Proposal
Title of production- Short film ( )
Concept- I am producing a short film with no dialogue for a target audience of people aged
25-40. The genre of my production is Horror. My short film is about a 22 year old woman
who is deaf, due to her disability she struggles to communicate with people which is one of
the reasons she lives in the countryside as well as the fact that she has a very strong
connection with her two dogs. She lives in her parents’ house as they sadly past away
however she does not have to work as they left a lot of money behind with them so she
spends most of her time with animals, reading, on the computer, cleaning, shopping and
watching television (With subtitles.) In the short film she will be doing everything she
normally does during her day however not everything will go as expected, for example some
mysterious events will take place as she is on a dog walk and once she is home she will be
unaware that there is a big masked man trying to break into her house, the man does
eventually get into the house and that is when the more violent gruesome scenes will begin.

Why are you producing this production?

Firstly I am producing this production so that I can enter it into a competition, I am doing a short film
specifically because there were three options which were a short film, music video or a stop motion
production. (I am also doing a music video.) The reason I am producing this short film in particular is
because I sent a survey out with three narrative ideas for a short film and from my responses it was
clear that this idea had the highest demand or majority of the votes. I want to produce a short film
as I think it is a good way for me to showcase skills that I have, I also like the idea of telling a story
and with this production I am producing a short film with no dialogue which I haven’t done before so
I liked the idea of a challenge and when thinking of ideas I could vision some creative ideas.

Deadline- Thursday 28th November 2019 at 4PM

My Target audience is aimed at males and females aged between 25 and 40 (Millennials.) This is
because we were given the option of a target audience of 25-40 or 5-12 and I chose to aim my
Josh Simons
production at the age range 25-40 because I feel like I could produce a better production for that
target audience that would appeal to them and also be relatable.

What they want to see- As I am producing my production for a specific audience I have done lots of
research into my target audience and what they like to see in production, what genres they like,
where they watch productions etc. From my research I found that specifically in a horror my target
audience like to see characters of a similar age, relatable locations such as houses, places of work
and normal day to day locations. I also found that they will watch productions with violence and
gruesome scenes however specifically more realistic scenes instead of zombies and massive guns for
example. My target audience like to watch productions with a strong narrative that they can follow
and one that is gripping with a clear structure. I found that the majority would rather watch a
production that has a steady pace and isn’t too fast with too much happening at once.

What you are creating based from that research- Based on my research I have taken into account
my actors, my locations, my narrative, the structure, the props and the overall look and pace of my
production. Firstly I have thought a lot about my main actor and it is going to be an 18 year old girl
however she does look older and I think that my audience will still be able to relate and the
characters will appeal to them, my main character also fits my genre very well in being the victim in
a horror film, I found from my research that in the horror genre the victim is normally a blonde
attractive female so my actor is fitting. The next thing that I thought about was my locations, I am
only using a couple of locations to keep the production straight forward and so I can focus mainly on
just two areas. The first location is going to be the house that the main character lives in it is in the
country side and very relatable for my target audience as it is a mature house with only things that
the character likes and has interests in and the majority can relate to living on their own or with pets
etc. The second location is going to be in the woods which is spooky giving it the horror vibe, this
location is also realistic and relatable as the majority of people have a woods near them and have
been through the woods before and they know what it’s like. I think that my narrative is very
straight forward but still interesting and will hopefully be gripping for the audience and the pace of
my production is going to be quite slow and easy to follow. There is going to be a clear equilibrium,
disruption and recognition however not so much a repair. My production is going to be realistic and
professional therefore so are my props, there are going to be lots of props around the house relating
to the character and her interests. This is important to show that it is realistic and that it is actually
her house, there are also going to be key props such as weapons that might have to be used later on
in the story and things like her hearing aids that will play a big part in the production. It will be clear
that certain props hold more power over the others and there is also going to be some mysterious
props that ask the audience questions.

Where the production will be aired (why – based on target audience) I am going to upload my
production on to YouTube because although it has the biggest audience in general it also has one of
the biggest audiences of my target audience, this will allow me to showcase my short film to a lot of
people that it is targeted at and get a lot of reviews from my target audience so it will allow me to
evaluate my work accurately. Another reason for using YouTube is because it is very straight forward
to use and upload productions, you can upload very quickly and it is also very easy for people to find
your productions and then also look at other videos you have uploaded. It will be a good way to see
how many people have watched my short film and who likes it and who doesn't and almost
everyone has access to YouTube.
