Southern Reconstruction Period
Objectives:
Students will be able to… accurately recall the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments.
Students will be able to… describe the inequality of whites and colored people before the
reconstruction period in the south and compare how/ if it got better after reconstruction.
State Standards:
4.5.CE Analyze the impact of federal legislation on the South during Reconstruction.
Context:
This lesson will be a continuation of the topic from the class before. In the previous lesson,
we learned about some of the roles of various groups in the reconstruction period. Today we
will be focusing on the south and how reconstruction affected life in the south. In the
students next lesson, they will be learning about reconstruction as a turning point in America.
Students will learn more about how life was for people of a different skin tone. They will be
able to identify the inequalities in America during this time.
Data:
Students will be grouped in groups of 5’s, based on their previous classes exit ticket answers.
The groups will each have high, middle and low achieving students. I am grouping my
students this way to see if having a mix of groups will help students to better understand the
lesson and retain the information better. This lessons exit ticket will be a Kahoot on
reconstruction and the three learned amendments to the constitution.

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes): Students will come in and know to look on the board for
the warm up and also instructions on what they will need for class that day and what they can
leave in their desks. Todays warm up will be “What was the Reconstruction Period? When
was the Reconstruction period?” Students are to answer this question in their History
notebooks. Students will have approximately 5 minutes to complete this warmup and then it
will be discussed. After we have gone over their warm up question, I will discuss with the
students what they will be doing for the day and explain the groups. Students will be grouped
together and begin their groups.

Teacher Directed (25 minutes):

- Students will discuss with me the major groups in the reconstruction period. It
is important we go over the lesson from the previous class because it is the backbone
of this lesson as well as the lessons to follow. I want to make sure all students
understand the previous lesson with 95% accuracy. We will go over a Quizlet and talk
about the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment by reading the information on this website
about reconstruction together. We will also answer the 10 question quiz as a group if
time allows. Reconstruction Quizlet . Students can ask questions about the previous
lesson and about the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment.

Collaborative (25 minutes):

In this group, students will be using their interactiveconstitution app that will allow
them to go over the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. Each student will then fill out the
amendment worksheet (attached below). Students will have an open discussion with one
another how these amendments have helped to shape our country and establish equality for
everyone.
Independent Digital (25 minutes):
In the independent group, students are to watch the Liberty Kids, on their personal
learning devices with headphones, explain reconstruction in the south. They will be asked to
take notes of things they feel are important during the video, we will go over these key facts
during our next lessons teacher directed group.

Closure (10):
Students are to go back to their seats and take out their personal learning devices and
log on to Kahoot. We will then play (https://create.kahoot.it/details/the-civil-war-era-
reconstruction/4e228507-3b3d-4171-ad95-e891e23c9527) the Kahoot and I will have the
scores sent to me for the nest days group assignments.

Rationale:
InteractiveConstitution App:
This app allows students to interact with the constitution 1 on 1 and really get to know
it. It has common interpretations of the amendments which allows for students to have a
better interpretation the amendments. I think this app will help students to get nice and
personal with the amendments and really understand what they are looking at and learning
about.

Liberty Kids Youtube Video:

This video (Liberty Kids) puts reconstruction in a way a child could easily understand
what they are talking about and trying to teach, and it is also like a cartoon. I would hope this
would intrigue my students and make them feel as if they are watching an interesting cartoon
about something they are learning rather than an assignment.

Website on : reconstruction
I chose this website because it not only has a lot of information on the 13th, 14th and
15th amendments but it also has information about reconstruction all together. There is also a
quiz at the end of the text that goes along with what has been said in the text.
