The Importance of a Name

5

How Important Is Your Name?

Summary: The Bible is filled with accounts regarding how God used people in powerful ways.
Both the known and the not-so-much known. Jesus has touched millions of people in a very
humble way.
I would like you to think about your name. Is it a good name? If you could have named
yourself, would you have chosen the same name? There is a meaning behind every name, what
is the meaning behind yours? My name Rebecca means, a Hebrew origin meaning "servant of
God".
So together we are loving, caring powerful rulers. Names are important and have been
since time began.
We spoke briefly about this in our Bible Study. Think back to Biblical times. Jacob, the
father of the twelve tribes wrestled with God, and God changed his name to Israel. In Genesis,
chapter 32, God said to Jacob, “Your name shall longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have
struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.” And from that point on, Jacob (Israel)
was blessed. He said “I have seen God face to face and my life is preserved.” Israel is called
Israel today because of Jacob’s faithfulness. And from that point on, God used him in a
powerful way in spite of his limp. And God uses each of us in spite of our limps. ( or uneven
manner).
Think of other names. Joseph, Mary, Rahab, Paul, Peter, Esther, Ruth, John.

Joseph- Greek Ιωσηφ (Ioseph), which was from the Hebrew name ‫יֹוסֵ ף‬
(Yosef) meaning "he will add", from the root ‫( יָסַ ף‬yasaf). In the Old Testament Joseph is the
eleventh son of Jacob and the first with his wife Rachel.

Hebrew Miryām (sea of bitterness, sea of sorrow). There is much debate over
the meaning of the name, however. While "sea of bitterness or sorrow" seems to be
the most probable, some sources give the alternative definitions of "rebellion,"
"wished-for child," and "mistress or lady of the sea." The name, borne in the Bible by
the virgin mother of Jesus, has become one of the most enduringly popular names in
the Christian world.

Rahab s: means Large; extended (name of a woman).

Paul, From the Roman family name Paulus, which meant "small" or "humble" in
Latin. Paul was an important leader of the early Christian church. According to Acts in the New
Testament, he was a Jewish Roman citizen who converted to Christianity after the resurrected
Jesus appeared to him.

Peter, Derived from the Greek Πετρος (Petros) meaning "stone". This is a translation
used in most versions of the New Testament of the name Cephas, meaning "stone" in Aramaic,
which was given to the apostle Simon by Jesus (compare Matthew 16:18 and John 1:42).
6

. Esther, Esther (Hebrew: ‫ )אֶ ְס ֵתר‬is a feminine given name known from the Jewish
queen Esther, eponymous heroine of the Book of Esther. ... The name can be derived from the
Old Persian stāra (NPer. ‫ ستاره‬setāra, meaning "star") although some scholars
identify Esther with the name of the Babylonian goddess of love Ishtar.
Ruth, The name Ruth is a Hebrew Baby Names baby name. In Hebrew
Baby Names the meaning of the name Ruth is: Companion; friend; vision of beauty. In the
Bible, Ruth the Moabitess was the great grandmother of King David
John, The name John is a Hebrew Baby Names baby name. In Hebrew
Baby Names the meaning of the name John is: Jehovah has been gracious; has shown favor. In
the bible John the Baptist baptized Christ in the Jordan river. Variants have been created in
almost every language.

We are reading from the Gospel of John, chapter 1 verses 25-32. John opens his Gospel
with the words, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word
was God. He, Jesus Christ, was in the beginning with God and all things were made through Him
and without Him, nothing was made.” Sounds rather definite doesn’t it?

John goes on to talk about the forerunner of Christ, John the Baptist, the future
rejection of Christ, the acceptance of Christ and the incarnation of Christ – all in the first
chapter. We pick up at the time John the Baptist was being questioned by the Pharisees and
Levites about his own identity. John quoted a verse from Isaiah and then, speaking from the
Jordan River he said: “I baptize with water, but there stands. One among you whom you do not
know. It is He who is coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not
worthy to loose.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold the Lamb of God,
who takes away the sin of the world.” This is He of whom I spoke earlier. And John bore witness
saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from Heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. This
is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit, and I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his own disciples. And looking at Jesus as he
walked he said, “Behold the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard him speak and they
followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you
seek?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (translated Teacher) where are you staying? He said to them,
“Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying and remained with Him that day –
now it was about the tenth hour (according to the Roman method of the day beginning at
midnight, it would have been ten in the morning.)

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
He found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah (Jesus Christ),
and he brought him to Jesus. When Jesus looked at him He said, you are Simon, the son of
Jonah. You shall be called Cephas which is translated a stone. The term Cephas means a small
7

rock in Aramaic which is translated “Peter” in Greek, or Petros. Jesus’ assignment of the name
Cephas, or Peter to Simon occurred at the outset of His ministry. The statement not only is
predictive of what Peter would be called but also declarative of how Jesus would transform his
character and use him in relationship to the foundation of the church.

We read in the Gospel of Matthew that Jesus refers to Peter as the rock and “On this rock I will
build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” And when Jesus referred to
Peter as the rock in Matthew, the Greek was “Petra” which means a foundation builder. So a
man originally referred to as a small rock, became known as a man with boulder-like strength
and faith to carry out Christ’s commission for the church. How important is a name?

I would like you to think about your name, and how God can use you as He used Peter. When
Jesus first called Peter, He left everything He had and followed Him. God has called each of you
by name. Do we do the same? Do we trust without doubt? Do we have faith that could move
mountains?

Dissertation and thesis are seen as the same thing, however, there are a number of differences
between the two. Usually a thesis is submitted at the end of one's master's degree, and
dissertation is submitted at the end of a PhD.

A thesis or dissertation is a document submitted in support of candidature for an academic

degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings. In some
contexts, the word "thesis" or a cognate is used for part of a bachelor's or master's course,
while "dissertation" is normally applied to a doctorate, while in other contexts, the reverse is
true. The term graduate thesis is sometimes used to refer to both master's theses and doctoral
dissertations.
The word "dissertation" can at times be used to describe a treatise without relation to
obtaining an academic degree. The term "thesis" is also used to refer to the general claim of an
essay or similar work.
A graduate degree generally requires completing either a thesis or a dissertation, and there is a
difference between thesis and dissertation. In Shakespeare’s day, a candidate for a master’s
degree would write a thesis, an original paper in which he maintained a certain proposition. He
would read his thesis to his committee, after which he sat in silence while two faculty members
gave point by point refutations or tspeech act of answering an attack on your assertions , of
everything he said. The focus here was on the student’s ideas and his ability to arrange and
express them clearly. If a student wished to advance further in academia he could pursue a
dissertation. This was more of a literature review. He would read widely in a particular area
and write up his findings, discussing the various authorities and their opinions. The point was
to demonstrate that he was well versed in the literature of the field.
A doctoral thesis is a focused piece of original research which is performed in order to obtain a
PhD. A dissertation is part of a broader post-graduate research project. However, the thesis has
evolved since original research nowadays requires plenty of background research. So, a thesis
will contain extensive citations and references to earlier work, although the focus remains on
the original work that comes out of it.
A thesis is shorter than a dissertation it gradually came to mean a preliminary degree on the
way to a doctorate. A thesis is now performed to earn a Master’s degree. In scientific fields a
master’s candidate takes advanced coursework and gains hands on experience in a research
project but does not direct the project to the same extent that he would in a doctoral program.
In a master’s project the student’s ideas are welcomed and expected but the focus is on
obtaining technical expertise, not doing original research. Engineering students commonly
obtain Master’s degrees and seldom go on to get PhDs. In other fields such as Chemistry, the
opposite is true, with a Master’s degree no longer being required as a first step for a doctorate.
44

Almost everyone I know who received a Master’s degree in Chemistry got one because they
dropped out of graduate school and wrote their truncated research as a Master’s project.
Both a thesis and a dissertation require a lot of work and should be treated seriously.

Both papers are similar in their structure, as they contain an introduction, literary review, body,
conclusion, bibliography and appendix.

Basic Thesis and Dissertation Differences

The main difference between a thesis and a dissertation is when they are completed. The
thesis is a project that marks the end of a master’s program, while the dissertation occurs
during doctoral study. The two are actually quite different in their purpose, as well. A thesis is a
compilation of research that proves you are knowledgeable about the information learn
throughout your graduate program. A dissertation is your opportunity during a doctorate
program to contribute new knowledge, theories or practices to your field. The point is to come
up with an entirely new concept, develop it and defend its worth.

Structural Differences Between a Thesis and a Dissertation

A master’s thesis is kind of like the sorts of research papers you are familiar with from
undergrad. You research a topic, then analyze and comment upon the information you gleaned
and how it relates to the particular subject matter at hand. The point of the thesis is to show
your ability to think critically about a topic and to knowledgeably discuss the information in-
depth. Also, with a thesis, you usually take this opportunity to expand upon a subject that is
most relevant to a specialty area you wish to pursue professionally. In a dissertation, you utilize
others’ research merely as guidance in coming up with and proving your own unique
hypothesis, theory or concept. The bulk of the information in a dissertation is attributed to you.

Finally, there is a difference in length between these two major works. A master’s thesis should
be at least 100 pages in length, likely a bit beyond that. However, a doctoral dissertation
should be much longer, because they involve a great deal of background and research
information, along with every detail of your proposal and how you arrived at the information. A
dissertation is an extremely complex work. It will likely be two, possibly even three, times the
length of a thesis. You will receive guidance from a faculty member who will serve as your
dissertation adviser. This adviser will be there to point you in the right direction if you are stuck,
can assist in locating resources and ensure that your proposal is on the right track.
