Discussion:

This paper’s intention is to recognize the critical factors that affects the academic

performance of the students greatly. It will concentrate exactly on the factors and its

positive and negative outcome to the students. The factors will be classified and discussed

to this paper.

The factors that affects the academic performances of the students

There are a lot of factors that can affect the students’ academic performances in

different levels depending on the students’ capability to handle the situations. According

to Irfan Mushtaq and Shabana Nawaz Khan’s (2012), students’ performance are affected

by psychological, economical, environmental and personal factors. According to Scott

Ragin (2019), there are 10 factors that affects the students’ academic performances.

First is the students should have physical activities. In Scott’s research, it shows

that exercises can affect the academic performance of the students. Second is the learning

facilities. The students should have equipments that they need that will allow them to get

a new idea. Third factor is the interest, according to Scott interest is important to make a

subject enjoyable. Everyone can be a better learner if they are interested to the subject.

Fourth factor is guidance, Scott said that if the students are properly helped and guided by

their parents and teachers, they will perform well in the school. Basically, they will obtain

more practical knowledge and tips from their parents and teachers that will make things

easy for them to handle. Fifth is motivation, the students’ lack of motivation is the reason

for low grades lack of motivation. Sixth factor is job, Scott said that mostly of the students

are working students and these students balance work and studies. These students usually

work for pocket money for daily expenses. Seventh factor is sleep, according to Scott, lack

of sleep is a big effect to health and productivity. Students that lacks in sleep usually have

can’t focus on study. Sleep is one of the important things that a person should have. Eighth

factor is communication, it is needed especially between the educator and the student to

know each other’s weak and strong point. Last is distractions, there are a lot of distractions

that a student can encounter. There mobile phones, television, social media and many more.

The students that can’t stop using their mobile phones during at night are more sleepier

during the day and class and that causes the students to be distracted.

What are the positive and negative outcomes of the factors to a student?

The given factors do not only have negative result; it also has its positive result to

the students. Also, a student can make their own decisions that they can take a lesson upon

doing it. The students, specially the high school and college students already know what

they should do and what they should not do for their own good. As for the kids, they have

their guardians to remind them what’s wrong and what’s right.

For example, sleep and distractions these factors are two of the factors that Scott

Ragin gave in his research. When a student chose to stay awake at midnight just to browse

its social media, that student will obviously feel sleepy the next day in class and can’t focus

to the lesson. The negative result of this is that the student won’t be able to cope up with

the lesson and will have the possibility to fail or get a low grade to the subject. Camille

Peri said that sleep affects the critical thinking and learning. Lack of sleep affects the

attention and concentration of a person. But the positive result of the student’s action is

that the student will give more effort and time to pass the subject and will not do the same

thing again that caused the low grade. Next is guidance and interest, when a student lacks

in guidance the student will most likely lose their focus to their studies. According to

Himanee Chaudhary (2018), guidance is the process in which person able to know their

ability, interest, a capacity that will help in the encounter of problems faced by them.

Guidance is the process of a dynamic interpersonal relationship that is prepared to influence

the person’s attitude and follow-up behavior. Counseling is the sharing of thoughts,

reciprocal logic and guidance between groups or two. Himanee Chaudhary said that

according to J. E. Smith, counselling is the process in counselor has a broad discussion

related to student’s interest, planning, and adjustment. The possible positive result of this

is that the student will learn to be independent and learn to choose the decision that will

help the student grow.

Plan of Action or Possible Solutions:

For the students, according to Joanna Hughes (2015), there are 8 ways to avoid

study distractions. First is that the student must get comfortable. Hughes said that comfort

and studying are equal because if they are comfortable they will be able to focus on their

task. Second is that the student should have silence. Having a quiet surrounding will help

the students to focus more on their work. Third is that the student must develop a routine.

The students should only set aside a time for school. The student must list down their task

and monitor the record of their progress. Making it as a habit will help the students to be

responsible and mindful to their priorities. Fourth is that the student should set goals and

targets. It is important to set their goals and target to be organized. Fifth is the student

should tackle the tough stuffs. According to Hughes, the students must prioritize the hard

tasks and put them where they are prepared so they take them at their very best. Sixth is

the students must avoid using electronics devices while studying. Internet is the number

one enemy of a student while studying because a minute of browsing the social media can

turn into hours. Also, study time can be completed even if it’s internet free. Seventh is that

the student should eat well. According to Hughes, eating the right foods can help not only

the students but everyone to prevent from being stressed and have the power to finish hard

periods. It is also good for the health of the person. Lastly, the student should take atleast

a short break in studying. Students should take a study break to be refreshed and to have

the concentration that they need. Also, Hughes said that according to the research, physical

activities have an effect on the students’ performance.

Conclusion:

There are a lot of factors that affect the academic performance of a student. That

factors do not only have a negative result but it also has its positive result. Upon reading

this paper, the readers will now understand that making the right decision is the best for

themselves. Doing the suggested solutions above, the students can prevent themselves to

be distracted in their study. This paper tackled about the factors and how it can be avoided.

This paper also proved that the parents or guardians have their parts in a student’s studies.

Students and their guardians should helped each other to make a better concentration and

education for the students.
