One year of national service has been endorsed and used to great effect in many countries,

such as Israel and Norway, where citizens are required to serve in the military or other
governmental sects (CIA). These countries enjoy a strong military defense due to the mandatory
service requirement, and the people of these countries generally feel happier. Besides
increasing the general feeling of happiness in people, service saves the government money.
According to Senate Hearing 113-82, “the savings using conservation corps instead of
contractor crews were even more significant with average savings of 83% and over
$130,000 per project.” The usage of public workers, as found through national service
requirements, would cut down significantly on the national debt.

The usage of national service does not violate the 13th amendment, which states “Neither
slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have
been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their
jurisdiction.” When engaging in national service, one would be paid according to plans by Pete
Butiggeg and his predecessors.

One year of mandatory national service would close the opportunity gap. According to NCES
.ed, current college enrolment rates lie at just 40%! On top of that, less than 40% of Blacks and
Hispanics were enrolled in college from 2000-2017, compared to 41% white and 65% Asian
enrolment. The high costs for college, up from the gen. X costs are a deterring factor that
causes many poor, working-class families to not consider education. This lack of college is
extremely harmful to working-class families, according to Cornerstone EDU. College education
fords a higher employment rate and a higher average income than those with just a high school
diploma. On average, those in college earn one million$ more than those who do not go to
college.

If time
● The most pressing issue that our nation is facing is the lack of aid. Less than 28% of the

U.S. population volunteers. Mainly volunteer work is done through religious affiliation,

but as those are dwindling as well, we are losing our national service desire.

● On top of our lack of participation, we as a nation are becoming more time consumed.

● Most advertisements now only depict ways to become things faster, because most

people do not like or have the time for extra work.

● According to Monster Career Advice, More than 40% of the population would never work

if they did not have to and approximately half the population claims not to have time to

volunteer. With all these factors, why are we even having this debate? No

wonder the government should take a little control, and make people help their country

for a year.

● 46.7 million people in the U.S live below the poverty line, approximately 40 billion metric

tons of greenhouse gasses have been produced by humans,600 plant species and 322

animal species have been lost to humans, the U.S education is not even in the top 20s

for the best education, the list goes on.

● And apparently, there is not enough time for 72% of the population’s help. Let’s just have

a year to help our own country.

● By working closely together with different people toward a common goal, helps to

alleviate social differences.

● Also, it can eliminate the national debt, by putting more money into the government. It

can pay for education and help lower taxes.

● According to a recent study after one is engaged in public service they are more likely to

continue doing work for the community at their own will. Also, by doing good acts, one

feels fulfillment, which produces endorphins, creating simulated happiness.

● About 27.6 million people in the U.S suffer from depression and 42.6 million people

suffer from chronic loneliness.

● Public service also improves gratitude which improves mental and physical health,

cutting down on the obesity epidemic.
