s Best Kept Village Competition
organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council. The entry was made jointly by Neston Town
Council and the Neston Civic Society.
The town was runner-up in the category for towns with a population between 5,000 and
10,000.
Neston took the ‘Little Gem’ accolade, with judges citing the commemorative bench in Little
Neston, and the ‘Most Improved Award’.
Parkgate came 4th in its category and received a ‘Little Gem’ award for the ‘Hi-C’ boat on the
middle slip.
The judges were particularly impressed by the hanging baskets and “wonderful variety of
floral displays”.
They went on to comment that the railway station and primary and secondary school areas
had well maintained flower troughs, well placed bins and showed no evidence of litter,
graffiti, dog fouling or weeds. They particularly liked the all-round facilities at Stanney Fields
Park. Up to date notice boards along with the history boards were enjoyed by the judges and
they found them to be well maintained.
Their special note to Neston was “Neston is a very pleasant town with a good variety
of shops and free parking which makes it a great place to stop and visit. Together with
excellent access for walkers and cyclists and views of the Dee Estuary and Welsh Hills, it can
be enjoyed by all. The Town and Village caters for both young and old alike, with plenty of
amenities and a good selection of places to eat, socialise and relax. A very special place to
live and visit, a joy to judge.”

The Players do Christmas
After four years of great success with performing war themed plays
each November to commemorate the centenary of WW1, Neston
Players are taking a rather different approach for winter 2019.
An 11 strong cast will perform the popular The Flint Street Nativity by Tim
Firth from Wednesday 4th
December 2019 – Saturday 7th December.
The director is Carole Goodwin, a face people may recognise from
treading the boards with Neston Players over the years in performances
such as: ‘A Walk Through Time’, ‘Enchanted April’, ‘The Odd Couple’ and last year’s ‘Delval
Divas’.”
The cast is as follows: Innkeeper - Ross Hawley; Mary - Jenny Dewhirst; Wise Gold - Pam
Button; Shepherd - Paula Condliffe-Hughes; Gabriel - Jenny Clement; Star of Bethlehem -
Gordon Wallis; Angel - Emma Griffiths; Narrator - Sarah McGinty; Herod/Joseph - Matthew
Harvey; Wise Frankincense - Callum New; Ass - Alan Binns.
The Flint Street Nativity focuses on Mrs Horrocks class as they prepare for their Christmas
Nativity, some are reluctant performers, others determined to be the star of the show.
Frankincense is worried about being sent to the special unit, Gabriel is desperate to be Mary
and Herod just wants to play Question of Sport. This ensemble piece acted by adults shows
the innocent fun, chaos and sheer exuberance of children let loose on the stage! When the
parents arrive we see just why some of the children behave as they do!

Volunteers’ pride as Neston
achieves Fairtrade status
Neston is now officially a Fairtrade Town, after making a resolution to actively
promote Fairtrade to consumers, businesses and community groups in the area.
Status is achieved by promoting and selling fairtrade products and gaining
support through the local council.
Cllr Louise Gittins, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council and Local
Member for Little Neston said: “I’m very proud of the work done by the steering
group, many congratulations, their hard work has been highlighted in the
feedback from the Fairtrade Foundation, who said it is not often that a town’s
initial application is already as strong and comprehensive as yours.”
Margaret Heibel, who led the Neston Fairtrade application said: “This is such
good news, the feedback we received from the Fairtrade application included:
It is wonderful to see that Fairtrade is really becoming a part of the Neston
community through the active support shown by the groups, organisations and
businesses.
“We are impressed with the events held at some of the schools such as the
Fairtrade breakfast as St Winefride’s Primary school and the Fairtrade break and
café at Woodfall Primary school for Fairtrade Fortnight.
“We were really pleased to read that all churches have made a commitment
to Fairtrade and we hope that as a result, members of the congregation have
become more aware of Fairtrade and what it means for farmers in developing
countries. Finally, Our thanks to Ness & Little Ness WI, Neston Community &
Youth Centre and Neston Civic Society for their support and we hope that they
will continue to be a part of the Neston Fairtrade Town campaign in the future.”

The McDonagh family are delighted with the wonderful support they have received since taking over
Morning Noon Night in August. Following the re-brand last month to The Blue Bicycle, along with the
arrival of the new coffee blend from Ginger Cat Coffee, Paul (Dad, Director & Chef) & Sophie
(Daughter & Front of House Manager) have welcomed new customers as well as many existing ones.
The family-run cafe, at 10 The Cross, Neston, has proved incredibly popular and is a great addition to
the high street. Visitors have been impressed by the friendly service and home-cooked produce, with
fresh cakes a particular favourite. The new menu has proven popular and can be accompanied by a
glass of wine, beer or Prosecco.
The first-floor lounge has been redecorated to meet the extra demand - and it is ideal for events with
family, friends or for business meetings.

This week, the pupils from St Winefride’s were immersed into story,

school brilliantly in both sporting events. They showed great skill in their
going closely contested matches, winning many and losing few. Sport at St Wine-

Challenges at the
Conway Centre!
The sun was shining
as the Year 6 class
embarked upon their
weeklong residential
tory, at the Conway
their Centre in Anglesey. The children had a wonderful
they time and made lots of fantastic memories. They
they engaged in a variety of activities such as canoeing and abseiling; gorge
her – walking; zip wiring and low rope team building activities and they enjoyed
tions some time being creative in the art studio. The school is incredibly proud of
eting all the children. They pushed themselves out of their comfort zones and
overcame fears, giving them a sense of achievement and self-pride. Showing
care and encouragement for one another, the children impressed the
instructors at the centre, who commented upon their hard work,
perseverance, courage and teamwork, as well as their superb manners and
behaviour. At St Winefride’s, the children are given many opportunities to
experience a wide range of activities and visit new places. The school believes
that enriching the curriculum for all its pupils is of paramount importance.

The Introvert’s Guide to
the Office Christmas Party
Office Christmas parties are queer affairs where we drink and socialise with folk we might
not choose to drink and socialise with on any other night of the year. At best they offer a
bit of cringeworthy fun, at worst they strike fear into our hearts. Introverts in particular
struggle with enforced bonhomie at large events.
For those of us who aren’t social butterflies, what are our
options? Do we have to endure the occasion, or might it be
possible to enjoy it?
Dutch courage may seem like the only way to get
through the evening but tanking up on alcohol will
almost certainly make things worse. Although it’s
a party in name, remember this is a work-related
event so limit your alcohol intake to ensure you
remain in control of your faculties, especially if
under the influence you feel you might be tempted
to give vent to your feelings of frustration at being
passed over for promotion! A good rule of thumb
is no more than two alcoholic drinks at any work
function...even a festive one.
It is estimated that at least 25% of the population
are introverts so at least a quarter of your co-workers
probably feel like you do about the party. Look for
people standing on the edge, fidgeting with their
glass and looking awkward. These are your people so
take a deep breath and strike up a conversation with
them. Concentrate on effective eye contact when you
introduce yourself. Get into the habit of noticing the
other person’s eye colour. Don’t worry about remembering
it or commenting on it, just notice it. This helps to create an
instant non-verbal connection and build rapport. It makes you
seem confident, trustworthy and likeable.
Have a few safe conversation topics in your armoury: good
ones are the weather, movies, restaurants, books (you
can either find common ground or ask for and offer
recommendations), and light news topics (steer clear
of Brexit though, and anything to do with the election).
Also avoid work talk, that’s not the point of the event.
If you’re stuck in a conversation with someone you
find offensive, dull or with whom you have nothing in
common it can be hard to keep a conversation going. A
polite ‘So nice to chat with you, catch you later...’ should be
an adequate sign-off as you make your leave. The point of a party
is to mingle so this won’t seem unfriendly.
Remember - even if you would rather undergo root canal surgery
than attend the office party it’s worth showing your face. Go along,
have a drink and a mince pie then make a polite-but-early exit if you
really can’t cope. People won’t generally mind or even remember that
you left early but they might question why you didn’t show up at all.

FRIENDS OF HADLOW STATION
The daffodils have now been planted on the car park embankment, and by the new
fence, so these should give a colourful display next springtime, writes Hilary Booth
Winter tidy-up gardening has been completed on a cold wet miserable day. Many, many
thanks to those very hardy souls. It really is appreciated.
The signal by the crossing gates is now completely refurbished and now back in situ.
The old storage heater has been removed from the signal box (with Council approval)
The bricks and metal frame will be taken to the recycling centre ready for the arrival of
the Model Railway Station, which will be installed in the New Year. You will be amazed at
the detail of the 1950 station when you see it.
A new “Do not trespass” sign has been prepared and will be in situ by the time this goes
to print. These signs are well worth reading as they date back a long way!
Donated train memorabilia has been put into the ticket office.
The Christmas Grotto is on Sunday 8th December from 12noon to 4pm. All children’s
tickets have been sold, but there are a few adult tickets left if any adults fancy walking
down. It will be a lovely Christmas event for everyone, with entertainment and fun.
The pop-up cafe in October saw a fabulous warm sunny day, and was really enjoyed by
everyone. A huge turnout, and a nice change to sit outside to chat in the sunshine. The
next pop-up-cafe is on Sunday 26th January 2020 from 10.30am to1.30pm

The Holly and the Ivy
The holly and the ivy,
when they are both full grown,
GARDEN VIEW
of all the trees that are in the wood
the holly bears the crown.
There’s no doubt that holly and ivy are synonymous with
Christmas.
This dates back to pre-Christian era when pagans used evergreen
decorations in their mid-winter celebrations. It’s not hard to see why they
were attracted to these beautiful plants which offer a promise of better times
to come during the most barren time of the year.
Early Christians adopted them too and imbued holly particularly with
Christian symbolism. In the carol, ivy isn’t actually mentioned again until
the last verse which is a repeat of the first. It has a cameo role because of
earlier songs, such as ‘The Contest of The Ivy and The Holly,’ in which the
attributes of holly (male) and ivy (female) are compared. Our ancestors
lived close to the earth and the seasons and were open to symbolism. As
modern gardeners we might be sceptical of the symbolism, but we can
embrace the glory of these seasonal plants.
Ivy (Hedera) comes in many sizes, from the tiny-leaved ‘Spetchley’ to
the hand-sized leaves of ‘Maple Leaf’. It also comes in a beautiful variety
of colours from the rich green, crimped leaves of ‘Parsley crested’ which
makes great ground cover, to the gorgeous red-stemmed yellow leaves of the
climber ‘Sunrise’.
For winter baskets I’d recommend the lime-green ‘Ursula’ and her grey-leaved
friend ‘Frederick’.
Ivy is a doddle to grow. There are only a few things to remember. Cut it back in
spring to encourage new growth and take cuttings between October and March
when the growth is woody. Yellow varieties need sunshine and don’t let any of it
grow into your eaves. Other than that, it is your undemanding gardening friend.
Holly (Ilex) is pretty easy-going too. It will grow almost anywhere except really
water-logged soil. It’s tolerant of pollution, salt and wind and grows really
slowly, so it’s great for small gardens in the city and by the sea.
Protect it from rabbits if they frequent your garden as they love to eat the bark.
Trim it in August if you have to and remove plain green shoots on variegated
varieties. Take cuttings in the late summer or autumn. It does resent root
disturbance once it’s established so make sure you plant it in the right place first
time.
Hollies are male or female but not necessarily named to help you distinguish.
‘Silver Queen’ is actually male and ‘Martin’ is female! You’ll need both for berries
so talk to an expert at the nursery or garden centre to be sure…or google the
answer on your phone! If you only have room for one holly bush, grow a self-
fertile variety such as ‘J C Van Tol’.

Merry Christmas and Happy Gardening!
