I. Objectives
a. EN9V-IIIa-29 identify the meaning of vocabulary words in the literary text through solving a word puzzle,
b. EN9WC-IIIa-9 visualize ones dream through creating a collage,
c. EN9VC-IIIa-1.2/2.2 relating oneself to the characteristics of the main character through depicting real life situation.

B. Reference: A journey through Anglo-American Literature Learner’s Material pp. 431-435.
C. Materials: PowerPoint presentation.

Before you take your seats, kindly pick up all the
pieces of paper and plastic wrappers under your chair and

Activity
For our today’s activity you need to guess the
missing letters of the word to solve the puzzle and to get
the vocabulary words that you will be encountered in the
text. As you get the correct answer, you will read its
synonym and meaning and then construct a sentence using
the word.

Analysis
Now that we have already identified the vocabulary
words, let’s proceed to the story itself. I will assign you to
be one of the characters and you will read there dialogues
with feelings. (The assigned students will read the selection)

If you really understand the story, when and where


did the story happen? The story happens Friday morning at the hospital.

Who are the main characters in the story? Describe


each. Ruth- the pregnant daughter of Lena.
Lena- the mother in the Younger’s family. She wants to
have their own house.
Beneatha- sister of Ruth. She wants to be a doctor.
Travis- Ruth’s son and the one who owned the house.
Walter- Lena’s son. The one who will manage the money
coming from Lena.
Plot analysis
What is the exposition part of the story?
When Lena and Beneatha visit Ruth in the hospital. As
they saw the condition of Ruth they cheer her up and
advise her to have a self-confidence for her son Travis.

How about the rising action? Ruth got depressed on her condition. She puts her
angriness to Travis. She didn’t even give Travis a chance
to express love for his mother.

Which do you think is the climax in the story? As Lena invested money for her family. She saw that Ruth
was very depressed and it affects the relationship of her to
Travis being a mother.

What is the falling action in the story? Lena divides her money for her children. She gives the
house to Travis when he is already a full-grown man. She
keeps the half of the money for Beneatha’s medical
schooling while the other half is for Walter for his own
business.

How about the resolution? Lena’s plan for her family was successfully accomplished.
She helped Beneatha to be a doctor. She helped Walter to
be a businessman and she gave the house Travis.
Abstraction
What is the greatest dream of Lena for her
family? She wants to have their own house and give it to Travis as
he will be a man soon. She also dreams to make her
daughter Beneatha to be a doctor someday. And lastly, she
wants to make Walter a good business man in the future.
If you are the daughter/son of Lena, what did you
feel after knowing that she gives her best just to pursue
your dreams? I feel very proud to my mother because she always there
to support me and help me just to catch my dreams.

Would you have dream of the same thing for your


family? Why? Yes! I will also help my family to pursue their dreams
because as I saw them happy to their success it feels like I
am successful too.

What is the theme of the story? Perseverance and overcoming challenges.

Does the conflict in the story happens in real life


situation? Yes ma’am!

Application
Find a partner and get 1 whole sheet of pad paper.
what you are going to do is to tell to your partners your
dreams in life. Your partner will write your dreams in
his/her paper and if you are done, it is the turn of your
partner to tell his/her dreams to you.
