Essential Question(s): What are the themes in symbols in short stories.

Learning Standards: RL.9-10.2: Determine a theme or a central idea a text and analyze in de-
tail it’s development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and re-
fined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text
RL.9-10.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of
what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
RI.9-10.1.a: Develop factual, interpretive, and evaluative questions for fur-
ther exploration of the topics

Learning Objectives: Students will be able Assessments: Students will be broken up

to locate the themes of a text and symbols of into teams and each team will be given
a rather difficult text. about 20 minutes to breakdown the story
and iden?fy the themes and symbols. Stu-
dents will be given a large sheet of paper in
which they will list the themes and decorate
with markers or colored pencils. Students
will then vote on the best and it will be hung
on the wall. ABer this, students will be
emailed The Storm by Kate Chopin that they
will read individually. Ques?ons will be at-
tached that can be finished for homework if
not finished in class

Procedure:

Anticipatory Set: When students enter the desks will be broken up into groups of five
which would be different then the typical set up and on each table a poster board and coloring
utensils will be laid out.

Initial Phase
Step 1: A Do Now will be put up on the board: without notes students will answer, what
is an essential theme and 2 symbols in “The Tell Tale Heart” (Slide 17)
Step 2: After the Do Now I will collect the homework and give a brief overview of yes-
terday’s lesson after which students will be broken up into groups of 4-5 students (Instructions
on slide 19)
Step 3: The students will take out their copies of the story and the students will be given
poster board and markers and colored pencils they will have about 20 minutes
to find the themes and symbols of the text and decorate their board.
Step 4: After they are finished they will present their boards in the front of the class and
the class will vote on which one will be put on the wall for the remainder of the
year.
Step 5: After the voting has concluded, students will be emailed The Storm by Kate
Chopin. Students will be given a packet with questions for The Storm that will be
finished for homework if not finished in class.

Middle Phase
• Guided Practice: In order to check the understanding of the story, while students
work in their groups I will walk around and ask questions such as “What did you
think of the story?” and “Do you have any questions about the story?”. I will also
be observing the work that the groups will be doing on their posters to make sure
they understand the objective of the assignment. This activity will help me under-
stand how the students view the text, as well as check their understanding of sym-
bols and theme. I will also circulate around the classroom after the students finish
their posters to see how the students understand The Storm by Kate Chopin.
• Independent Practice: As extra practice for theme, students will be given a short
story (The Storm by Kate Chopin) to read and analyze the themes and symbols of
which will be collected the next class.

Concluding Phase
• To conclude the class, I will explain what the students will be doing for homework.
