SCHOOL ZONING DOESN’T MAKE INDONESIA’S EDUCATION QUALITY ANY


BETTER

Education quality has been one of the main problems in Indonesia. The
government initiated the school zoning in order to make the education quality more equal.
Omitting the “favorite school” stereotype so anyone get the same quality of education by
creating an educational ecosystem where students, parents, and the neighborhoods provide a
conducive environment for students to pursue knowledge in an optimum state of mind. But it
seems like the intention won’t make the Indonesia’s education will be any better because there
are several negative effects caused by the program. Here down below are the negative effects
that are caused by the school zoning in terms of students’ enthusiasm, performance, and
adaptation.
The most obvious aspect that school zoning affect is the students’ enthusiasm in
learning. School zoning makes the student go to the school that is near with the area where they
live. It means that the students can’t go to their favorite schools or at least the one that they
choose by themself. By knowing that they study in school that they don’t like, the students will
feel like they’re forced to study and it definitely will decrease their enthusiasm in school. It has
always been hard for everybody to do something when they are forced. Mike Hedrick from
New York Times stated that when someone is forced to do something, the result won’t be that
good because they feel like they’re doing something under pressure.
The second aspect that is affected by the school zoning is the students’
performance in learning. Unconsciously, school zoning can affect the students’ will power in
maintaining their grades. It is stated that good grades is not the requirement in entering the
school. The students that live nearer with the school can be accepted in the school easier instead
of the students that have higher scores in class. Entering a favorite school has been the students’
intrinsic motivation for a long time, but by knowing that good scores are not the main
requirement and the fact that zoning system won’t let the students to go their favorite school
will make the students think that their struggles are pointless.
The last aspect that affected by the school zoning is the students’ learning process
in the class. Just like what we’ve discussed, even students who have lower scores and small
interest in learning can be accepted to a “favorite school” if they live nearby. The problem is
usually favorite schools’ teaching method is designed to suit the students that have good tracks
in their academic or at least the students have to keep up with school’s standards. It’s obvious
that the students with small interest in learning have to put more effort in class. And so are the
teachers, they need to work more with the teaching method so the students can get the same
quality of the education. It will make the teaching method less effective because the students
with small interest have to take longer time to work with everything. It will give more exposure
to the gap between the “smart” students and the “not so smart” students.
The government’s intention actually was a good idea to make sure that everyone
gets the same quality of education. But the system sometimes can be so troublesome for some
people. The main thing that we have to keep in mind is in order to get a good education, there’s
should be a willingness in every each of us. It’s good to think about how people can get the
same quality, but it more matters if we consider the people that has more consciousness to learn
more.
