Abstract

This paper represents a study about the use of sap of pseudostem of banana

plant as a fertilizer to mustard. An initial selection has been made and led to the

identification of different setups regarding the growth of mustard. Several setups of

mustards with different fertilizers and absence and presence of sunlight are

experimented in order to determine the difference between each of them and to easily

tell the significance of this research study. The purpose of this study is to determine

whether the use of banana sap as fertilizer will gain better results than using

commercial fertilizer, sometimes none in growing mustard. The study was carried out in

the researcher's home and yielded results every week which was noted for the

presentation of datas in the chapter four of this research study. Variables identified are

the mustard, fertilizers, and weather condition. After the gathering of data, it was

presented in a tabular form and was discussed for better understanding of results. The

findings of this study shows that the use of banana sap as a fertilizer executed better

results in the growth of mustard. It showed faster growth in shorter span of time instead

of the mustard which used commercial fertilizer and the mustard without fertilizer at all.

Thus, results of the study is helpful to those researchers who does the same study and

to farmers for better growth of mustard and reduction of fertilizer cost, and also to the

market. Suggestions and recommendations are presented at the end of this study.

Rationale of the Research

This study wants to observe the growth of the plant because without the

presence of the fertilizer, the mustard cannot grow and thrive because it needs a

number of different chemical elements. The mustard takes 90 - 100 days to reach

harvest, and the pseudostem of a banana plant is a big help to decrease the number of

days needed for it to grow.

Purpose of the Research

Purpose of the Research The purpose of this research paper is to investigate and

describe the helpfulness of the pseudostem’s extract of a banana plant in the growth of

mustard. The study aim to answer the following:

1.) Determine the difference of using chemical fertilizer and the fertilizer made from

banana extract.

2.) Analyze the importance of using fertilizer out of the extract of pseudostem of a

banana plant.

3.) Determine the effectiveness of the pseudostem of banana plant extract in

decreasing the number of days it will take to reach harvest.

Literature Survey

Banana

The bananas are thought to be predominantly sensitive to modifications in the

environment. The banana is subtle to soil water deficits, and expanding tissues such as

emerging leaves and growing fruit are among the first to be affected. Stomata close and

leaves remain highly hydrated, probably through root pressure as the soil begins to dry,

stomata close and leaves remain highly hydrated, probably through root pressure.

Productivity is affected because of the early closure of stomata.

According to Turner, the common belief that bananas use large amounts of water

does not have a strong physiological basis. Improvements in water-use efficiency in

irrigated plantations could come from a closer match between plant water use and the

amount of water applied. The banana is day neutral for floral induction, but photoperiods

of less than 12 h are associated with a slowing in the rate of bunch initiation that is

independent of temperature expressed as growing degree days. This may contribute to

seasonal variations in banana flowering, even in more tropical environments with

moderate temperatures.

Classification of banana

The banana plant belongs to Musaceae family. This family has two genera, Musa

and Ensete. The earliest classification of bananas was made by Linnaeus in 1783 when

he named all dessert bananas Musa sapientium which are sweet when ripe and are

plantain group which are cooked and consumed while starchy.

Organic Farming

Organic farming is the best option for the enhancement of soil health quality and

it also improve the nutritional status of crops. Some of the liquid organic manures like

banana pseudostem sap, panchagavya, cow urine also known to improve the yield and

quality of crops. Review of literature related to effect of liquid organic manures on yield,

quality and nutrient uptake by onion and other crops as well as on soil properties are

presented (Bokare, 2013).

The liquid organic manures contains small amount of nutrients and growth

boosters. When it applied to the crops it removes the imbalances in terms of physical,

chemical and physiological aspects and harmonizes the basic element which revitalizes

the growth process (Natarajan, 2008). Numbers of experiments were conducted at

different places of India to study the effect of liquid organic manures on growth and

quality of crops.

Pseudostem of banana plant as a fertilizer

Salunkhe (2010) conducted the field experiment, to study the feasibility of using

banana pseudostem sap as a liquid fertilizer under drip irrigation at NAU, Navsari. The

result revealed that the application of banana psuedostem sap @ 2000 l/ha through

An experiment on evaluation of banana pseudostem sap as liquid fertilizer

through drip irrigation in Banana was conducted at Soil and Water Management

Research Unit at NAU, Navsari. The result revealed that the higher fruit yield was

recorded in the treatment, application of three litrepseudostem sap per plant + 80 % of

RDF. It was at par with the treatment, application of 4 litrepseudostem sap + 80 % RDF

and 4 litrepseudostem sap + 100 % RDF. Treatment, 4 litrepseudostem sap + 100%

RDF recorded significantly more number of fingers per bunch then the remaining

treatments.

Nitrogen is the chief promoter of growth. It induces the vegetative growth of the

pseudostem and leaves providing them the desired healthy green color. A broad attempt

was made to evaluate the feasibility application of banana pseudostem sap as liquid

fertilizer to soil application in increasing yield of amaranths and spinach, made to

attempt increase soil fertility level and reduce the soil pollution. Comprehensive banana

pseudostem sap and fertilizer application on yield and nutrient uptake by amaranths and

spinach for manipulation soil health and sustainable agriculture.

Sugar

Sugar, according to the present invention, is selected from carbohydrates or

saccharides in general, including monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides,

polysaccharides; or mixture thereof. According to Ushijima & Silva, invention generally

concerns a concentrated sugar additive comprising (a) raffinate derived from citric acid

recovery industry and (b) sugar-containing solution useful for controlling dust emission

from particulate materials during manufacturing, handling, storage or transportation.

Such particulate materials comprise fertilizers or mining products.

Fertilizer dust dissemination poses safety, health, environmental, housekeeping

and maintenance problems for the producers, distributors and consumers. For instance

fertilizer dust has raised health concerns due to human and animal inhalation thereof. It

is also a concern when fertilizer dust becomes airborne what can lead to the loss of

agronomic and economic value, while potentially contributing to the contamination of

surface water ecosystems (Ushijima & Silva, 2014).

Sugar as an additive to banana fertilizer

Sugar E-Boost is a natural liquid that provides energy to speed beneficial

bacterial activity in the soil and for plants. Effective for foliar and soil applications, Sugar

E-Boost can be applied at planting, as a side-dress or transplant, foliar fed, or fertigated.

Use of Sugar E-Boost aids in the development of stronger, healthier plants and can

contribute to increased yields. When used with fertilizers and/or herbicides, Sugar E-

Boost helps ensure plant nutrients are made available to growing crops (Soil Service,

Inc.).

Using chemical fertilizer on mustard

Chemical fertilizers have contributed significantly toward the pollution of water, air

and soil. Therefore, the current trend is to explore the possibility of supplementing

chemical fertilizers with organic ones that are eco-friendly and cost effective. Biologic

nitrogen fixation by living nitrogen fixers will help to minimize the amounts of N fertilizer

to be added, improve plant growth and decrease the production cost and environmental

risk (Aly et al., 1999; El-Hawary et al., 1998). Bacterial fertilization provided for

nonlegume crops by nitrogen fixing bacteria has shown great importance in recent

years. The effect of inoculation has a remarkable influence on the growth of plants to

increase yield. This increase might be due to the effect of nitrogen produced by bacterial

species, which, in addition to some growth regulators, can stimulate crop growth.

Mustard

Mustard plants are any of several plant species in the genera Brassica and

Sinapis in the family Brassicaceae. Mustard seed is used as a spice. Grinding and

mixing the seeds with water, vinegar, or other liquids, creates the yellow condiment

known as prepared mustard. The seeds can also be pressed to make mustard oil, and

the edible leaves can be eaten as mustard greens.

Health benefits of mustard include relief from muscular pains, psoriasis,

ringworm, contact dermatitis and respiratory disorders. Since earlier times, different

The table shows the third week of the monitoring of the growth of mustard. The height of

the mustards without sunlight is particularly lesser than those exposed to sunlight. In

this case, the one with the fastest growth and highest measure of stem is still the

mustard with the sap of pseudostem of banana as fertilizer with exposure to sunlight

which is 2.1 inches, and the lowest is still the mustard without fertilizer and sunlight

which is 0.6 inches. The color of all the mustard planted this week is green.

Conclusions and Recommendations

An experiment entitiled ““The Effectiveness of Pseudostem of Banana Plant

Extract (Musa cavendish) as a Fertilizer to Mustard” was conducted at Macunat’s

residence.

Conclusions

The researchers conclude that pseudostem of banana plant extract is a major

factor for the mustard to decrease its number of days to harvest. As the researchers

conducted the study, the researchers found out that there is an element in the

pseudostem of banana plant extract that help the mustard to grow faster. Pseudostem

of banana plant has a lot of nitrogen the reason why the growth of mustard is increasing

also it can maintain the mustard to maintain its green color. The researchers also

conclude that sugar can help the growth of mustard in terms of controlling dust.

Recommendations

The researchers recommended to use the pseudostem of banana plant extract

as a fertilizer to rather than commercialized products. It will help the mustard to lessen

their budget instead of buying expensive commercial ones. It will also help the

environment for it has no chemical or toxic substance in it. The researchers also

recommend using other plants with proteins that will help the mustard to grow faster that

it is expected to be and also the researchers recommend using the Pseudostem of

Banana Plant Extract to other kinds of plants that is needed to grow.
