N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Michael Tiger Manns Dates of Activity: 08.22.2019 and 10.11.2019

Faculty name: Yvette Matheson

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

For the first community service event was for the College of Nursing Steele Innovative
Learning Center (CON SILC) in late August. For this role, I was a liaison for the faculty
in the CON SILC – I aided by educating returning nursing students in their roles as
student nurses, the uses of their supplies given during the day, how to properly identify
said equipment, and the new rules that the SILC implemented over the summer. As such,
my main role during this event was both leadership of group sessions and educating of
students.

For the second community service activity, I aided the SILC lab during their Family
Weekend event. I educated incoming nursing students, potential CON applicants, and
visiting families about the simulation rooms, mannequins, and healthcare instruments
found in the facility. Specifically, I educated visitors about PICC lines, IV insertion, IV
pumps, injection sites, and lab blood draw tubes. My role was to both be an advocate for
the CON and to lead education sessions about various nursing skills and activities.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

The first event was held at the CON SILC within the main lab room (room 250). It lasted
from 7:30am – 11:30pm for a total of four hours.

The Family Weekend event was held at the CON SILC room 275C, lasting from 1pm –
5pm for a total of four hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

These two events were both valuable experiences to me, as I reinforced my understanding
of previous semesters equipment, skills, and tools given to us during the semesters. Also,
it aided in reinforcing SILC rules and guidelines. Most importantly, I was able to meet,
educate, and discuss nursing practices with the “public,” fellow nursing colleagues, and
their families. It also gave credence to the nursing profession to those who may be
unfamiliar with what nursing entails.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
I will hopefully be able to use the skills I learned here further on in my nursing career.
When it comes to unit wide management (i.e. a charge nurse position), I plan on using the
lateral/interdisciplinary leadership and communication skills I was able to hone during
the first SILC event. Plus, being able to identify and specify healthcare tools and items
would definitely aid if I were to be floated to a unit which had items unfamiliar to me.
The second event aided me by giving me knowledge in what works with teaching and
what does not work with teaching. It reinforced my understanding of the need to break
down acronyms, speak medical terminology in layman terms, and letting people know
what procedures are being done for illnesses and why. This I can take into my nursing
career easily as I will always need to educate as long as I am a nurse – it’s a core duty.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend both of these experience in the future. The first event not only helps
by introducing you to other nursing colleagues (which does not happen all too often in
the CON), it also reinforces previous semesters information and greatly orientates you to
the SILC lab faculty and their duties. Plus, through providing education and small group
instructions, you learn delegation and introductory managerial skills which can be
applicable in many nursing situations.

The second opportunity was fun and educational. I learned much about myself (i.e. my
ability to teach), what works and what doesn’t work, how to better prepare for
presentations, and the public opinion of nursing as a profession. I think it gives back what
you give into it and as such can be very rewarding.
