The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest Greece. The Games were
part of a religious festival. The firts recorded date of these games was 776 B.C The Greeks gathered
in the serene Valley of Olympia to offer sacrifices to their many gods. In time, the event came to
include games and contests, which eventually came to be known as The Olympic Games
The Games were held in honor Zeus, king of the gods, and were staged every four years at Olympia,
a valley near a city called Elis. People from all over the Greek world came to watch and take part in
them. The ancient Olympic Games enden in 393 A.D when the Roman Emperor outlawed the games
and the festivities.
Mexico in the Olympic Games (from 1924 to 1948)
The firts time that Mexico participated in the olympic games was in 1924, in Paris. The second time
was in Amsterdam, in 1928. IT wasn´t until the olympic gams of to Los Angeles, in 1932, that Mexico
competed successfully. Mexico won its two first medals (both silver medals) thanks to Francisco
Cabañas (flyweight boxer) and Gustavo Huet Bobadilla (shooter)
After that, Mexico won bronze medals in basketball, polo and boxing at the Olympic Games of
London, in 1948, Mexico won its first gold medals in equestrian individual jumping, and equestrian
team jumping. At these games, Mexico also obtained a silver medal in equestrian individual jumping
and diving.
Los Juegos se celebraron en honor a Zeus, rey de los dioses, y se organizaron cada cuatro años en
Olimpia, un valle cerca de una ciudad llamada Elis. Gente de todo el mundo griego vino a verlos y
participar en ellos. Los antiguos Juegos Olímpicos enden en 393 dC cuando el emperador romano
prohibió los juegos y las festividades.
