“Biag ni Lam-ang Literary Analysis”

This is an epic poem of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of the Philippines. It is

notable for being the first Philippine folk epic to be recorded in written form. It is also noted for

being a folk epic from a "Christianized" lowland people group (the Ilocano people). This epic of

Biag ni Lam-ang portrays the qualities and several characteristics of Filipinos. The traits,

attitudes, and values being shown in this epic reflect the history of how the Ilocano’s are before

which are the source of this epic. The story was filled with idealistic imaginations and fantasies.

It was able to show to the readers the unwavering journey of bravery, seeking for justice, love

for family and friends, and a spark of romance.

The son of Don Juan and Namungan Panganiban, Lam-ang, has been adored by his

uniqueness or extraordinary powers. When he was nine months old he goes to a journey to

seek his father. He already possessed maturity, physically and mentally. Lam-ang had

encountered different challenges in his journey, yet he continued to strive and conquer each on

of it. As to his romantic life, he will do anything to prove his love to Ines Cannuyan. That he is

worthy to marry her. Unfortunately, he was killed by berkakan, a furious shark, but he was

brought to life through the help of Marcus and his unbelievable animal friends.

The epic shows a picture of how the Filipinos fight for their love, doing everything just to

prove how dedicated we are. It also shows the importance of family, judt like how Lam-ang

seek for his father when he was young. It also shows the culture of Filipino people when it

comes to courtship. Biag ni Lam-ang depicts a very good portrayal of a true Ilocano and to all

Filipino.
