Introduction

Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high.

Glucose comes from the foods you eat. There is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your

cells to give them energy it is called insulin. With type 1 diabetes, your body does not make

insulin. With type 2 diabetes, the more common type, your body does not make or use insulin

well. Without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood. You can also have prediabetes.

This means that your blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be called

diabetes. Having prediabetes puts you at a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes. Over time,

having too much glucose in your blood can cause serious problems. It can damage your eyes,

kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes can also cause heart disease, stroke and even the need to remove a

limb. Pregnant women can also get diabetes, called gestational diabetes. (U.S National Library of

Medicine, 2017)

Diabetes cannot only be inherit but can also get from our lifestyle. On the food we eat up

to the exercise we have done. It is also not exclusive for adults but also in children. So be aware

with what you are eating and also drink a lot of water.

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases that makes every person suffer until dies. It

is not only in the Philippines but also in different countries all around the world. Most diabetic

patients usually visit hospitals and medical centers for treatment and medications. The Insulin

plant was used in Ayurvedic medicine in India because of its ability to stabilize the blood sugar

and treat diabetes. It is called Insulin plant due to its anti-diabetic properties. (Nelz 2018)
Malunggay or Moringa Oleifera is commonly known as horse-radish tree in the Western

world. This miracle tree is known as fast-growing and drought-resistant tree which mostly grows

in tropical countries. Malunggay leaves are a lot more nutritious than most other foods. It locked

away in the green leaves of the malunggay is a cornucopia of vitamins and minerals that make it

such a powerful vegetable. Its leaves contain twice more protein than milk, thrice more

potassium than bananas, four times more Vitamin A than carrots, and seven times more Vitamin

C than oranges. Malunggay has medicinal properties for Headache and Diabetes. It has

medicinal properties that can help alleviate a variety of maladies. It can help relieve headaches

and migraines and heal ulcers, making it a better alternative to your usual painkillers. It can also

normalize blood sugar, thus helping in the prevention of diabetes. (Cornejo, 2018)

Statement of the problem

1. How much Malunggay and Insulin Plant is needed to make the dessert?

2. How many Insulin and Malunggay dessert can a diabetic person eat in a day?

3. How long is the effect of the Insulin and Malunggay dessert to a person?

4. How effective is the Insulin Plant with Malunggay as a potential gelatin dessert for a diabetic

person?
Objectives

The main objective of this study is to produce a dessert that is made up from Insulin Plant with

Malunggay. The study specifically aims to:

1. To measure the amount of Insulin Plant and Malunggay needed in dessert.

2. To determine the number of Insulin Plant and Malunggay dessert that a diabetic person are

capable to consume.

3. To know when the effect of Insulin Plant and Malunggay to a person will last.

4. To observe the effectiveness of Insulin Plant and Malunggay as a potential gelatin dessert for

diabetic person

Scope and Limitation

This study focuses on how the Insulin Plant and Malunggay helps diabetic person to control

their blood sugar. The data collection will be conducted at Alfonso National High School, school

year 2019-2020. This study will not cover the other problems that is not on the range of diabetes.

Those people who is not diabetic are not within the scope of this research.

Definition of terms

Insulin plant- (Costus Igneus) For in India, belongs to the family Costaceae. Consumption of the

leaves are believed to lower blood glucose levels, and diabetics who consumed the leaves of this

plant did report a fall in their blood glucose levels.

Malunggay- (Moringa oleifera) is known as the “miracle tree” or “nature's medicinal cabinet” and

no doubt it is. It's leaves, trunks, roots and seeds possesses various substances and its health

benefits are high.

Gelatin -a virtually colorless and tasteless water-soluble protein prepared from collagen and used

in food preparation as the basis of jellies, in photographic processes, and in glue.

Dessert- the sweet course eaten at the end of a meal.

Blood Sugar or blood glucose-. Glucose that come from your food that is being store on your

blood because of insufficient insulin supply.

Blood Sugar level -The level or rate of glucose or sugar in the blood

Diabetes- is a disease in which your blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels are too high. Glucose

comes from the foods you eat. Insulin is a hormone that helps the glucose get into your cells to

give them energy. With type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin.

Review of Related Literature

Studies about the insulin plant or Costus Igneus are mostly about the different uses, the

history ,the purpose and the use and medicinal values. While the studies about malunggay or

Moringa Oleifera are about it’s health benefits, nutritive importance and its uses.

Foreign Literature

Related studies that can be found on the internet are from places all around the world. These

studies will be used as a basis and as a reference by the researchers. According to Flowerlet

Mathew and Bimi Varghese which has the study about the medicinal exploration of the Insulin

plant (January –February 2019) . Their study says that a diabetes patient have to chew on the

insulin plants leaves for about a month and the diabetic person have to take two leave each day,

one in the morning and one in the evening. Their conclusion is that the insulin plant or (0Costus

Igneus) is an important medicinal herb. Most of the studies called the insulin plant as a folk

medicine famous in India and most of them also states that it does work in keeping the blood sugar

low. It also have anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and hypolipidemic potential as

evidenced by research.

Moving onto the foreign studies about Moringa Oleifera, as said earlier most studies are

about it’s health benefits and when the researchers use this plant their respondents will get these

health benefits.
According to Atli Arnarson, PhD on May 4, 2018 , that malunggay is very nutritious and

that almost every part of the tree is used for medicinal purposes. The article says that malunggay

contains protein, Vitamin A, B6 and C, as well as Iron, Riboflavin and Magnesium. The second

nutritional fact is that Moringa have antioxidants, including Quercetin which may help lower blood

pressure and Chlorogenic Acid which may help moderate blood sugar levels. In addition to the

vitamins and antioxidants are the anti-inflammation and it is said to also help lowering cholesterol.

Local Literature

Since this Study is being conducted in Philippines, the Moringa Oleifera is very popular

here as well and the insulin plant isn’t foreign in this country there are some studies conducted in

here too. There is one article on https://www.flickr.com published on June 4,2015 that says that a

spoonful of powdered Moringa is gives 14% protein, 40% calcium, and 23% iron and lots of

vitamin A. It also says on the article that Moringa can be used as an aphrodisiac.

The Insulin Plant’s medicinal properties is also acknowledge here in the Philippines, there is a

page just for Insulin plant called Insulin Plant in Bataan where they share information about the

herb. Though their information is just the same as the ones from the foreign countries.

Research Methodology

This chapter discusses the organized plan of the study that involves set of procedure and

methods used in gathering and analyzing measurements of variables given in the research problem.

It compromises the following: research design, research procedure, research instrument and

sampling technique.

Research design

The researchers applied the experimental design in conducting the study. This design

involves the formulating of the question and hypothesis, testing the hypothesis and analyzing of

data. This design is used because of its capability of determining the result or the performance of

the product.

Experimental design is used to easily manipulate the variables in the study. It is use to

know the possibility of Insulin Plant and Malungay dessert as a potential gelatin dessert for

Diabetic person. In order to determine the effectiveness of the product, the researchers choose the

respondents that have diabetes.

Research procedure

In order to conduct the study, the ingredients needed are Insulin Plant and Malungay as the

main ingredient for the Insulin Plant and Malungay dessert. The researchers also use evaporated

milk and gelatin powder.

Materials needed:

 Blender

 Tupperware or any container

 Caserole

The following are the method used in preparing the product. The Insulin Plant is placed

inside the blender to have the extract. We also put Malungay inside the blender to have it minced.

After that, the gelatin powder is preparing to boil. If the gelatin is boiling mixed the minced

Malungay and extract of Insulin plant. Add evaporated milk. Put in a container tupperwares will

do. Wait until it becomes solid and it is ready to eat.

Research Instrument
The instrument used in the study is survey questionnaire. It is a questionnaire that

cointains question that can be answered by strongly agree (4), agree (3), disagree (4), and

strongly disagree (5).

The questionnaire may serve as the researchers guide in knowing the effectiveness of

Insulin Plant and Malungay as dessert. The survey questionnaire helps the research in knowing

the possibility of Insulin Plant and malungay as a potential gelatin dessert.

The survey questionnaire is used in asking questions that needs a higher thinking strategy

of inferential, creative, critical, analytical, and appreciative thinking to discover more

understandable ideas. Before the distribution of survey questionnaire, the respondents will be

trying the Insulin Plant and Malunggay dessert. The questionnaire will be then analyzed by the

researchers and come up with its result.

Sampling technique

The researchers used the purposive sampling technique in selecting the respondents. It is

defined as non probability sampling that is based on the criteria or bases for selection that the

researchers need on the study. The respondent must meet all pre-defined criteria for selection.

The respondents are characterized by having diabetes. The purpose of this study is to

control the sugar level of the diabetic person even after eating rice and dessert.
Conceptual Framework

This study focuses on the feasibility of Gabi as an organic paper. The paper can be used

for crafts and writing.
