PROJECT BRIEF

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN, KURUKSHETRA

The project under consideration is to be executed in phased manner consuming all FSI. The
master plan should include provision for the future phases / expansion. However, the first
phase shall be executed initially for which the brief is as under :

• The project objective is to establish an institution for undergraduate and post graduate
design education in industrial design, communication design, interaction design and
textile-apparel-lifestyle design with an inter-disciplinary focus
• Focus area / Utilization of each campus is as under :.

∗ Jorhat, Assam - Craft, Communication and Textile design

∗ Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh - Product, Furniture and Textile design
∗ Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh - IT integrated design
∗ Kurukshetra, Haryana - Automobile and Transportation design

• The undergraduate programme would be of 4 years duration and would also have an
annual intake of about 75 students and the post graduate programme would have
annual intake of 75 students and be of duration of 2.5 years.

• Institution would be committed to providing world class design education with

innovation in design curricula in different specialisations and development of
appropriate, modern, culturally relevant design pedagogies, thus offering a model to be
replicated across the country.

• An academic in institution is a dynamic place which grows and change with time. This
calls for provisions for expansion of its facilities and potential flexibility. It also demands
for provision of expansion of individual activity as much as for the institution as a
whole. With constant change in technology and teaching tools, the spaces need to have
flexibility in their use. It should be possible to join smaller spaces for make a larger one
and vice versa. And in order to accommodate expansion of respective functions, plan
with open ended system should be developed. Initially the requirements are being set
on for a student population of 450-500 and corresponding faculty and support service
staff.

• Local and regional traditions in buildings systems from which interferences can be
drawn. This would include plan forms, climatic responses, building materials and
technologies. This would not be a mere stylistic representation of traditional forms and
motifs.
• Energy conservation should be built into the system. Explore and exploit natural light to
the optimum. It is desirable and possible that all the spaces have sufficient working
natural light available.
