BASIC COMPETENSE
4.14 Processing and analyzing experimental data to predict the formation of precipitate

INDICATOR
4.14.1 Conduct an experiment of the effect of pH on the solubility of Ca(OH)2
4.14.2 Analyzing the results of observations of an experiment of salt solubility
4.14.3 Summing up the results of the salt solubility experiment
4.14.4 Present the results of the salt solubility experiment to friends in front of the class

THEORY
pH is inversely proportional to solubility, where, the lower the pH the higher a solubility,
while the higher the pH the lower the solubility. This can be explained, if the pH of the solution
is raised OH- ions will also rise, and the equilibrium shifts to the left, causing the solubility to
decrease.
And if the pH of the solution is lowered, the H+ ion will rise as well and the H+ ion will
react with OH- forming H2O, so the OH- ion decreases, and the equilibrium shifts to the right
causing the solubility to rise.
The price of Ksp of a base can be used to determine the pH of the solution. Instead the
price of pH is often used to calculate the amount of Ksp.
Example:
If 0.3 M MgCl2 solution is dropped with NaOH solution, at what pH does the Mg(OH)2
precipitate begin to form? (Ksp Mg(OH)2 = 3 ×10-11)
Answer:
Ksp Mg(OH)2 = [Mg2+][OH-]2
3 ×10-11 = (0,3)[OH-]2
[OH-]2 = 10-10
[OH-] = 10-5 M
pOH = 5
pH = 14-5 = 9
PROBLEM

pH affects the solubility of Ca(OH)2

Ca(OH)2 has very low solubility in water. When 1 gram of Ca(OH)2 is dissolved in a
base solution a precipitate will form. The situation will be different, if Ca(OH)2 is put into an
acidic solution, Ca(OH)2 deposits will be less than deposits in base solvents.
A. Experiment Purpose

B. Problem Formulation
Based on the problem above, make a problem statement!
What is the effect of pH on the solubility of Ca(OH)2 ?

C. Hypothesis
Formulate a hypothesis from the problem above!
The lower the pH the higher the solubility, the higher the pH the lower the solubility.

D. Variable

0.5 M NaOH 5 mL solution 1 gram Precipitates (++)
0.5 M HCl 5 mL solution 1 gram Precipitates (+++)
H. Analysis
1. Based on observations, how does pH affect solubility?
a. Which solution dissolves the most Ca(OH)2 ? (Planning skill)
Answer: Ca(OH)2 is the most soluble in HCl solution, whereas in NaOH solution, the
deposits increase.
b. Determine the effect of pH on the solubility of Ca(OH)2 ? (Monitoring skill)
Answer: The solubility of Ca(OH)2 increases at acidic pH, and decreases at basic pH.
c. Determine the conclusions you can draw from the process of work that you do!
(Evaluation skill)
Answer: The lower the pH the higher the solubility of Ca(OH)2.
2. What is the effect of increasing pH on marine Ca(OH)2 ?
a. Write down the ionization of Ca(OH)2 ! (Planning skill)
Answer: Ca(OH)2 (s) → Ca2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq)
b. Determine the effect of the pH increase on the solubility of Ca(OH)2! (Monitoring skill)
Answer: The addition of pH can reduce the solubility of Ca(OH)2.
c. Determine the conclusions you can draw from the process of work that you do!
(Evaluation skill)
Answer: The addition of pH causes the solubility of Ca(OH)2 to decrease to form
sediment.
3. If Ca(OH)2 has Ksp Ca(OH)2 = 5.02 × 10-4. Calculate the solubility in water and the
equilibrium pH!
a. Write down the ionization of Ca(OH)2 ! (Planning skill)
Answer: Ca(OH)2 (s) → Ca2+ (aq) + 2OH- (aq)
b. Calculate solubility and pH equilibrium using Ksp! (Monitoring skill)
Answer: Ca(OH)2 (s) ⇄ Ca2+ (aq) + 2OH-
s s
Ksp Ca(OH)2 = [Ca2+] [OH-]
5.02 x 10-6 = s (2s)2
5.02 x 10-6 = 4s2
1.08 x 10-3 = s
[OH-] = 2s
= 2 x (1.08 x 10-3) = 2.16 x 10-3
pOH = -log[OH-]
= -log 2.16 x 10-3
= 3-log 2.16
pH = 14-pOH
= 14-(3-log 2.16) = 11.33
d. Determine the conclusions you can draw from the process of work that you do!
(Evaluation skill)
Answer: pH 11.3 is the pH of the equilibrium reaction of the Ca(OH)2 solubility in H2O.
if the pH is 11.33, the concentration of OH- ions decreases so that solubility increases. If
the pH> 11.33 OH- concentration will increase so that the solubility decreases. That is,
the pH of the solution affects the solubility of the substance.
I. Conclusion
pH affects the solubility of Ca(OH)2, the lower the pH the higher the solubility, the higher the
pH the lower the solubility.
