MATH 211

FALL 2010

HW 4 (P&P) Please staple if your

solutions require more
than one page.

DUE: 12:30 PM, Thursday October 7, 2010 (no late papers will be accepted)

DIRECTIONS: Your score on each problem of this homework is based on both of the following: (1) the
accuracy of the mathematics you write down, and (2) your ability to clearly and effectively communicate the
problem’s answer. Please follow all of the relevant specifications stated in the "Submission Guidelines” section of
the syllabus; otherwise, you will not earn the maximum points possible (even for correct answers).
Please write your solutions on the back side(s) of a printout of this document or on separate pieces of paper; do not
try to present your solution to any problem on this page. Your final answer to each problem should be clear in
your write-up.

[5 pts] 1. A sample of the purchases for several Jiffy's Convenience Store customers resulted in the following
sample data:
x = number of items purchased per customer and f represents the frequency.

Address parts (a) – (e). Show work and/or explain how you arrive at each of your answers in parts
(a) – (c); otherwise, no credit will be awarded.

x f [ 1 pt ] (a) How many customers were used to form this sample?

[ 1 pt ] (b) How many items were purchased by the customers in
1 6
this sample?
2 10 [ 1 pt ] (c) What is the largest number of items purchased by
3 9 one customer?
4 8 [ 1 pt ] (d) Construct a frequency histogram for this data.
5 7 [ 1 pt ] (e) Construct a dot plot for this data.

[3 pts] 2. A study designed to determine the mean age of Western Washington male coronary patients suffered
their first heart attack was conducted last month. The sample of thirty six male coronary patients yielded
the age data (reported in whole numbers of years) shown here.

3 6, 9
4 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
5 0, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
6 0, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7
7 1, 2, 4

Address parts (a) – (c) below. Show work and/or explain how you arrive at each of your answers;
otherwise, no credit will be awarded.
[ 1 pt ] (a) What is the mode of this distribution?
[ 1 pt ] (b) Write a sentence or two describing this distribution; include a description of the shape, center,
and spread.
[ 1 pt ] (c) What is the exact proportion of these male coronary patients had their first heart attack at an
age of less than 45 years?
[12 pts] 3. Juan has 385 CDs in his collection. Juan randomly selects 5 CDs from his
collection and measures the playing times of each of the 43 songs on those
CDs. Juan chooses to record each playing time to the nearest tenth of a
minute (i.e. with one digit after the decimal point).

The histogram of the 43 songs’ playing times in Juan’s sample is symmetric

and unimodal. The song with the lowest playing time in Juan’s sample is
1 minute, 30 seconds. The values of the mean, standard deviation, range, and
IQR of the 43 songs’ playing times in Juan’s are 2.75 minutes, 0.45 minutes,
3.01 minutes, and 0.60 minutes, respectively. Address parts (a), (b), and (c).
[3 pts] (a) The sample size is n = 43 . Explain why N ≠ 385 .
[6 pts] (b) In each statement below, fill-in each blank with the approximate value. Report each value
with the appropriate number of digits after the decimal point. Use complete English
sentences to clearly explain the thought processes you use to obtain each of the values;
otherwise, no credit will be awarded.
The middle 50% of the playing times in Juan’s sample are between
___ minutes and ___ minutes.

The longest 25% playing times of songs in Juan’s sample are between
___ minutes and ___ minutes.

[3 pts] (c) Construct a boxplot for the data collected on the 43 songs in Juan’s collection.
