The Good Guys is a chain of consumer electronics retail stores in Australia and formerly New
Zealand. Its national headquarters is in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon Fields. The company was
founded by Ian Muir and following his death in 2009 ownership of the chain remained with the Muir
family. In 2016, The Good Guys was purchased by JB Hi-Fi, despite competition concerns.
When the first The Good Guys store (known at the time as Ian Muir’s Radio and Electrical Centre)
opened in Melbourne’s northern suburbs in 1952 by the Muir family, the company’s philosophy was to
delight customers and ‘do good’. Careful small acquisitions over the years provided the business with
a strong foundation but it was re-naming to The Good Guys in 1998, supported by the unique selling
proposition Pay Less Pay Cash and the now iconic TV commercial, which prepared the company for
national expansion. This customer-centric approach is also reflected in the company’s ongoing
commitment to support and strengthen the communities in which it operates, and its Doing Good
program which supports 14 charities across Australia through Workplace Giving, awareness
campaigns and fundraising efforts.

JB Hi-Fi acquired The Good Guys for $870 million in 2016. The JB Hi-Fi Group, operating under its
listed holding company, JB Hi-Fi Limited, now brings together two of Australia’s best known and most
trusted retail brands, JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys. The Group sells an extensive range of consumer
electronics, whitegoods, appliances and home entertainment at great prices combined with genuine
personal service from our specialist staff. In addition to operating from over 300 stores in Australia
and New Zealand and its websites, the Group also services the commercial, insurance and education
sectors and offers information technology and consulting services, through its JB Hi-Fi Solutions
business.

Good Guys CEO, Michael Ford, said Chirnside Park is a dynamic, growing community which, The
Good Guys has been looking to expand into for quite some time. “At The Good Guys, we have a real
focus on creating the most knowledgeable, friendly and approachable teams, and we believe our
team at Chirnside Park will do that and more,” continued Mr Ford. The Chirnside Park location is one
of many stores that The Good Guys is looking to open in the next few years to better service its new
and existing customer base. “Finding ways to generate growth is always a challenge for retailers. We
are constantly looking for opportunities to innovate and invest in our store network, our online
channels and our customer experience, and store expansion presents a real growth opportunity for
our business,” said Mr Ford.

The Good Guys received the initial Choice award for best retailer in 2010 and the annual Roy Morgan
Customer Satisfaction Award for 2011 in the furniture/electronics retail category. The latter award,
presented by market research firm Roy Morgan Research is based on feedback from customers and
heads of business from all over Australia.

Social Responsibility and Charity (Sourced)

Since its humble beginnings in 1953, The Good Guys has been passionate about delighting
customers and Doing Good. Our Doing Good activities and partnerships aim to address important
social issues while supporting the development of the local communities in which we operate. And,
because we are Good Guys, we’re also always trying to find ways of assisting those Aussies who just
need a hand. One of those ways now includes an Employee Workplace Giving Program that allows
our team members to donate to 12 charity partners. The Good Guys Doing Good Workplace Giving
program started in July 2017 and every dollar donated by our team members is matched by The
Good Guys, doubling the positive impact on the charities we support and the community as a whole.
The Good Guys is a proud member of “The Australian Charities Fund” and are supporting their goal of
#1Mdonors by 2020. More on charities can be read at https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/doing-good
In 2010, The Good Guys established The Good Foundation and in partnership with celebrity chef
Jamie Oliver and the Queensland state government funded the establishment of the first Australian
Ministry of Food centre in Ipswich, west of Brisbane. The Foundation aims to encourage and support
programs and initiatives that have the potential to improve the health and social welfare of
communities across Australia.

Current Sustainability Practices (relevant to simulated context)

The Good Guys has a strong commitment to sustainability, especially product stewardship, offering
customers a free third-party collection service for old whitegoods. In 2016, The Good Guys partnered
with the NSW Government ( and hoping to work with other states as well) to launch an appliance
replacement initiative that helps nearly 20,000 low-income households in NSW cut the cost of their
energy bills, by offering those discounts on energy efficient refrigerators and televisions. The Home
Energy Action Appliance Program provides financial support through a 40 per cent subsidy for fridges

and a 50 per cent subsidy for TVs. According to the NSW government, this could help low-income
earners save approximately $2.8 million a year. Last year, The Good Guys was picked as the
program’s delivery partner and will be responsible for managing all public enquiries, assessing
customer suitability/eligibility, assisting customers with the application process, referring discretionary
customers to engagement partners for assessment and managing the sale, delivery and installation of
new products as well as the removal of old products. “When we first heard about the NSW
Government’s plans for a Home Energy Action Appliance Program, to assist low income households
through an appliance replacement incentive, we knew it was something that The Good Guys needed
to get involved with,” said Michael Ford, The Good Guys CEO. “We take corporate social
responsibility and sustainability very seriously and this program fittingly covers both areas,” Ford said.

CONTEXT & SCENARIO

The Good Guys electrical retail stores in your state (choose one from NSW, QLD or WA) has been
operating since 2002. The stores are bulky goods warehouse style store, selling whitegoods,
electronics and home appliances. There are 20 stores in your state that you have selected for this
sustainability initiative. Majority of the stores are about 2400 square metres and requires and overall
internal reconfiguration of its energy usage to reduce its own energy consumption and its carbon
footprint. Your state is renowned for high, dry temperatures in summer and very cold days in winter.

You have recently joined the simulated organisation (or the organisation of your choice that will take
the new sustainability initiatives as part of corporate vision) as the “Environmental Change Manager”,
who will prepare the business case for the need for this new initiatives within the organisation. Once
the sustainability policy and relevant procedures are developed, you will then communicate,
implement, and review the sustainability policy project. You will be progressively completing tasks one
after another within the simulated environment (or your preferred organisation going through change)
to complete this assessment task.

What change and what is required?

Currently, the simulated workplace “The Good Guys (or the organisation of your choice) is planning to
take on sustainable initiatives as part of the 2030 vision of the organisation. The objective is to reduce
carbon footprints created by the organisation and its employees. As more retailers are taking e-
policies and environmentally sound practices, your workplace felt the need to be on the forefront of
sustainable policies and practices.

Your operational director has mentioned you that some funds have been created for this project and
your primary job is to develop, communicate, implement and review the sustainability policy of the
organisation on a step-by-step basis. To do this, you are being asked to focus on all stores of a
specific state (choose one from NSW, QLD or WA) to implement this policy. You are to address the
internal energy consumption of the state retail stores along with its energy efficient appliances,
including office energy use, office supplies, purchasing and cleaning. Since this is the first initiative of
its kind for the organisation, it is important to conduct an initial research to find out the existing
scenario of energy consumption and resource use of the stores. The new approach of the company
emphasizes on it vision that economic prosperity should not come at the cost of the destruction of
natural and human resources.

You will particularly:

 scope and develop organisational policies and procedures that comply with legislative
requirements and support the organisation’s sustainability goals covering at a minimum such
as minimising resource use, resource efficiency, reducing toxic material and hazardous
chemical use, employing life cycle management approaches, and continuous improvement

Sustainability, Assessment No.1 v2 Last updated on 11/06/2019 by MM Page 7

T-1.8.1_v3

 plan and implement sustainability policy and procedures including agreed outcomes,
performance indicators, activities to be undertaken, assigned responsibilities, and record
keeping, review and improvement processes
 consult and communicate with relevant stakeholders to generate engagement with
sustainability policy development, implementation and continuous improvement
 review and improve sustainability policies

To develop and implement sustainability policy and practices, you will need to refer to your state
authorities. The state and territory government departments dealing with environmental legislation
and administering environment protection policies are as follows.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must complete Task 4 after completing your PART B (presentation
and communication)

TASK 4: REVIEW WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

SCENARIO: It has been six months since the implementation of your sustainability policy and it is
time for a bi-annual review of the new plan. During your review you have found the new plans have
incurred both expected and unexpected results within the state stores/branches. Below is the
breakdown of the outcomes of your sustainability policy in the last six months:
 The behaviour of the staff member towards paper use has decreased due to the increase in
recycling and use of digital media.
 However, that has led to the increase in electricity consumption by 5% on electronic
communication devices due to more use of mobile phones and emails.
 Overall electricity costs have been down by 9%. However, you have also invested heavily on
installing energy efficient equipments and products on every store. You expect to reach the
breakeven by the next 6 months.
 Store managers have procured operational goods (e.g. paper, stationary, devices, tools, etc)
from sustainable suppliers but this has increased operational costs by 8% in the last six
months.
 You have partnered with a third party (AirTasker) to provide some deliveries that includes
installation of goods at customer places. This has led to reduction of fuel usage, installation
hassle, and employment of additional casual employees. However, this has also reduced the
overall revenue by 2%.
 Your implemented staff rewards for green initiatives (for stores/breaches) have led to some
additional expenditure of $50,000 in the last six months. However, with these innovative
green ideas and initiates suggested by team members have led to operational efficiency by
10% which means that you employed 4 hours of less labour in every store each week (4
hours x 20 stores = 80 hours per week). This has eventually led to a massive labour cost
savings of 1920 hours during last six months.
Based on the outcomes, it is time for you to review and report the ongoing monitoring of the
implementation of the policy to the relevant stakeholders based on their previous feedback.

Task 4.1 Review, analyse and document the outcomes. Analyse the above six outcomes for
your simulated workplace project (or find results from your chosen organisation). In this task
you will summarise the results as reported to you by Operations Division. (6 marks)

Task 4.4 Monitor records and identify trends for remedial action. (4 marks)

SCENARIO: Based on the outcomes (positive and negative) from your sustainability policy
implementation, you will now monitor records for continuous improvement in sustainability. Although
the project incurred expenditure, new methods, change of culture and many more changes in the
workplace but you have received positive appraisal on the policy implementation from the
stakeholders. They have given you a green signal to proceed with the initiative because your
initiatives have attracted customers and media, and also enhanced brand image of your organisation
to the community. However, you have advised to monitor the sustainability policy implementation by
your director and suggested you to create a continuous improvement plan using the template below to
address those areas those require improvements.
