BISC 2020 MANILA

1 OVERVIEW
Beaconhouse International Student Convention (BISC) offers a unique experience to students:
an opportunity to travel, meet and engage in competition with students from all over the
world. This convention includes an amazing array of sporting, art, science and cultural
activities where Beaconhouse students from various countries participate and compete on an
international platform.
Beaconhouse has successfully organized three editions of BISC so far, in Bangkok, Malaysia
and Muscat. Philippines has been selected to host the next BISC event, which is scheduled to
be held on 11 – 12 February, 2020, in Manila.
The event format has been evolving and has become more inclusive with successive events.
The format of the upcoming BISC is similar to the last event, with minor amendments. UAE
would be an additional team this time around. Chess and BISC Connections have been
included as additional competition categories, while Badminton has replaced Table Tennis.

* This is the number of students attending the event at the venue. The actual number of participants is higher since
participants for some categories do not travel to the venue and only send their projects/exhibits.

For the upcoming event, all participating countries are advised to start organizing pre-event
competitions, if not initiated already, and select finalists for the main event in February 2020.
Each participating country will choose their teams in the best way suitable for them. However
they must run in-country competitions to shortlist students for the country team, providing
opportunity to as many eligible students as possible. Ideally, the selected students should get
time to practice as a team and interact/ bond before travelling. Some of the countries may
have dovetailed the selection for BISC with their local competitions as part of the annual

calendar. One of the key objectives for holding BISC is to provide a platform to the wider
Beaconhouse community to interact with each other and experience different cultures. It is
for this reason that you are advised to encourage a wider pool of students, especially first
timers to present themselves for selection. Students who have participated in any two of the
earlier three editions of BISC would not be eligible to participate in BISC 2020.
Event theme for BISC 2020 is “Interconnected Futures”. There have been some modifications
in the theme dimensions from the last event. Please refer to Section 4 of the document for
an introduction to the theme and revised dimensions. Students participating in the STEAM
competitions must follow the theme strands for their respective competition categories as
mentioned in Sections 4 and 5.
You are advised to conclude in-country competitions by November 30, 2019 to keep adequate
margin for processing visas, for participants who require a visa for travel to Philippines, and
finalize travel arrangements. Please refer to the Section 3 for suggested timelines.
Event schedule will be shared once available. You are advised to strictly adhere to the
assigned age limits for each competition category.
Please ensure that all the participants, teachers and coaches associated with selecting,
coaching or ancillary roles have read and understood the relevant sections of the document.
Ignorance of guidelines/ rules may result in disqualification of a participant at the discretion
of the tournament official committee.

3 GENERAL GUIDELINES
 One of the key objectives for holding BISC is to provide a platform to the wider
Beaconhouse community to interact with each other and experience different
cultures. It is for this reason that you are advised to encourage a larger pool of
students, especially first timers to present themselves for selection.

 The event should be well advertised amongst all the schools to provide an opportunity
for selection to as many eligible students as possible.

 Country/ Regional offices are requested to ensure that the contingent leads, staff and
participating students are aware that they are strongly expected to respect the host
country’s cultural norms.

 The students are required to come up with their original work for the STEAM
competitions. They must mention support (from teachers/ others), if any, that they
may have received during developing art/science or other projects or exhibits. They
must cite the sources that they consulted for their work. The students participating in
BISC Talks and BISC Film Festival must also reference the source appropriately if they
are quoting or relying on someone else’s thoughts or work.

 Each country office must assign a person/team to guide, monitor and select the
students for the main event. Each country would design its own selection process for
sporting and STEAM competitions/events. However, they must ensure maximum
participation from amongst its student body. The country offices will coordinate with
the host country for travel and logistics arrangement. Contact details of the relevant
persons will be communicated in due course.

 The selection process should be in line with the timeline given in the following section
and ensure that the selected art and science installations, short films, postcards, and
photographs follow the event theme/strand, as the case may be. For any clarifications,
please get in touch with the Education Department, HO (contact details are mentioned
in the following section).

 Students who have participated in any two of the earlier three editions of BISC would
not be eligible to participate in BISC for a third time.

 Each country would put together a cultural performance from amongst its
participating students. It should be of 3-5 minutes duration, for each country, and
should not exceed 5 minutes in any case, including setup and clearing time. The
performance would be scheduled with the closing ceremony, subject to finalization of
the event program.

 All countries should strictly follow the agreed timelines for selection, finalization and
communication of the details of the participating students and staff to the host
country so that the host team can make adequate and timely arrangements.

6|Page
BISC 2020 MANILA

 Each country will assign a primary contact person and a secondary contact to
coordinate with host country and HO for pre-event activities. This may involve any
clarifications on the guidelines, exchange of list & related information on selected
students, rooms’ allocation plan, flight schedules, coordination with Corporate
Communication (RO and HO) for marketing initiatives and any other area for which
respective countries, HO and host country may need assistance from one another.
Please assign the contact persons and share the contact details with host country and
HO within a week of receiving this document for smooth coordination.

 Each country will assign a contact person (this can be the same or different person as
above), who will be travelling with the country team, for coordination with host
country office for travel and logistics arrangements. The contact person will be part of
the teachers/official travelling with the teams and would serve as the team lead/
contact person.

 Team lead from respective countries should be responsible for the safety and needs
of their students once they reach airport/collection point for departure till they return
from the event to their destinations for pickup by the parents. The staff should also
ensure that students follow the flight, transport and event schedules/ timing. While
safety and security is the duty of the Team lead and accompanying staff and they are
requested to ensure the same, in case of any emergency such as a child getting lost or
separated from the team, they should be aware of SOPs developed by the respective
country teams for any eventuality.

 Our students and staff are ambassadors of Beaconhouse and as such are required to
maintain appropriate behavior and exemplary ethics throughout the visit, including
but not limited to, during travel, competition/event and stay in the host country. Team
lead would be responsible for ensuring compliance.

 Qualifying students in the categories of BISC Art, BISC Exploratoria, BISC Idol, BISC
Quiz, BISC Talks, and Sports would be travelling to Philippines for participation in the
main event. They must be available and willing to travel independent of parent/
guardian on the event dates. The qualifying students would be traveling in groups
accompanied by teachers/ staff.

 Guardian/ Parent consent for the participation in the event is necessary. Guardian/
Parent must grant Beaconhouse the right to use and publish event photographs/
videos/ sound recordings of their children for educational or promotional purposes
(including marketing collateral, sponsorship, etc.). Sample consent and other forms
have been attached with this document as a reference which can be tweaked as per
local requirements/ regulations. Country/regional offices must ensure that the
respective schools have received signed forms from the parents of every participating
student before the event.

 As mentioned above, the travel, accommodation and meals etc. related expenses
would be sponsored by Beaconhouse (respective participating countries). Students

7|Page
BISC 2020 MANILA

are not required to carry cash, unless they want to spend out of their own choice.
However, a student must not carry more than US dollars 100, or equivalent, in any
case.

 Students will not be allowed to independently move around (or with their parents who
may be traveling to Philippines).

 There should be an SOP by all countries for parents, who want to travel for the
convention, on what they should/ should not expect from the Beaconhouse organizers
and on how and when they would be allowed to interact with students during the
event phase, if at all. It is advised that any parents traveling to Philippines should stay
in a different hotel. Such parents should make their own travel, visa, transportation,
meals and accommodation arrangements, and Beaconhouse would not be responsible
for any such arrangements. Parents should strictly refrain from entering competition
fields/areas or in any way interfering with the proceedings at the venues or hotel or
during related activities. All participating countries should, however, provide the host
country with a list of parents who would be attending any activities at the sports
complex so that they could be issued identification tags. Host country may provide a
list of recommended hotels for parents’ convenience. Parents would not be allowed
at the Gala evening due to limited seating available. Gala evening would only be
attended by students/staff and invitees of the host country. Parents would not be
allowed to travel on buses designated for the students and have to make their own
arrangements. Students will strictly have to accompany their respective teams all the
way from their home countries to the host country and back. Students will be handed
over to their parents/guardians once the team arrives back in the home country at a
pre-designated place.

 Students / parents who do not agree or conform to any of the guidelines would not
be eligible to participate/travel.

 Air ticket, accommodation and meals would be sponsored by Beaconhouse. All

country offices would bear their respective costs.

o Primary responsibility for visa & travel arrangements would be with respective
country offices. Countries should find out the relevant costs and ensure that
processing times are managed within the designated timelines for the event.

o Please note that the Philippines office will arrange for hotel reservations,
however, the payment has to be made by the respective countries. The
amount can be remitted ahead of the event or at the spot before checking out.
Confirmed rates will be communicated in due course.

o The event management, accommodation (facilitation/coordination only),

transportation within Manila, selection of judges, security, entertainment
program, gala dinner, media coverage, medals/certificates/trophies and prize

BISC 2020 MANILA

distribution ceremony will be handled by the Philippines office, with due

guidance from RO, SEA.

 Further travel related/other instructions/details may be shared with the qualifying

students before the event dates.

 It is highly preferred that selection of the students is based on “one student – one
sport/STEAM activity” principle since participation in multiple competitions, at times,
results in timing clash within the various competitions schedule. Any schedules
presented in this document may be indicative only. The final schedule would be locked
in only near the event dates due to various logistical and planning variables, and
shared with all the teams. Replacement for injuries/other reasons during the event
will be acceptable only if it does not affect the event schedule and considered by the
Tournament Committee at its discretion.

3.1 Timelines
o Each country will share the contact details of the assigned persons for pre-
event coordination with the host country and HO within a week of receiving
this document for smooth coordination.

o In-house competitions and selection process must be completed by November

30, 2019. Process for visa application should begin immediately after the
selection, for those requiring visa for travel to Philippines.

o Visas and travel arrangements should be in place by the end of December,

2019. However, please consult with HO International Division before
confirming seat reservations.

o Any special dietary requirements for any members of the contingent must be
communicated to the Philippines office by January 15, 2020.

o Qualifying postcard exhibits and photographs for Photography competition

must reach Philippines by January 24, 2020 for framing and installation at the
event venue. Qualifying films for the Film competition should preferably be
also sent at the same time, and a copy of the film should be carried by the team
lead traveling with the squad, in the required format.

o Country teams would carry art and science installations/projects when they
travel to Philippines for the event. However, country offices would ensure that
the photos/specifications such as space and other requirements, soft copy of
students’ statements for the art installations and science projects must reach
Philippines by January 24, 2020. All such items should be duly labeled for ease
of identification and reference. For details, please refer to Section 5.1.

o Each country office must brief the qualifying students about the travel
arrangements by January 24, 2020, or earlier. Respective country offices/

4 BISC 2020 THEME: INTERCONNECTED FUTURES

BISC events tend to follow theme of the most recent School of Tomorrow (SOT) events,
organised by Beaconhouse as part of its ongoing commitment to developing and promoting
social awareness and responsibility. SOT events started in the year 2000 as a free-to-public
event series. The events aim to raise awareness and further the cause of education, to share
knowledge with the public and private educational sectors on key topics such as the future of
schools/schooling, best classroom practices around the world and pedagogy. Over the years,
the series has featured hundreds of activists, cultural leaders, educators, futurists and
thinkers from around the world. Theme for 2018 and 2019 series of SOT is ‘A World of
Tomorrow Reimagined’ with the following five dimensions:

 A Symbiotic Future
 A Balanced Future
 An Expressive Future
 An Inclusive Future
 An Unknown Future

Keeping in sync with the same, BISC 2020 theme will be: Interconnected Futures.

Our past cultures, languages, knowledge, technologies continue to affect us today and inform
our daily processes and structures in the present. Similarly today and the present are paving
the way for our futures. Rapid modifications in world politics, climate and technology present
us with the dilemma of solving problems that previously did not exist.

Similarly our schools and our students are faced with unprecedented challenges. According
to the Institute for the Future (IFTF) report titled “The Next Era of Human and Machine
Partnerships” 85% of the job that will exist in 2030 have not been invented yet. The US
Department of Labour Report concurs that 65% of children in school now will partake in jobs
that have yet to exist. The question for schools now is how to prepare children for a globalized
workforce, continuous retraining and an entrepreneurial mindset.

Thomas Friedman, author of The World is Flat, articulates this comprehensively:

“In recent years, though, with the levelling of the global playing field, it should be apparent
that we are not just competing against ourselves. The opening up of countries like India, China,
and Russia means that their young people can plug and play—connect, collaborate, and
compete— more easily and cheaply than ever before. And they are. We, alas, are still coasting
along as if we have all the time in the world.”

However where there are artificial intelligence and intelligent automation replacing human
jobs, we must focus on nurturing all kinds of talents, aptitudes and interdisciplinary skills and
knowledge. Becoming cognizant of Interconnected Futures is the only way of perceiving,
understanding and achieving sustainability, survival and continuous growth.

11 | P a g e
BISC 2020 MANILA

The Five Dimensions of the SOT aim to create a habitable environment that acknowledges
and develops an understanding of Interconnected Futures; where every students’ potential is
drawn and cultivated, their imagination is explored, their love for music, literature, art,
humanity is celebrated and interdisciplinary approaches towards problem solving are
discovered. The Beaconhouse International Student Convention is an opportunity to
revolutionize our approaches and attitudes towards learning and relearning. It empowers
students to flourish as connected members of the global society and thrive in harmonious
multi-ethnic, interdisciplinary and partnering cultures.

4.1 STEAM Events - Descriptors and Dimensions/themes

Please find below the descriptors for the BISC 2020 STEAM Events:

BISC Connections
Inclusive Future | Off Grid Networks: Postcard Design Competition
We live in a world that is more connected than it has ever been before. The internet has made
information sharing and communication available at our fingertips through basic technology.
However there are still areas in our world that do not enjoy these privileges due to war,
poverty and political situations. The Diary of Anne Frank presents a singular experience of
isolation in times of war. Her diary is proof that despite lack of communication structures and
networks, there are continuously ways for people to connect and communicate.

If you could share postcards with communities and areas that are currently suffering due to
war, poverty or political circumstances and are off the grid of internet and technology; what
would your postcards look like and what message would you like to share with them?

BISC Click
Expressive Future | Citizen Journalism—If I was a photojournalist, I should investigate…
Photojournalists have a great responsibility to objectively highlight, research and investigate
social, cultural, economic and political events that the public may or may not have access to.
Photojournalists have a greater responsibility in capturing the true elements in their
experiences. They choose what to crop out, what to focus on and the extent of editing that is
ethically appropriate without doctoring the image. Through history photojournalists like
Dorothea Lange and Nick Ut have been pivotal in triggering drastic changes in the public’s
mindsets.
If you were a journalist what would you investigate and photograph in the world today?

BISC 2020 MANILA

BISC Film Festival

Symbiotic Future | Identities in the Symbiotic Future: Short Film Making
We exist now in a world that offers us participation in multiple kinds of reality; social media
realities, game realities, government databases, avatars and many other virtual realities. Our
identity and uniqueness translates according to the rules and requirements of the systems
we partake in.
‘Identities in the Symbiotic Future’ encourages participants to inquire and question the
effects, privileges or dangers to our self-identity by sharing and partaking in different digital
worlds.

BISC Art
Unknown Future | The Interstellar Universe: Art Installation
Post-Apocalyptic life outside the sphere of Earth, Black-holes and Interstellar travel have
fascinated mankind from millennia. There are books, films, scientific documentaries, colossal
telescopes that attempt to visualize and experience the mystery of space travel.
How would you imagine and represent your version of space?

BISC Talks
Unknown Future | Artificial Intelligence and Mindware: Panel Discussion
“The computer scientist Marvin Minsky once described the human brain as a meat machine
no more no less. It is, to be sure, an ugly phrase. But it is also a striking image, a compact
expression of both the genuine scientific excitement and the rather gung-ho materialism that
tended to characterize the early years of cognitive scientific research. Mindware—our
thoughts, feelings, hopes, fears, beliefs, and intellect—is cast as nothing but the operation of
the biological brain, the meat machine in our head. This notion of the brain as a meat machine
is interesting, for it immediately invites us to focus not so much on the material (the meat) as
on the machine: the way the material is organized and the kinds of operation it supports. The
same machine can, after all, often be made of iron, or steel, or tungsten, or whatever. What
we confront is thus both a rejection of the idea of mind as immaterial spirit-stuff and an
affirmation that mind is best studied from a kind of engineering perspective that reveals the
nature of the machine that all that wet, white, grey, and sticky stuff happens to build.”-Andy
Clark-Mindware, An Introduction to the Philosophy of Cognitive Science, Oxford University
Press, USA (2000)

Students will conduct a panel discussion on AI, Mindware and question whether the Human
brain is truly a version of software that can be installed, corrupted or even be overtaken and
overthrown by a superior race of technology, robotics and AI.

BISC Quiz
Balanced Future | The UN and its impact on us: Quiz
The United Nations is an entity that we all often hear about on television, social media and
many activist forums. The UN is an intergovernmental organization that was developed in
1945 after the Second World War to maintain International peace, security and co-operation
between countries. The UN includes 193 Member States, 2 Observer States, 6 Main Organs
including; the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the
Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat; and many
other specialized agencies and programs. The UN has currently modelled 17 Sustainable
Development Goals that they aim to achieve by the year 2030. ‘The UN and its impact on us’
Quiz will be an opportunity for students to learn and develop a deeper understanding of the
17 SDGs and how they are interconnected to each country’s progress.

BISC Idol
Expressive Future | The World as My Stage: Singing Challenge
Music and singing practices have evolved in the same way as the advancement of technique
and instruments in all creative fields. Beaconhouse urges its students to explore the sounds,
musical traditions and iconic songs. ‘The World is My Stage’ singing challenge is a chance for
students to revisit, reanalyse the range of classical to contemporary music and singing that
coexist and influence their lives.
Participants will perform a song that represents their connection to the global village of
singing and music.

BISC Exploratoria
Symbiotic Future | Interdisciplinary Sciences: Science Project
We all bear a significant historical responsibility to ensure comprehensive, balanced, and
sustainable economic and social development for the global population. In today’s world,
scientific literacy is critical to help meet the challenges for sustainable development.
The Science Project competition lays the foundation for students to invent, experiment and
investigate new approaches and solutions to tackle global challenges. The aim of these
interdisciplinary STEAM projects is to provide answers that are testable and reproducible.
These project may address issues such as feeding the growing population on the planet
without destroying it, alternative forms of future energy, elimination of poverty, equal access
to health care and critical issues of water wastage.
Students will create projects using smart technology and efficient use of resources.

6) Chess (Boys / Girls)

The tournament will be played Round Robin format of five rounds (each player plays against
every other player). The match will be played according to the general rules and regulations of
FIDE (World Chess Federations) with a few exceptions.

Squad: A team consisting of one player (a boy or a girl).

Uniform: Players should be in uniform with a country name / player name / number on the
back, trouser and shirt (boy/girl).

Play Area: A reasonable area within the BISC venue will be used for the tournament.

Equipment / Implements: Adequate chess boards, black & white chess pieces, digital chess
clock, table and chairs.

Length of the game: This will be a Speed Chess tournament. Each player will be given 10
minutes per game / round match to play. Once a player has made a move, he will press the
button to start opponent’s clock. If a player runs out of time and the opponent calls the time,
the player who ran out of time loses the game (unless the opponent does not have enough pieces
to checkmate, in which case it is a draw). Each player targets to checkmate the opponent’s king.
If a king cannot escape checkmate then the game is over. Occasionally a game may not end
with a winner, but with a draw. There are 5 reasons why a chess game may end in a draw:
 The position reaches a stalemate where it is one player’s turn to move, but his king is
NOT in check and yet he does not have another legal move.
 There are not enough pieces on the board to force a checkmate (example: a king and a
bishop vs. a king).
 A player declares a draw if the same exact position is repeated three times (though not
necessarily three times in a row).
 Fifty consecutive moves have been played where neither player has moved a pawn or
captured a piece.
 The players may simply agree to a draw and stop playing.

General Rules of Chess Tournament:

 The player with the white pieces moves first.

 Promotion, En Passant and Castling is allowed (according to chess defined rules).
 If a player touches one of their own pieces they must move that piece as long as it is a
legal move. If a player touches an opponent’s piece, they must capture that piece. A
player who wishes to touch a piece only to adjust it on the board must first announce
the intention, usually by saying “adjust”.

41 | P a g e
BISC 2020 MANILA

 Outside assistance (parent / coach / other player or spectator) during the game is not
allowed.
 Treat chess pieces and boards with respect. Stand and organize pieces on the side of the
board when captured.
 Losing player needs to set up the board for next round.

Scoring: Players will be awarded two (2) points for a win, one point (1) for a draw and zero
(0) for a loss.

Arbiter: The qualified arbiter’s decision at all times will be final.
