INSTRUCTIONS:
For all problems: 1) Round off to four decimal places for all calculations to be made.
2) Show complete solution for each problem.
3) Enclose final answer in a box.
PROBLEM 1
A catchment has six rain gauge stations. In a year, the annual rainfall recorded by the gauges are as
follows:
Station A B C D E F
Rainfall (cm) 82.6 102.9 180.3 110.3 98.8 136.7
For a 10% error in the estimation of the mean rainfall, calculate the optimum number of stations in the
catchment.
PROBLEM 2
Test the consistency of the 22 years of data of the annual precipitation measured at station A. Rainfall data for
station A as well as the average annual rainfall measured at a group of eight neighbouring stations located in a
meteorologically homogeneous region are given as follows:
PROBLEM 3
For a drainage basin of 600 km2, isohyetals drawn for a storm gave the following data:
PROBLEM 4
The average annual rainfall at gauges 1, 2, and 3 are 500, 750 and 1000 mm, respectively. Calculate the annual
average rainfall quantity inside the given catchment (plan shown below) using the Thiessen Method. Each square is
1 km X 1 km.
