The test applicant shall submit specifications and other relevant information about the
mungbean sheller. They shall abide with the terms and conditions set forth by the official
testing agency.
The mungbean sheller shall be tested as installed for normal operation. The site should
have ample provisions for material handling, temporary storage, workspace and suitable
for normal working condition. Adequate ventilation and lighting shall be provided in the
area.
If during the test run, the machine stops due to breakdown or malfunction so as to affect
the machine’s performance, the test may be suspended. If the machine will not be able
to continue operation, the test shall be terminated.
5 Test Preparation
5.1 Preparation of the mungbean sheller for testing
The representative of the test applicant and the official testing agency shall check the
mungbean sheller so as to ensure that the machine has been assembled and installed in
accordance with the instruction of the manufacturer. The official testing agency will test
the mungbean sheller according to the specifications of the manufacturer.
4
PNS/BAFS PABES 269:2019
The suggested list of minimum field and laboratory test equipment and materials needed
to carry out the mungbean sheller test is shown on Annex A. These instruments shall be
calibrated regularly. Before and after each test, these instruments shall be physically
checked for operation and shall be cleaned, respectively. A checklist of instruments and
materials to be used before departure to and from the testing area shall be prepared.
Test materials to be used shall be matured mungbean from a single variety with 12-15%
MC wet basis. The amount of test material to be supplied shall be sufficient for at least
one hour of shelling operation. The excess amount shall be used for running-in prior to
the actual conduct of test trials. However, if the test materials are beyond the
recommended characteristics, the test engineer has the option not to pursue the test,
concurred by the representative of the test applicant.
Before the start of the test, the mungbean sheller should have undergone a running-in
period. The mungbean sheller shall be operated at the test site by the official
representative of the test applicant for sufficient duration with or without load. During the
running-in period, the various adjustments of the machine shall be made according to the
recommendation of the test applicant.
The specifications claimed by the test applicant and the physical details given in Annex
B shall be verified by the official testing agency. A stable and level surface shall be used
as reference plane for verification of dimensional machine specifications.
Representative test samples shall be collected by the official testing agency from the test
material for analysis. Sampling procedure is shown in Annex C.
7 Performance Test
5
PNS/BAFS PABES 269:2019
A minimum of three (3) test trials, with duration of at least fifteen (15) minutes per trial,
shall be adopted.
7.3 Sampling
Samples shall be collected at different outlets during each test trial. Sampling procedure
is shown in Annex C.
The duration of each test trial shall start with the feeding of the test materials into the inlet
(first drop) and ends at the last drop of the shelled mungbean at the discharge outlet.
However, all discharge from different outlets shall be included after the cut-off time.
7.4.2.1 The sound emitted by the machine, with and without load, shall be measured
using a sound level meter at the location of the operator/s. The noise level, expressed in
decibel [dB (A)], shall be measured 50 mm away from the ear level of the operator/s.
7.4.2.2 For each data to be taken, there shall be a minimum of five (5) observations.
Before taking data, it should be ensured that the feed rate, speed, and other functional
characteristics have stabilized. The time of recording shall be properly spaced during the
whole duration of the test trial.
To get the amount of fuel consumed, the tank shall be filled to a certain marked level
before the test. After the test, fill the tank with measured fuel to the same level before the
test. When filling up the tank, careful attention shall be paid to keep the tank at the same
position as the first measurement.
Use a power meter to measure the voltage, current, and the total energy requirement of
the mungbean sheller. There shall be three (3) sets of data with a minimum of five (5)
observations per set taken with and without load.
6
PNS/BAFS PABES 269:2019
The shaft speed (rpm) of the prime mover, cylinder, blower and other driven components,
with and without load shall be measured using a tachometer.
The air velocity generated by the blower, without load, shall be measured using an air
velocity meter in meters per second.
Record sheet for all data and information during the test is given in Annex D. Observations
to be taken during the performance test shall be recorded in this sheet.
8 Laboratory Analysis
Laboratory analysis shall be made to determine the moisture content of the bean and
shell, bean-pod ratio, mechanically damaged beans, losses and purity. The laboratory
procedure to be followed in the analysis and the schematic flow diagram of the conduct
of the laboratory analysis are given in Annex E while the data sheet is given in Annex F.

Annex C
(Normative)
The conditions of the input such as moisture content of bean and shell, bean-pod ratio,
damaged beans and purity to be used in each test shall be taken using three (3)
representative samples, which represent the different conditions of mungbean input in the
bulk. This is done by randomly taking samples at the top, middle and bottom portions of
the bulk. Half of the sample shall be used for laboratory analysis and the other half shall
be used for reference purposes or for an eventual second check in case of review.
Samples representing the materials for each test trial shall be placed in appropriate
containers for laboratory analysis.
During each test trial, three (3) sets of samples shall be randomly collected during the
duration of the test trial from the different outlets to be analyzed in the laboratory for the
determination of losses, purity, bean- pod ratio and mechanically damaged beans.
During each test trial, three (3) samples shall be randomly taken from the shelled
mungbean outlet. The minimum amount of sample to be taken shall be twice as what is
needed for the laboratory analysis.
During each test trial, three (3) samples shall be randomly taken from the blower outlet
for a duration of at least 10 seconds per collection by using catching net. These samples
shall be placed in appropriate containers and labeled as blower loss.
All samples to be taken to the laboratory shall be placed in appropriate containers and
properly labeled. If the samples are not to be immediately analyzed they should be air-
dried and if necessary, treat samples with chemicals such as insecticide in order to
prevent the samples from possible damage. If the sample is to be used for determining
moisture content, it must be kept in dry and airtight containers.

Laboratory Analysis
Take three (3) 500 g samples from the shelled mungbean outlet. Clean the samples to
remove the impurities and other foreign matters. The clean sample shall be weighed and
recorded.
At least five (5) representative samples taken randomly at 100 g each shall be taken for
moisture content determination preferably using the Air-Oven Method or any calibrated
moisture meter. Refer to PAES 203:2000
In measuring the bean-pod ratio, take three (3) representative samples of approximately
100 pods from the test materials. For each sample, manually shell the pod. Determine
the weight of the bean and the shell separately. Record and calculate the bean-pod ratio.
This shall be taken using at least ten (10) representative samples of shelled mungbean
and pod, and measure the length, diameter and weight.
Three 100-gram bean samples from manually shelled beans shall be taken for analysis.
These beans shall be inspected for any damages. The net percent damaged beans shall
be taken as the difference between the values obtained from the manual and machine
shelled bean samples.
Three 100-gram samples from machine shelled beans shall be taken for analysis.
Separate those beans that were broken or crushed and weigh.
Three (3) samples shall be taken at the shell outlet to collect shelled mungbean with
shells. Each sample shall be cleaned and weighed. The total weight of the clean shelled
mungbean and the total time of collection shall be recorded for the computation.
16
PNS/BAFS PABES 269:2019
In each test trial, unshelled beans from all outlets shall be separated and weighed. The
time of collection of the three (3) samples shall be taken and recorded for the computation
of the unshelled loss.
Shelled mungbean scattered around the machine shall be collected after each trial,
cleaned and weighed for the determination of scattering loss. Use catching nets or spread
canvass sheets around the shelling floor area to collect beans.
