Herbs and spices add flavor to our food. Besides increasing the palatability of otherwise bland foods, they
work as digestive aids, the volatile oils in them having a therapeutic action on the digestive system and various
other organ systems in the body. Their antimicrobial properties have long earned them an important place in
food preservation methods such as drying and pickling. They are great air purifier too.

Planting medicinal herbs inside the school campus to improve knowledge of students on different types of
medicinal herbs and use them whenever needed for personal purpose. Various kinds of herbs will be planted
in order to widen varieties, so they can be used for various purposes. These various purposes will include
treating injuries, pain, mostly for medical purposes, treatment through natural remedies. These can also be
used as spices for cooking purposes whenever required by the teachers or students during a cooking
competition, for instance. They can also be used after sports lessons, sport competitions or rigorous exercises
to relax muscle in order for better day to day basis performances, and it will have positive impact on natural
environment as most of these herbs are excellent air purifier.

TYPES OF HERBS TO BE PLANTED-

GOALS-

This activity is being done to learn something new, to increase knowledge on herbs, to spread the importance
of herbs in human life, and how to grow them and care for them. This will also increase the skills of the
participant, by planting herbs we will have improved knowledge on environment and the subject biology will
also come into role, where the knowledge of biology will be be used to plant the herbs and help maintain
them and their growth. This will also teach the participant to be eco-friendly as we will continuously care for
the planted herbs and also raise awareness of the herbs and persuade the students around the school to make
use of them.

Learning Outcomes-

1. This project will help us develop new skills in organizing a project, where we will overcome different
kind of challenges in order to make the herb plantation successful.

2. This will also teach us how to initiate and plan a project and spread out a message to everyone
around the school, that how caring for the environment helps in self maintenance of proper health.

3. We will have to organize and specify roles to ourselves for the project. Collaborative skills will come
into the play for this project where we will learn to effectively work with each other’s and this will
improve our cooperative and working skills within ourselves, where we will have to communicate
effectively with each other to make things work properly.

4. This will also help us be part of a wider global engagement. Plantation is a worldwide concern where
people are each and every other moment persuaded to maintain green environment around them,
for good health, Air purification and protection of global environment.

5. As we will create a small plantation in the school area, it will create a place for the primary and
nursery students to visit the plantation as a small educational field trip within the school area. They
will be able to identify the herbs, they will learn the use and beneficial aspect of the herbs.

Location and Plan

In order to give some idea about our proposed location and plan we have drawn two diagrams. The proposed
area is located behind right hand side of goal post of the football field. As this area is having a small portion of
land suitable for our plantation. And we found the land unused.

SUMMARY OF DIAGRAMS

The first diagram is the complete image plan of the specific area where the herbs will be planted.
The diagram shows exact positioning of the area where we will be planting the herbs. It’s on the
right-hand side of the field behind the goal post. It will take a space of approximately of 4x10m. The
second diagram shows the close-up view of the plantation and how is it going to be planted. The soil
and the banner behind are also being shown in the image, giving a view of the area also.

Process:

1. We will need to create a fence around the area, more of a boundary in order to keep the area
protected and safe. This will be done with the help of the school’s carpenter.

2. We need to prepare the soil. We will dig the soil with a large garden fork to loosens soil that has
become compacted over the years. This allows water to drain and creates space for plant roots to
reach down into the soil.

Time needed – 6 hours, 2 hours per day

3. We will add compost to soil, about an inch or so on top and then mixing it into the soil, which helps
prevent drainage problems and fertilizes the soil.

Time needed- 2 hours

4. We buy the saplings of Ginger, Basil, Turmeric, Cardamom, and Mint.

5. The final step is to plant healthy, strong plants and water them when they become dry. Most Herbs
like to be watered as soon as the soil located a couple of inches below the surface is dry to the touch.

Note: Since temperatures and humidity cause drying times to vary every week, we must check the soil
often. We must not over-water. More water is not good as can lead to poor growing conditions for
the Herbs, which will result in reduced growth.

Time needed- 2 hours

6. We will stick our project’s banner on the wall behind the plantation. And a standing banner in order
to represent our work.

We will work in the field after school and during Saturdays.

Duration: Start - 1st April 2019

End - 30th April 2019. The garden will be handed over to school gardener.

 For this entire process we will need support from the school’s carpenter and
gardener.
