Martin Gerlach jun. - Translated Architectures. Photographing for Adolf Loos

Fotohof 2018 ISBN 9783902993625 Acqn 29147
Pb 21x22cm 112pp 74ills £13.95

"So photography says nothing, you see." Loos could not adhere to such enormous skepticism
concerning the photographic representability of his architecture, however, when a monograph of
his buildings was to be published in 1931. The Viennese photographer Martin Gerlach jun. was
commissioned with taking pictures of the houses. Striving to translate the complex architecture
resulting from Loos's Raumplan (space planning) concept, Gerlach relied on different strategies
partly influenced by photographic avant-garde movements. The Villa Moller in Vienna, built in
1928, provides an example for elucidating the inevitable tension between (objective)
documentation and (subjective) interpretation. The surviving reproduction material, with its
instructions for emphasis and retouches, testifies to how deeply the protagonists-Gerlach, Loos,
and his associate Heinrich Kulka as editor of the publication-were involved in the process of
visualizing the buildings and interiors.

Crosser - Josef Perndl

Fotohof 2019 ISBN 9783902993885 Acqn 30103
Pb 20x27cm 104pp col ills £21.50

Josef Perndl has transposed his fascination for the more 'agricultural' variants of motor sports into
two photo books due to be published simultaneously. Crosser opens up the incredible world of
cross-country motorcycle races: Austrian landscapes; the racing paddocks, the spectators. male
and female bikers, helmeted, booted and suited, ploughing their way through the mud at absurd
speeds on motocross bikes, but also flying through the air; "We celebrate a return from civilisation
to dirt and grime. Race after race, bikers of both sexes relocate their raison d'etre to remote
locations, to slither and slide together into a parallel universe. Accompanied by family and fans,
they battle it out for every yard, and every second. Fuel, dust and adrenaline blend into a highly
addictive mix of thrills and spills". (J. P.)

Erasmus Schroter – Contest

Fotohof 2019 ISBN 9783902993779 Acqn 30104
Hb 25x30cm 104pp col ills £34.75

Erasmus Schroter began working on his Contest series in 2010, alongside his involvement in the
Wave Gothic world festival in Leipzig. The models posing for these photographs sidestep day-to-
day life, thwarting traditional role models by consistently transgressing sexual, religious and moral
boundaries and taboos. Many of the young men have chosen to provoke, to dazzle with bizarre
roles to which they have lastingly dedicated themselves, partly through changes to their physical
appearance.

The extensive series consists of large-format likenesses captured in colour and always taken in
neutral, uneventful surroundings. Through his analogue colour photographs he engages in the
current gender debate, addressing it from a spectrum of unusual and original perspectives.
Erasmus Schroter does not depict the stronger sex, but protagonists who appear rather fragile, as
if they have lost their equilibrium.

Joyce Rohrmoser - Rent A Foreigner

Fotohof 2019 ISBN 9783902993861 Acqn 30105
Hb 21x28cm 116pp col ills £30.50

For a number of years, China has stood not just for the mass production and export of cheap
industrial projects, but also the import of European luxury goods. The target group is the country's
ever-expanding middle-classes. The concept of 'rent-a-laowai' ('laowai' is Chinese for 'foreigner')
refers to the policy by which Chinese companies commission foreigners to attend their events.
Joyce Rohrmoser herself was employed as a 'laowai' by the Chinese company that bought up her
own family's fur company in Italy; in 2015 and 2016, she took part, in China, in various openings
of new outlet centres for luxury goods 'made in Italy'. Inspired by designer Donatella Versace, she
put on high heels and glamorous garments to perform her 'rent-a-foreigner' role. In that role as
the daughter of her father's former fur company she attended store openings and press
conferences for local television and press agencies, explaining to business directors and sales
staff how luxury and status symbols in Italy are defined and identified.

Mago Uber Verritt - Erwin Polanc

Fotohof 2019 ISBN 9783902993786 Acqn 30106
Hb 24x31cm 172pp col ills £51.75

In his artist's book entitled Mago Uber Verritt, Erwin Polanc takes a special look at reality. The
selection of photo- graphs combines images that address the act of seeing and its perception. His
photographs explore the anarchy of things (and the world of objects) and refuse any form of
narration. Instead, they align in the book into a radical sequence structured around sounding out
and sensing places, traces and relationships. They document an intent to fashion and to form
through photography while affording the images an autonomous space within the book. The
opportunities offered by the book medium, which have been elaborated in a congenial
collaboration with renowned book designer Oliver Kimpel, are an un- deniable part of this artistic
exploration. The 162 photographs within the body of the book are enfolded by a typographical
bracket. The name of the book remains hidden, to be found in its entirety only on the spine of the
book and the colophon. However, its word elements and fragments appear one after the other in
the book, now and then engaging with the photographs in minimalistic, wilful forms.
