DEDICATION

Lifestyle is like the way of planting a plant it is up to the sower where he or

she wants to sow the plant, if the plant sowed in a good soil surely the sower

will benefit to its fruit, but if it is planted on a wrong type of soil then the

consequence will be to the sower.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Life is a great gift from God, which gives men a chance to experience

the beauty of living in this world. Not everyone is lucky to have a good

living some people have suffered in poverty while others secure themselves

into a successful or prosperous life. Every individual has the opportunity to

improve one's living depending on each determination. Lifestyle is an

important thing that every individual should consider because it is the basis

of man’s living. However, lifestyle varies in different types of the manner of

living depending on how a person behaves and acts accordingly.

In the Philippines, there are lots of shipping companies that give

opportunities to seafarers, and Cebu is one of the cities in the Philippines

that provide skilled seafarers in shipping companies, so it's expected that the

City of Cebu has many retired seafarers. This study will focus on the

lifestyle of retired seafarers in Cebu. This aims to draw out inspiration from

retired seafarers.

There is a standard of thumbs that says, "an individual should spending

plan a specific level of their salary towards retirement". There is a

2

contending hypothesis that says that an individual should spending plan for

retirement depends on the way of life the person intends to appreciate, not

the salary that the individual as of now wins (Pant, 2019).Many seafarers fail

to manage their lifestyle because of poor knowledge about how to handle

themselves for good, most of these things are in financial and health aspects,

but as years past things become more worthy of attention. In spite of highly

lucrative job offers, adventurous working environment, and a “globetrotting”

lifestyle, most of these seafarers suddenly decide to quit their ship jobs by

accepting opportunities offshore Raunek, et al., (2019), this is because of

unsettled lifestyle.

Coping this problem is an essential thing to do so that the career of the

seafarers will be assured or secured, and, at the time of their retirement they

will have a stable lifestyle. The study will find out if there are changes in

lifestyle after retirement, said to be that, there might be some changes in

lifestyle often working on board.

3

Theoretical Background

This study aims to determine the personal lifestyle of the retired

seafarers anchored on Continuity Theory of Robert Atchley and Role Theory

of Margaret Mead, Talcott Parsons, and Robert Merton.

Coherence Theory of Atchley (1993) gives a structure to see how

grown-ups utilize past ideas, builds, and encounters to adjust and acclimate

to the progressions achieved by typical maturing. The hypothesis expects

that moderately aged and more seasoned people endeavor to protect existing

inner and outer progression when settling on versatile decisions in one's

lives. As per Atchley, Continuity Theory has been utilized in understanding

change following retirement. This hypothesis underlined that it is the general

propensity of people to keep up consistency in life designs without

numerous disturbances. Thus, alterations are considered by the retiree in

retirement life as an approach to keep up and proceed with one's way of life

examples and connections.

The hypothesis recommends that individuals continue as before over

their lives in mental terms. On the off chance that an individual is dynamic

in middle age, all things considered, this degree of action will be held, on

condition that the relating condition of wellbeing makes this conceivable.

4

Accordingly, the individuals who were dynamic during the pre-retirement

life will search for an open door even after retirement (Atchley, 2000).

Atchley noticed that individuals in their maturing procedure endeavor

to keep up outer and inward structures. The assets the retirees utilize in their

assignments are drawn from their life story and from the social world to

which they have a place. Changes are connected and exist to the view of the

past, yet the mental structures in the social conduct of individuals will, in

general, be kept up. Furthermore, Atchley (2002) comprehends the quest for

coherence as a versatile technique invigorated both by singular inclinations

and social input.

The reason for the Continuity hypothesis is based upon criticism

frameworks. More established people pursue interior systems, working from

long periods of input and experience, to settle on choices and keep up their

fulfillment. Grown-ups spot an incentive in these inward systems, or

patterns, to manage them effectively through life. A specific degree of

congruity rises as they age and people over and again depend on these

mappings. Be that as it may, the Continuity hypothesis doesn't infer an

absolute absence of progress. This accepts a specific measure of progress

that will happen, especially in more seasoned people who experience life-

changing encounters (Cooper and Beehr, 2015). Or maybe, even though the
5

Continuity hypothesis stresses steadiness, it contends for a powerful

procedure and ought not to be viewed as fundamentally unrelated to change.

Coherence suggests that specific examples or tenacious topics will show up

crosswise over time, however, those slight changes are normal.

The majority of retirees are interested to finish undefined activities

from before retirement. Atchley remarked that there is an inside weight

towards congruity since a necessity for sufficiency is said to be determinedly

secured in the individual (Wang, 2007).

As underscored by Wahl and Heyl (2004), that the hypothesis doesn't

propose the unchanging nature or homogeneity between moderately aged

and older individuals, but instead intelligibility and consistency in

individuals' structures and conduct.

Right now, this is one of the most valuable hypothetical develops for

clarifying the change from work to retirement. This hypothesis ends an

actual existence course viewpoint in which the retirement procedure is

molded by history, culture, and social builds. This is viewed as dynamic and

transformative formative procedures wherein people develop, adjust, and

change; be that as it may, these progressions are reliable with the

individual's fundamental belief system and past encounters.

6

Role Theory, related to an actual existence course point of view, gives

one of the most normally utilized clarifications of acclimations to retirement.

Be that as it may, the role hypothesis fits a few life-course-related

definitions. From the role improvement point of view, people who resign

from their occupations are powerless against the sentiment of role

misfortune, which can prompt mental misery. This vantage point proposes

that business is key to one's character: loss of basically significant work job

and the natural loss of going with retirement produce a related decrease in

confidence and an expansion in burdensome manifestations. On the other

hand, retirement from the requests of one's essential vocation employment

might be a significant life-course role.

As indicated by Role Theory, retirement is a modification of one's

vital job more often than not as a paid specialist, a job that is fundamental to

an individual's character (Kim and Moen, 2001). The job gives individuals a

feeling of worth and accomplishment and helps shape conduct and self-idea.

Further, the job hypothesis proposes that retirement can be a distressing

occasion for people because of the loss of crucial social jobs. Figuring out

how to manage job misfortune may make people feel a feeling of

defenselessness. For example, some resigned people may encounter

sentiments of separate and uneasiness that may prompt low degrees of life
7

fulfillment during retirement. This job is lost, and, normally, individuals will

look for substitutes for this misfortune. (Bogaard, et al., 2012).

This theory considers retirement as an occasion throughout the life

expectancy of an individual and is affected by one's close to home history,

statistic highlights, wellbeing, monetary status, aptitudes and capacities

(Moen and Kim, 2002), just as the manners in which individuals used to

achieve the change.

The family has an incredible job in the progress of a resigned

individual about maturing and improvement change of one's character. The

job of the retirees mirrors the convergence of social and authentic elements

with individual life story and improvement inside which the investigation of

family life and social change can follow.

Interestingly, as expressed by Bengston and Allen (1993), the job

hypothesis explains the significance of time, setting, procedure, and

importance on human improvement and family life. The family is seen as a

miniaturized scale social gathering inside the large scale social setting.

The idea of a family originates from an ideological need or need to

duplicate, to create a network, or at any rate from the way of life which

manages what a "family" signifies to them, especially. Job hypothesis,

however, depends on the crossing point of these social variables of impact

8

with the recorded factor of traveling through time, combined against self-

awareness as an individual and the extraordinary occasions that caused that

development.

Life fulfillment of resigned sailors relies upon the degree of everyday

costs paying little mind to the instructive foundation or length of ocean life.

Third, the degree of resigned life costs of shore-based, advanced education

foundation or short ocean life sailors is higher than the ocean-based, lower

instruction foundation or long ocean life sailors. Forward, the way of life of

resigned sailors is remaining at home paying little heed to their desires

during the profession time frame. At long last, extraordinary sailors'

government managed savings are required and instruction to the ex-sailors

will enable re-to to enter for ocean life (Kim, 2011).

The Lifestyle of an individual may shift as indicated by the impact

made by peers, associates, companions, and family. A Life change can be

unsurprising or flighty, how one proceeds with life and how an individual

lives after retirement. As expressed by Henkenset.et al., (2012), retirement is

an occasion in life that frequently realizes extraordinary changes in an

individual's close to home and public activity. Retirement is a brilliant time

in a worker's life when the representative can stop working and accomplish
9

every one of those things that they generally dream to do however never

done because of the absence of time (Saeed and Sarwar, 2016).

Each individual has the opportunity to fabricate their social escort,

which may incorporate family, companions, experts, coaches, and other

significant people throughout their life. The communication between these

connections might be overwhelmingly or solely up close and personal or

individual and online because of modernization. Economic wellbeing might

be improved as an individual decreases its consideration, these may allude to

retirees finishing their activity. (Scudellari, 2016), dynamic public activity

has been appeared to lessen an individual's danger of death by at any rate of

50 percent. The great social way of life and strong connections are basic to

each individual particularly to physical wellbeing since it drags out life.

Little (1970), social disengagement is proportional to the impacts of getting

no activity. It is outstanding that being socially associated advances an

individual's generally and mental wellbeing. It is said to be that retirees are

progressively touchy in their physicality due to maturing; sun presentation is

connected to skin malignant growth. This is the most widely recognized kind

of malignant growth in the United States. It is ideal to restrain the time spent

in the sun (Staff, 2017).

10

Because of mental, natural or social changes identified with maturing

and expanded predominance of grimness, the more seasoned individual is at

a more danger of creating medical issues as an outcome of unreasonable

liquor utilization (Zins.et al., 2011). Physical action, diet, body structure,

liquor admission, smoking, and social relations were the primary segments

of a way of life researched. The examinations show that these components

impact the view of the personal satisfaction of the old. Retirement is related

to a few between related changes and openings which can have a positive or

negative effect on physical action conduct. The impact of these components

doesn't have all the earmarks of being static and may change after some

time. Various transitional stages might be experienced in the wake of

leaving work and each stage may differentially affect physical action

conduct (McDonald.et al., 2015).

Notwithstanding these components, socio-statistic attributes, useful

limit, rest quality, and co morbidities are likewise factors that impact the

personal satisfaction of the old (Ferreira, 2018).

The possibility that smoking quiets one's nerves and diminishes

uneasiness overruns a culture. Be that as it may, it might not be right.

Similarly, that drinking liquor (a depressant) builds sentiments of

discouragement; smoking cigarettes may expand the sentiment of

11

nervousness (Grogan, 2014). The outcomes additionally uncovered that

individuals who resigned automatically would in general drink more liquor

than non-resigned representatives, while the individuals who quit working

intentionally didn't change the sum they drank. (Nierenberg, 2013), the

investigation took a gander at how retirement influenced four-way of life

changes-smoking, drinking, eating and working out (Nierenberg, 2013). The

discoveries demonstrated that retirement is related to both positive and

negative changes in way of life. Be that as it may, to comprehend its

wellbeing sway, it's critical to concentrate on the individual circumstance

and setting of every retiree, Zantinge said (Nierenberg, 2013).

The personal lifestyle of a retired person may include economic

planning, health condition, social engagement and personal stability (Aron &

Aron, 2000).

Social financial aspects research offers another viewpoint on the

inspirations hidden the retirement choice and may help produce

methodologies for defeating some intellectual and enthusiastic components

that can lead people to settle on imperfect retirement choices. In this manner,

it is critical that, notwithstanding the money related and wellbeing parts of

the retirement choice, policymakers and those in the situation to manage the
12

decisions of future retirees comprehend the conceivable conduct and mental

highlights of the retirement choice (Knoll, 2011).

An individual way of life thinks about the person's mentalities,

lifestyle, values or potentially world view. The retirement time frame is

acclimation to one's character so with the status of the family living. Many

changes would come and need some alteration. As indicated by Bogaard, et

al., (2011), the impacts of retirement on Social Activities and Relationships

with Friends and Family, results demonstrated that following the retirement,

individuals don't expand the number of contacts with youngsters, guardians,

and companions. In any case, they do seem to change the idea of certain

connections by giving progressively instrumental help. Besides, retirees

appear to begin investing more energy volunteering after retirement and

increment authoritative participation. Albeit older individuals speak to an

especially helpless gathering, their drawbacks are related to social as

opposed to characteristic causes (Drożdżak and Turek, 2016). One of the

most helpful senior social exercises is strolling with companions. In addition

to the fact that you get the opportunity to visit with other individuals your

age, however, you additionally can fortify your body and improve your

psychological frame of mind (Altura, 2017).

13

Social connectedness is an immense supporter of positive wellbeing.

Filling that hole in an individual's public activity after they leave work just

because is vital. In an investigation directed by Alvarenga, et al., (2009), on

The Impact of Retirement on the Quality of Life of the Elderly expressed

that the adjustment in conditions, discharging of schedules and accessibility

of nourishment are factors that show up firmly identified with the

adjustments in dietary patterns and body weight. Consequently, retirement is

a period set apart by changes in social, passionate and dietary parts of life for

the old, with either positive or negative impacts. Another survey investigated

how individuals change their way of life propensities when they quit

working and found that the individual circumstance of the retiree

extraordinarily impacts whether somebody turns out to be pretty much sound

(Nierenberg, 2013).

As indicated by Haslam, et al., (2018), on their investigation on The

Importance of Social Groups for Retirement Adjustment: Evidence,

Application and Policy Implications of the Social Identity Model of Identity

Change this proposes the acclimation to retirement is upgraded to the degree

that retirees can get to numerous significant gathering enrollments and the

mental assets they give, keep up positive and esteemed existing gatherings

and create important new gatherings furnishing they are good with each
14

other. (Moon, 2009), the privilege of the individual is to take an interest in a

profoundly social action that includes socially made dialects and the

utilization of network assets.

Distinguish four key exercises that address the significance of

overseeing social gathering assets successfully during the change to

retirement from the workforce. These recommend that acclimation to

retirement is improved to the degree that retirees: Can get to various

significant gathering enrollments and the mental assets they give, keep up

positive and esteemed existing gatherings, and create important new

gatherings, giving they are good each other. This hypothesis and exact proof

are utilized to present another social mediation, bunches four well beings

that interprets SIMIC'S exercises into training Haslam, et al., (2018). Social

exercises keep us sharp and rationally connected with, and this is essential to

anticipate the beginning of dementia or Alzheimer's infection (Silver

Maples, 2017). They have to discover approaches to keep up or structure

new social associations with abstaining from getting to be confined

(Brandon, 2017).

In the investigation led by Wang, et.al., on Finding Meaning During

the Retirement Process: Identity Development in Later Career Years that

retirement is a recursive procedure of aims, activities, and results, through

15

which new practices sum up contribution in new jobs, and new sub-

characters related with retirement (Hall, 2002). Factors in the individual

(self-examinations and mutable profession direction) and social elements

(formative systems and reference gatherings) impact the character and

objective setting process, making the individual both the specialist and the

objective of the change procedure that is retirement. In this manner, the need

to act naturally tied down during retirement enables individuals to discover

individual significance in manners that progression outside of their past

working lives. Retirement arranging incorporates recognizing wellsprings of

salary, evaluating costs Kagan (2019).

People consider and plan for retirement. They use money related

arranging administrations (Elder, 1999). The greater part of some inquiry is

something identified with budgetary arranging, which is a result of getting

ready for retirement which is one of the serious issues of retirees. Probably

the greatest changes in your spending will happen when you initially resign.

You'll never again have an unfaltering check from your boss except if you

get benefits. You'll require an arrangement for dealing with your pay during

retirement, and you'll have to choose when to begin asserting Social Security

benefits (Fontinelle, 2019). Indeed, even as the marine business gives

extraordinary compared to other remuneration for its laborers, the greater

16

part or above 50 percent of Filipino sailors don't carry on with a decent or

agreeable life or even wound up broke after retirement in light of the

absence of vocation arranging (Depasupil, 2018).

Since retirees live more, there is more enthusiasm for the nature of

retirement life. Previously, most readiness for retirement transformed into

monetary arranging. The accentuation on budgetary arranging is mostly

because numerous retirement introductions and workshops are given by

monetary establishments (Osborne, 2012).

Resource distribution includes partitioning a speculation portfolio

among various resource classes, for example, stock, bonds, and money

(Beginners' Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing,

2018). It has never been simpler to oversee cash, on account of the

developing number of individual planning applications for cell phones that

put the everyday funds in the palm of one's hand Kenton (2019). Monetary

education likewise includes the capability of budgetary standards and ideas,

for example, budgetary arranging, accumulated dividends, overseeing

obligation, productive investment funds systems and the time estimation of

cash (Kenton, 2019).

Resigning seafarers have just tasted easy street and earned well. So

what they need upon retirement is the learning that would give them the
17

instrument on the best way to maintain a business with a decent return of

venture (Depasupil, 2018).

The absence of money related education may prompt settling on poor

budgetary decisions that can have negative results on the monetary

prosperity of an individual (Kenton 2019).

Money related proficiency assists people with getting to be

independent so they can accomplish budgetary solidness (Kenton 2019).

Families not just need to spare a great deal for a long time, however, they

likewise need to deal with their possessions carefully to develop enough

resources to guarantee an agreeable retirement, particularly to take into

consideration end-of-life care (Baily and Harris, 2018).

Sadly, numerous family units of retirement age, even those with no

annuity salary, have exceptionally low degrees of budgetary resources and

are subsequently dependent on Social Security and are constrained to work

past the age at which they planned to resign (Baily and Harris, 2018).
