Delivering the ministerial address, Mr. Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and

Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister of State (I/C) for Power, Coal, New and
Renewable Energy and Mines, Government of India, said that this
Forum is a key platform to engage with Japan for mutual benefit in
the energy sector by working towards bringing Japanese strengths in
cutting edge engineering and technology to India. Highlighting the
price sensitive market of India, he mentioned that the country cannot
afford costly power and hence need Japanese cooperation in
maintaining a balance between renewable energy and conventional
coal based power.

Energy Storage India held on Jan 2017

The 4th edition of Energy Storage India International Conference and


Expo on Energy Storage and Microgrids with over 250 delegates and
1000+ visitors was held at the Nehru Convention Centre in Mumbai,
organized by Customized Energy Solutions and Messe Dusseldorf
India, powered by India Energy Storage Alliance. The event was
supported by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), US
Commercial Services and IIT Bombay. Honorable Railway Minister,
Shri Suresh Prabhu graced the event digitally as the key note
speaker. The focus of ESI 2017 was “Moving from Vision to National
Energy Storage Mission”.
The conference saw various announcements in the industry, notably
Mr. John Zahurancik, President – AES Energy Storage highlighting a
joint partnership agreement between AES and Mitsubishi
Corporation to deliver India's First Grid-Scale Energy Storage Array
(10MW) to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited; IESA and UL jointly inviting nominations from the industry for IESA-UL energy storage
standards taskforce to formulize India-based standards on energy storage modules and packs.
IESA announced its first Industrial Awards for 2016-17 at the conference. “Energy Storage Project of the Year” was awarded to PGCIL for
their Puducherry project.

Smart Grid Updates: Policy, Regulations & Standards
CEA Released Draft National Electricity Plan for 2017-2022
The Draft National Electricity Plan (Vol-I: Generation & Vol-II: Transmission) has been prepared by CEA. The Draft covers a review of the
12th five year Plan, Plan for 2017-2022 along with details for RE integration and a perspective for the period beyond 2022. While
preparing the NEP, tentative demands for 2021-20122, as part of working of 19th EPS have been taken into consideration. Central
Electricity Authority (CEA) has estimated an investment of Rs.2.6 trillion (~$38.2 billion) in the Indian power transmission sector by the
end of 2022. These and other estimates form the base for a draft National Electricity Plan-Volume II, which would be the basis for
investment and policy planning in the sector. Inter-regional capacity addition during the 13th plan (2017-22) is estimated at 45.7 GW.

Cabinet Approved International Solar Alliance (ISA): Signing of the Framework Agreement
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has given its ex-post facto approval to the proposal of Ministry of
New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) for ratification of ISA’s Framework Agreement by India. ISA was launched jointly by the Prime
Minister of India and the President of France on 30th November, 2015 at Paris on the side-lines of the 21st CoP meeting of the United

Gujarat Government to Unveil New Integrated Solar-Wind Hybrid Policy
Considering the advantages of integrated solar and wind power projects, the Gujarat state government has decided to announce a new
policy for such hybrid plants. It will be called Solar-Wind Hybrid Policy 2017. The government intends to invite suggestions from
interested companies and other stakeholders for the proposed policy within a month. “The decision of the new policy for solar and
wind hybrid projects has been taken by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as the concept of such hybrid power plants has been gaining
momentum off late across the country,” said an official statement from the government. The government intends to invite suggestions

J&K State Electricity Regulatory Commission Issued Mini Grid Renewable Energy Generation and Supply Regulations
J&K State Electricity Regulatory Commission issued Mini Grid Renewable Energy Generation and Supply Regulations which shall apply
to both new and existing Mini Grid Projects for generation and supply of electricity to consumers and/or sale to the Distribution
Licensee in the Mini Grid Areas in the State of Jammu & Kashmir. The existing Mini Grid Projects shall ensure the compliance of these
Regulations and shall meet the Technical Standards and Safety measures as per these Regulations within six months of notification of
these Regulations. The Mini Grid Projects with an installed capacity up to 500 kW shall be governed by these Regulations. The Mini Grid
Operator shall be entitled to supply entire quantum of electricity generated from the Mini-Grid Project to the consumers through the
Project Distribution Network at mutually agreed tariff or tariff for the Mini-Grid Projects with the subsidy as may be approved by the
State Govt.

Spectrum Allocation for Smart Grid Applications in Europe
European Parliament reached a political agreement for the use of the ultra-high frequency band of 700 MHz for mobile services. TV
broadcasting services, currently the main users of the 700 MHz band, will be moved out of it but will retain priority in the sub-700 MHz
band ”until at least 2030.” Releasing the 700MHz band for internet use and the shift to 5G could help to enable cross-border internet of

FPL builds new control centre, touts benefits of Smart Grids
Florida Power and Light (FPL) started a new distribution control centre in West Palm Beach, designed to ensure greater everyday reliability
and efficient communication, collaboration and response during emergency restoration events. The facility is an expansion of FPL's
command centre and will consolidate the firm's two existing control facilities in Miami's and Sarasota. The new control centre will use

Donald Trump to eliminate Obama's Climate Action Plan


Shortly after US President Donald Trump was sworn into office, the new updated website of White House said the new administration will
eliminate the Climate Action Plan, the centrepiece of former President Barack Obama's climate legacy that aims to cut carbon emissions
from power plants. Trump has called the climate change a “hoax” and has threatened to pull US out of the Paris Agreement that took
effect last year. President Trump is committed to eliminating harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Pan and the

SolarWindow to develop electricity generating flexible glass


SolarWindow technologies, a developer of transparent electricity generating coatings for glass window and flexible veneers, announced
plans to develop electricity generating flexible glass. SolarWindow scientists and engineers recently applied layers of company's liquid
coatings to Corning Window Glass and laminated them under conditions that simulate high pressure and temperature of the
manufacturing processes used by commercial glass and window producers. The outcome for the process is a bendable glass, as thin as a

China to quadruple new energy vehicle production by 2020


China will quadruple its new energy vehicle annual output to 2 million by 2020. Citing a government plan the Industry and Information
Technology minister Miao Wei said at a Beijing forum that by 2025, at least one in every 5 cars sold in China will be a new energy model.
Xinhua news energy reported. The new energy vehicles include battery electric cars and plug-in hybrids, fuel-cell cars. In terms of charging
infrastructure China has built over 100,000 public charging poles in 2016, ten times the figure in 2015. China has witnessed a boom in EV

TATA Power's renewable energy capacity crosses 3000 MW


As per TATA Power, its total generation capacity from renewable energy sources has reached 3060 MW till date in the current fiscal. The
company's non-fossil fuel portfolio comprises 693 MW of hydro, 918MW of Solar, 1074 MW of wind and 375 MW of waste gas based
generation. In the last fiscal, TATA Power Renewable Energy (TPREL) completed the acquisition of Welspun Renewable Energy Private
Limited (WREPL) to become the largest renewable energy company in India. TATA Power has RE projects in states such as Maharashtra,
Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and is currently in the process of implementing nearly 500 MW of renewable energy projects at

Pacific and African Nations Get $44M in Microgrids and Renewables Funding
Four renewable energy projects in developing countries in the Pacific and Africa are to receive $44.5 million of funding. The money will
come from a project facility set up by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and the International Renewable Energy Agency
(IRENA). The projects involve a hybrid microgrid project utilizing solar PV and advanced lithium-ion batteries, a hydropower scheme, the
integration of a solar plant with a wind farm, and a combination project consisting of microgrid and solar home kits. The announcement of
the funding was made in Abu Dhabi at the Seventh Session of the IRENA Assembly. IRENA director-general Adnan Amin said the project
financing facility was “putting in place an innovative process which supports transformational and replicable projects that can potentially

Suntech achieves new milestone in Multicrystalline Solar cell technology

Suntech announced that its highest mass production conversion efficiency of multicrystalline silicon solar cell has reached 20 percent. In
April 2015 its high efficiency mono crystalline solar module “HyPro” module was launched to the market and on June 2016, the highest
cell conversion efficiency reached 21.3 percent. According to the average conversion efficiency of the mass production of multicrystalline
silicon PERC solar cells, 72 cells module will reach 330 W, which is 15 W higher than the normal 315 W module. Read more at

FTC and Carino introduce green, grid-free EV charging stations


The Franklin Thomas company (FTC) and Carino Energy Renewables (Carino) announced today that they would provide unique StarPower
fast charging stations for electric vehicles. FTC's CEO Joe Shepard's recently patented split rotor generator that can power the new
CHAdeMO/Level 3 charging stations. The new charging stations combine FTC's new 70kW split rotor generator and 120 hp natural gas
engine. The system provides 'green', grid-free, rapid charging stations virtually everywhere with 500 V DC at 125 Amperes. Read more at
