SPANISH COLONIALIZATION(1521-1898)
1. Leon Maria Guerrero (1876)
- Father of Philippine Pharmacy
- Because of his extensive work on the medicinal plants
of the Philippines and the uses.
2. The Manila Observatory (1865)
- A non- profit research institute housed on the campus
of Ateneo de Manila University.
- It has done weather forecasting and earthquake
research and today researches seismic and
geomagnetic phenomena as well as radio and solar
physics.
3. Fr. Federico Faura (1879)
- Who was able to issue the first public typhoon warning
- Member of The Society of Jesus,members was called
the Jesuits.
4. Colegio de Santa Potencia(1589)
• Franciscans were the founder of the school
• First school for girls who wanted to be nuns
• Established because of the urging of the then manila
bishop named Domingo de Salazar
• Located in Intramuros but was destroyed in 1645
• Was transferred to the corner of Cabildo and Sta.
Potencia, indicated in Munoz map in 1671
5. Universidad de San Ignacio(1590)
• Founded in Manila by the Jesuits for everyone
• Originally as Colegio- Seminaryo de san Ignacio
• In 1768, the Jesuits were expelled in the country and
the school dissolved and was surrendered to the
government
• The site where it was originally located is now occupied
by PLM
6.Universidad de San Carlos(1595)
• founded in Cebu by the Jesuits
• Originally Colegio de san Ildefonso
• Closed down in 1768 because of the expulsion of the
Jesuits from the Philippines but opened again in 1783
• Has a friendly rivalry with UST with who is the oldest
University
7. Colegio de San Jose(1601)
• Founded by the Jesuits
• Originally San Jose Seminary
• Named as El Real Colegio de san Jose by the King of
Spain in 1720
8. Universidad de Santo Tomas(1611)
• Named after Saint Thomas Aquinas
• It is the oldest university in Asia
• Known as the largest Catholic University in the world in
a single campus because of the its population
•Established with the initiative of Bishop Miguel de
Benavides (3rd archbishop)
• Originally Colegio de Nuestra Señora Del Santisimo
Rosario
• Originally located in Intramuros

• Owned and administered by the Friars of the order of
the Preachers (Dominicans)
• Patron Saint is St. John the Baptist
• Patroness is Our Lady of the most Holy Rosary
• One of the oldest colleges in the Philippines
• Founded by Don Juan Geronimo Guerrero, a retired
Spanish Officer
10. Colegio de Santa Isabel(1632)
• One of the Oldest College in the Philippines
• Originally for Spanish Orphans and daughters of
Spanish Soldiers
• Opened to Filipino girls on 1733 by order of Queen
Isabel II
• Changed to Real Colegio de Sta. Isabel
11. Ateneo de Manila University(1859)
• Originally Escuela Municipal de Manila
• After 100 years, it was called Ateneo de Manila.
AMERICAN COLONIZATION(1898-1933)
1. The Americans have also created more public
hospitals than the former colinizers. The
Philippine General Hospital and College of Medicine
and Surgery.

2. Old Laboratorio Municipal was absorbed by the

Bureau of Government Laboratories created by
Philippine Commission 1901

3.Bureau of Science
- In 1905, the latter was reorganized and renamed
Bureau of Science. It is remained the principal
government research establishment until the end of
Second World War.
- It is now called Department of Science and Technology
( DOST)

4. Weather Bureau
- It is now called (PAGASA)

5. Bureau of Health
- It is now called (DOH)
