4
12 Selected Research and Development Work
12.1 Design and Manufacture of Pull-out equipment for use in laboratory experiments
for the Department of Civil Engineering, UDSM.
This project was a result of an inquiry by the Civil Engineering Department, Faculty of
Engineering for a machine for use in laboratory experiments. This machine was
required to be able to pull out a metal strip embedded in soil, while applying a rated
load. Being laboratory equipment, for use in research work, accuracy in the design
and production process was of prime importance. I was involved in the design,
manufacture and installation of the equipment.
12.2 Design and Manufacture of a Neutralizing Tank for processing cotton seed oil.
Project undertaken for M/s Highway Bakeries of Dar es Salaam.
This project was the result of an inquiry from Highway Bakeries of Dar es Salaam
who needed a neutralizing tank for refining cottonseed oil. I was involved in the
design of the tank, agitator and heating element. The unit was manufactured at IPI,
installed and successfully tested at the Highway Bakeries site at Vingunguti Industrial
Area.
12.3 Design and manufacture of telephone contact tool for TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia
Railway Authority.
The Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) needed a telephone contact tool
that was to be used by its workers while working at remote sites along the railway.
Work involved the design of the tool and its fabrication, using locally available raw
materials. 200 units of these tools were manufactured and put to use.
12.4 Design and Manufacture of a small motor-driven concrete mixer.
This project was done under the IPI construction technology program of which I was
the coordinator. A small concrete mixer was developed and manufactured.
Preliminary Tests conducted on the machine were promising but the project was
shelved due to lack of funds.
12.5 Design and manufacture of a clutching mechanism for use with IPI (Institute of
Production Innovation) developed Red Palm Oil processing equipment.
This clutch device was developed for the IPI motorized red palm oil processing
equipment. Its function was to transfer power to different equipment that tapped
power from a single shaft coupled to a diesel engine.
12.6 Design and manufacture of a digester used in the extraction of red palm oil.
This project was undertaken under the Food Processing Technology Program at IPI.
A Practical Training Student from the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology
undertook the design work, under my supervision and a lecturer from DIT. The
machine was successfully developed and put to use in the field. The technology
proved to be successful and efforts were made to transfer it to local manufacturers.
SIDO CFW of Mbeya was one of the successful transfer partners.
12.7 Design and Manufacture of a vibrating block making machine for M/s Somo
Contractors, that is capable of producing two blocks at a time.
This project was initiated after enquiries from several visitors to IPI on the possibility
of providing them with motorized block maker. Two prototypes were made that

5
were successful but needed further work. Design improvements were made, but the
project was shelved due to lack of funds.
12.8 Design and manufacture of a hollow block-maker used in the production of fencing
blocks.
This project was initiated as a result of a customer enquiry. The machine was
designed and manufactured at IPI. Testing was successful.
12.9 Design modification of a standard block-maker.
This project involved the lowering of the height of the existing IPI manual block
maker and redesigning its ejection mechanism. I was involved in the design,
manufacture and testing of the machine.
12.10 Design and manufacture a machine for production of sisal briquettes for MSc.
research work.
This project was the result of a need for a briquetting machine for conducting MSc.
Research. The machine was designed based on the CINVA Ram mechanism.
Manufacturing was done at IPI and subsequent testing proved successful. The
machine was successfully used in the research.
12.11 Design and manufacture of a charcoal briquetting machine for TIRDO (Tanzania
Industrial Research Organization.
This project was the result of an enquiry by TIRDO for a machine for producing
charcoal briquettes. The machine for sisal briquettes was modified to cater for their
needs. Work was completed and the machine delivered to TIRDO.
12.12 Design and manufacture of an Amalgamating barrel for extracting gold from gold
concentrate using mercury.
This project was undertaken under the Mining and mineral processing technology
program at IPI. It was the result of research done in the field on the hazards of
handling mercury during gold extraction. The prototype was developed and
successfully tested in the field.
12.13 Design and Manufacture of a Grain Mill for milling red sorghum (2010).
This project was a result of a request from Dar Brew Ltd, who needed a machine for
milling red sorghum which is very abrasive. The prototype was developed and
successfully tested at Dar Brew. Improvements on the prototype are on-going and
modifications have been incorporated in a second mill that was delivered in January
2011.
12.15 Design and Manufacture of a Grail Cleaning Machine (2012)
This project resulted from a request by a client who needed to clean maize for
storage and selling to grain millers. The prototype was developed at TDTC and
successfully tested. Several machines have been produced and are in use in
Tanzania.
