Abstract
Wireless communication is a rapidly growing segment of the communication industry with
the potential to provide high speed, high quality information exchange between portable
device located anywhere in the world.

The present project will focus on the design and simulation of cost free wireless
communication for small compound. The scope of the project includes an initial literature
survey to have a brief overview of current wireless system and standards. We then
characterize the wireless channel, including path loss for different environments, random log-
normal shadowing due to signal attenuation, and the flat and frequency- selective properties
of multipath fading. Next we examine the fundamental capacity limits of wireless channels
and the characteristics of the capacity-achieving transmission strategies.

Chapter One
1. Introduction
1.1. Background
Telecommunication is an important tool for business. It enables companies to communicate
effectively with customers and deliver high standards of customer service.
Telecommunication is also a key element in team work, allowing employees to collaborate
easily from wherever they are located. Nowadays wireless communication is highly used
throughout our country. The wireless technology makes our life easier and we have come to
depend on it in our personal life. In our country the only provider of wireless communication
is Ethiopian Telecommunication because of this our demand of communication is not highly
satisfied. In our university compound students spend a lot amount of money just for mobile
card, therefore this project proposes that a cost free wireless communication for the
compound so that students can communicate with each other only in the university
compound. There are also other areas where this project can be applied. A simple cell phone
tower is built with in the specified range (university compound).

1.2. Statement of the problem

Previously, in our country there are no telecom service provider other than Ethio Telecom so
there is no flexibility and also the service that is provided by Ethio Telecom is inefficient for
all the people. Due to the inefficiency of the network service and the strength of the signal
(the signals that is blocked by buildings, towers or mountains) there is no satisfying
communication.

Students in university compound spend a lots of money in order to communicate with each
other for academic purpose. When there is a natural and man-made disaster the
communication service of Ethio Telecom might be out of service because of this there must
be a backup communication system. In military missions there are times when soldiers are
assigned for mission in areas out of service range due to this they must set up their own
cellular network to communicate with each-other other than using walkie-talkie, because
when we communicate with walkie-talkies there are a lot of noise, and they use half-duplex

1
system. There are other areas where this application can be used such as, underground
mining, submarine, hospitals and urgent compounds.

1.3. Significance of the project

The project minimize the cost to purchase a bandwidth (channel), for building of towers, and
for vendors which are used for telecom service. reduce the expense that students spend for
communication in the compound. In military case it facilitate better communication other
than walkie-talkie. We can set up the communication after the occurrence of natural disaster
when the Ethio Telecom service is down. This project also encourage privatization of
Telecom network that is owned by the government.

1.4. Objective of the project

General Objective: The main objective of this project is to build our own cellular network
without SIM card.

Specific Objective: To provide communication service for areas that are out of Ethio
Telecom service. To provide cost free wireless communication for different organization with
in a specific compound.

1.5. Scope of the project

The system is a wireless communication by using CDMA network, without using SIM card it
uses ESN(electronics serial number) of the phone.

The tower we use for transmission purpose is simple and portable. This will help to
encourage privatization that is owned by the government.

3. Methodology
Every user in this network is registered by their own ESN (electronics serial number) without
SIM card. Each cell phone that is manufactured has a unique ESN and cannot be changed or
duplicated. Once you have a cell phone's ESN number, you can verify that it is authentic and
able to be transferred to your cell phone account. Electronic Serial Number is a unique 32-
bits identification number embedded by manufacturers in wireless phones. In addition to
being programmed into the phone's microchip, the ESN typically is found on a label under
the cellular phone's battery.

If the user want to make a call they ping (uplink) to the near BTS (Base Transceiver Station)
tower then the BTS will identify the user phone. Then if it is identified the BTS will send a
signal to MS (Mobile Switch) for controlling mechanism. After this the software in the MS
identify the other user that is supposed to be the receiver tower. Then the receiver’s tower
sends this signal to the receiver nodes (by down link). Finally, the two users can
communicate by using this local network.

3.1. System Component

Main components that we use for this project are:

 ESN number of every users cell phone (node).

 Transmitter and Receiver BTS (Base Transceiver Station). BTS subcomponents are:

A. Transceiver (TRX)

4
B. Power Amplifier (PA)

C. Combiner

D. Multiplexer

E. Antenna

F. control Function

 MS (Mobile Switch)

3.2. System Component Description for the project

- Transceiver: provides transmission and reception of signals. It also does sending and
reception of signals to and from higher network entities (like the base station controller in
mobile).

- Power Amplifier: Amplifies the signal from TRx for transmission through antenna, may be
integrated with TRx.

- Combiner: combines feeds from several TRx so that they could be sent out through a single
antenna. Allows for a reduction in the number of antenna used.

- Multiplexer: For separating sending and receiving signals to/from antenna. Does sending
and receiving signals through the same antenna ports (cables to antenna).

- Antenna: This is the structure that the BTS lies underneath; it can be installed as it is or
disguised in some way

- MS (Mobile Switch): A mobile switching (MS) is the centerpiece of a network switching

subsystem (NSS). The MS is mostly associated with communications switching functions,
such as call set-up, release, and routing.
