environment. When thinking about my philosophy of education I can split it up into 3 key
components, the structure of the classroom that I feel is optimal for student success, the role of
a teacher, and the goals that I will set for my students. In terms of classroom structure, we
researched three structures that were practiced in the past and in the present day. I believe
that Frieres concept on classroom Structure is the best fit for any educational environment.
Friere harshly criticized the Banking Concept of education which sees students as passive,
empty receptacles to be filled by the wise all-knowing teacher and instead we should adhere to
a model that suggests that teachers and students are equal and are both open to learning from
one another. This model allows for critical thinking and cooperation in the classroom. When it
comes to the role of a teacher, I believe that it is crucial to build an inclusive environment
which allows for all students to express themselves freely. Jonathon Kozol stated that as
educators we need to “lower the barriers between the students classroom and home” and I
believe that is true. As educators we need to understand that our students academic work isn’t
the only thing that is playing a part in their overall mental and emotional health. Educators
need to understand a students needs in order to succeed which can be expressed by Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is often shown as a pyramid in which each
level starting at the basic physiological needs such as food, water, and shelter and progressing
towards self-actualization or our need for acceptance and creativity are crucial for one's sense
of motivation. With this in mind we need to understand our students resources and what we
can do to help if one of their levels isn’t being addressed properly. My goal for my students is
that they not only know how to apply the content that they are learning, but they understand
the content. I hope to achieve this goal with the use of critical thinking and problem solving in
the classroom.
I will express my philosophy of education with a podcast which is imbedded within a website
Throughout my EDT 180 course my classmates and I have learned several different
types of technology that can be implemented into the classroom such as podcasts, websites,
and powerpoints. In this Expression Module I am required to select one of these mediums and
use it to express my TEL 111 Philosophy of Education. I will be using both a website and a
podcast in order to do so. The first page of the website will include an introduction of myself
and my history in the education field, some basic history of any leadership position I’ve held
while in school, and what major I am pursuing at Arizona State University centered between
some images of myself. On a different page of my website will be all of the research I have
completed in my TEL 111 class regarding the education system. The second to last page on my
website will include a link to my podcast with an image of my cover photo and a brief
description of what will be covered in the podcast. The final page will be a contact form where
the viewers of my website can contact me personally regarding any questions, concerns, or
constructive criticism they may have with my website or podcast. My podcast will be about
what I believe is my current philosophy of education and why it is what it is. I chose these
particular mediums because I feel that they would allow for the most creativity when it comes
There are many potential benefits of using my chosen mediums to express my tel 111
Philosophy of Education. One potential benefit of using a podcast within a website would be
that these mediums offer the most amount of information to my audience about who I am as a
person, where I stand in the education field, the research I have completed, and what my
Philosophy of Education actually is. Another potential benefit of using a podcast within a
website would be that the website aspect of my project would allow for a contact page in which
anyone who is viewing my website can reach out to me with any potential questions or
concerns. The contact sheet is important to me because I believe that you must be willing to
accept constructive criticism with anything that you do in life. A final potential benefit of using
a podcast within a website would be that it allows me to include images of myself which
engages the audience on a more personal level. These potential benefits of using my chosen
mediums to express my TEL 111 Philosophy of Education are why I chose these mediums and
will provide the optimal way to express myself with the most amount of information.
Although I have constructed an extremely detailed plan and storyboard for my Expression
Module Project there are still some challenges of using the mediums in which I have chosen to
express my TEL 111 Philosophy of Education. One of the major challenges would be the limited
amount of time that I have to complete it. Since I chose two separate types of mediums that will
be working together to convey my Philosophy of Education that means I will practically be
doing double the work. Another challenge would be navigating weebly and constructing my
actual website. Since I’m pretty unfamiliar with the inner workings of weebly I will be learning
how to work with the software while also creating the website which will be very time
consuming. I will combat these challenges with a lot of preparation and time management.

Artist statement
My current philosophy of education is derived from the research I have completed in only one
of my classes. Ideas, beliefs, and standards change over time. One crucial part of being an
educator is the willingness to adapt the content in which you are trying to teach your students
to your student’s needs. It is unclear where we, as a society, will be when it comes to education
reform. With that said it is clear that my philosophy is subject to change which is necessary.
Although my philosophy of education will change as time goes on I believe that a few major
components will still be present in my future philosophy of education. One major component of
my current philosophy of education that I feel will still be present in my future philosophy of
education would be the overall role of a teacher. As an educator I will understand the resources
that my student’s will have in order to guarantee their success in my class. I will express this
by setting up parent-teacher conferences, not only for students who aren’t doing well in my
class, but for all students. By doing this I am engaging the parents in their children’s education,
while also directing them with what they can do to help their child continue to succeed.
Another major component of my current philosophy of education that I feel will still be present
for my students. As an educator I will guarantee that all of my students are fully
understanding the content in which I am teaching them. I will express this by providing
multiple ways to understand one thing and providing extra help for students who still aren’t
understanding. A final major component of my current philosophy of education that I feel will
still be present in my future philosophy of education would be the aspect of cooperation in my
classroom. As an educator I will make sure that my students are cooperating in my classroom
and are helping one another further understand the content. I will express this by allowing
students to guide their peers learning in class by presenting the content I’d like them to further
understand since I feel that the best way to truly understand a topic is to teach it. These
