Title: SURVIVAL MANUAL FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS

GUIDE FOR THE FILIPINO CULTURE:

As a foreign student, it is rather effective to indulge yourself to the culture of the Philippines. This brochure
will serve as your ultimate guide in your adventure through the Philippine Culture.

#1 – BASIC GREETINGS

Begin with basic greetings and how you can introduce yourself. Here are the few Filipino greetings you
can memorize:

ENGLISH FILIPINO
Good Morning Magandang Umaga
Good Afternoon Magandang Hapon
Good Evening Magandang Gabi
Good day Magandang Araw
I am / My name is… Ako si...
Nice to meet you! Ikinagagalak kong makilala ka!
How are you? Kumusta?
Pro Tip: A firm handshake can also be done while meeting new people. Waving your hand/s while saying
hello, hi, or goodbye is also understood.

#2 – KNOW THE FILIPINO MANNERS

Similar to other Asian countries, Filipinos show their respect by saying certain terms such as, “po” and
“opo”. This is usually addressed towards the elderly. Moreover, when you’re about to answer a “yes or
no” question, you can always say, “opo” which means Yes and “hindi po” which means No.

Example: Magandang Umaga “po”!

SURVIVAL TIPS IN ADJUSTING TO THE LASALLIAN CULTURE

De La Salle University was started by St. John Baptist De La Salle. It is a catholic institution which has
branches around the world and is known for its excellent education. Brace yourself as you encounter your
2nd home at DLSU-Dasmarinas!

SURVIVAL TIP #1 - LEARN THE LASALLIAN PRACTICES

 CLAYGO - “Clean as You Go”


It is important to be responsible of your own trash inside the university. Segregation is also a
must as trashcans with labels are seen around the university.
 Prayer – It is done before the start and end of every class.

“I will continue oh my God, to do all my actions for you.”

After prayer --- Leader: St. John Baptist De La Salle. Response: Pray for us.

Leader: Live Jesus in our hearts. Response: Forever.


 Lasallian Hymn – Raising your right arm with your fist doing the hand sign for A is done
while singing the 2nd verse of the Lasallian Hymn. It is sung before every event ends or to
show the Animo or fighting spirit of the institution.

SURVIVAL TIP #2 – IKOT LA SALLE IS YOUR FRIEND

Jeepneys are your way around the Philippines and in DLSU-D, you can easily get tired walking in a huge
campus. Not to worry, Ikot La Salle is a jeepney that brings you around the campus with a minimum fare.

Pro Tip: DLSU-D is beautiful in the morning and late afternoon. If you love the breeze and the morning
sun, try walking and meditate as you do so.

SURVIVAL TIP #3 – EXPLORE THE CAMPUS FOOD

Filipino food is served around the campus! Go ahead and try the Filipino Delicacies. (insert fil food pics
hihi)

Being a good Lasallian means upholding the good morals and values oof the university and being a
model to others. With the core values, Faith, Zeal for service, and Communion, let us dive into the things
you need in your stay in the institution.

ESSENTIALS YOU NEED AT DLSU-D

 Umbrella – The Philippines is a tropical country so it important to be ready when the


sun is shining bright or when the rain is pouring
 School Supplies – You have to be academically prepared.
 Hygiene or Sanitation Kit – In case you have classes the whole day, stay fresh as you
press on.
 Money – Around 150-300 pesos a day will provide you money for transportation and
food.
 Smile – Wear your best smile as you welcome a new day in your new school. Filipinos
are known to be cheerful and friendly so don’t be afraid as you welcome new people
into your life.

Lastly, breathe in the nature and beauty of DLSU-D. The Philippines and the school might have a
different culture from what you’re used to, but remind yourself to take it slow while adjusting to your
new environment.
