PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION: THE BASICS
Whether you are small-town bakery, an eBay seller or a heavy machinery
manufacturer, at some point during the course of your business, you will have to
transport your merchandise. Choosing the right mode of transport means achieving
a balance between time and budget constraints. Obtaining the wrong balance, and
you will face a set of deeply impressed customers.
Choice of mode of transport:
What to consider when you are choosing the best way to transport your products,
the budget should be the most important factor in your decision making.
• The speed of transport is also important - if you have perishable items, sending
them on a three-month sea voyage through Africa is a bad idea.
• If your products are expensive or you are shipping your product by sea, may
consider some for insurance. This will come in the form of goods in transit or
maritime insurance, and is paid by the buyer or seller, depending on what the
trading conditions are. If you think insurance is necessary, make sure you have
agreed to the terms with your provider or customer to avoid confusion.
• If your cargo is valuable, it may be necessary to use a vehicle tracking system, so
you know exactly where it is.
• While damage during transit is quite common, it is generally the supplier's
responsibility to ensure that the cargoes are properly packaged and labeled by
reducing the risk.
Transport modes
Choosing the right mode of transport for your products depends on the size and
urgency of your shipment.

• Due to the nature of courier vehicles, they usually only deliver goods up to a
certain weight.
• couriers are generally only profitable over short distances.
