Digitally Driven Lesson Plan HCC EPI

Technology - Hadley Leonard

1. Lesson Title: Shoot for the Stars

Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Content/Subject Area: Math

ESE/ESOL/Exceptional:

• ESOL - the teacher can provide the student with manipulatives instead of drawing their
answers.

• Exceptional - the teacher can make die with larger numbers on them (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) for
use in the game.

Lesson adapted from: https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/73335

The lesson will start by introducing solving for a product, by students listening and watching a reading of
Each Orange Has 8 by Paul Giganti. Students will start to develop an understanding of multiplication and
how the scenarios relate to repeated addition. It also allows students to see how grouping the number
of objects will lead to finding the total number of objects.

1. Guided Practice:

The teacher will then move into guided practice by demonstrating the game “Circle and Stars”. The
teacher will explain the rules of the game:

• Each pair of students will be provided two die.

• Roll the first die to determine how many circles to draw. Remind the students that each circle is
representing a group.

• Then roll the second die to determine how many stars will be placed in each of the circles.
• Use the information to solve the problem to figure out total number of stars.

• The teacher then rolls the first die and draws the corresponding number of circles on chart
paper.

• Then the teacher rolls the second die and draws the corresponding number of stars inside each
circle or group.

• The teacher will then ask the students what they noticed about the groups? Also, ask what can I
use to solve the problem? Show students how they can use addition to solve a multiplication
problem.

• When you have modeled one way, ask the students if there is another way to solve the problem.

• Then, tell the students that the activity we did, will lead us into understanding multiplication
and how pictures help us solve the problem.

• Refer back to the chart to solve a multiplication problem. How many groups do we have? How
many stars are in each circle? We know that there are X groups with X stars in each circle. We
use repeated addition to help solve the problem. We will go a step further, by using
multiplication to solve the problem.

• There needs to be equal number of objects in each group when solving multiplication or it will
not work.

• Clarify or elaborate on their responses if necessary.

2. Circle and Stars Game with a Partner:

The students will then work with their shoulder partner to play the game for 10 to 15 minutes. They can
use individual blank sheets of paper to solve the problem. The teacher will explain the rules of the
game:

• Choose who will roll first by each student rolling a dice and seeing who rolls a larger
number.

• Player 1 will roll the dice to determine the number of circles to draw.

• Player 2 will roll the dice to determine the number of stars to draw in each circle.

• Each student will record their results on their blank sheet of paper. They will draw their circles
or groups and then the number of stars within each circle.

• Students will then need to show their work of how they found the total number of stars for each
roll.

• Partners will discuss what strategies they used to find the product.

• Tell students when they have two minutes left to play the game. Students will use their work
sample to share with peers.

• Teacher will circulate, monitor, and assist when needed.

3. Closure:

• Once time is up, students will then turn to the group closest to them and discuss how they
represented multiplication situations in one of their problems with the game. The teacher will
let the students know when to switch to the next group.

• Students will then take their index card and they will write down 1 to 2 sentences about what
they learned. They will then share their card with their partner.

• Students will then complete a short assessment through Survey Monkey

(https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QLBMKNZ) of the following questions. When all students
have completed the assignment, the teacher will then show students the answers and show
them how to work through each problem on chart paper or using the ELMO camera.

1. Sara saw 7 cows on a farm. Each cow has 4 legs. How many legs did she see on the farm?
(7x4=28)

2. Kim went to the store to buy some chips for 6 of her friends. Each friend will get 6 bags. How
many bags of chips did Kim buy? (6x6=36)

3. James has 4 packs of gums. Each pack has 8 sticks. How many sticks of gum does he have?
(4x8=32)

4. Nine students at a table have 9 crayons. How many crayons do the students have at their table?
(9x9=81)

Materials Needed:
• Chart paper or ELMO Camera

• Set of dice (dots or number dice) per partner

• 3x5 index cards

• Blank die

• Access to Online Book: Each Orange Has 8 Slices by Paul Giganti

• Blank sheets of paper

• Markers

Components of the lesson that are enhanced through the use of Technology...

Learning Environment:

The setting is arranged for direct instruction and individual work. The students have limited and
regulated access to the technology resources.
Teacher characteristics:

The teacher controls the type of technology and how it is used. The teacher may be pacing the students
through a project, making sure that they each complete every step in the same sequence wi th the same
tool. Although the students are more active than students at the Entry level in their use of technology,
the teacher still strongly regulates activities.

Student characteristics:

Students use technology in conventional ways and are closely directed by the teacher.

Technology solution/enhancement for…

Learning Environment:

The classroom will be arranged so that each student will be sitting near a partner. Before the lesson
starts there will be a pair of die, scratch paper, markers, and an index card provided for each student.
When it is time, students will be instructed to get their computers to access their online quiz through
Survey Monkey.

Teacher characteristics:

The teacher will demonstrate how to play the game before the students play with a partner. Once the
time has ended for the game, the teacher will instruct the students to share one of their problems with
another pair of students. The teacher will then have the stude nts write what they learned on their index
card. The teacher will provide some ideas to students of what they could write emphasizing that
multiplication is addition. Finally, the teacher will instruct the students to get their devices, guide them
to the Survey Monkey website, and then watch them as they take their online quiz. Before the students
start their quiz, the teacher will ensure every student has accessed the website. The teacher will also
monitor to make sure students are not accessing other websites or a calculator to get their answers.

Student characteristics:

Students will use die and draw circles with stars in them to work through multiplication problems during
the game with their partner. Students will then share their drawings with a nearby group. Students will
then have to write one to two sentences on an index card summarizing what they learned. Finally, they
will use their computer to access the Survey Monkey website to take an online quiz. The teacher will
direct the students through each step of the lesson.
5. Products produced by the student during this Technology Enhanced
lesson:

List & describe the Student Products (Documents, Presentations, Web Pages, Videos, etc):

1. Results of their Game - during the independent practice, students will play the dice game with
their partner. Each student will record their results on their blank sheet of paper. They will
draw their circles or groups represented by the first roll of the dice and then the number of stars
within each circle represented by the second roll of the dice. Students will then need to show
their work of how they found the total number of stars for each roll. Students will continue this
process for 10 to 15 minutes. The teacher will tell the students when they have two minutes left
to play the game. At the end of the time, students will then turn to the group closest to them
and discuss how they represented multiplication situations with the game. Each group will share
one problem. The teacher will let the students know when to switch to the next group.

2. Index Card - students will produce an index card summarizing what they learned today. Each
student will write down one to two sentences about what they learned. They will then share
what they wrote down with their partner.

3. Online Quiz through Survey Monkey - finally, students will then complete a short assessment
online through Survey Monkey . Students will be asked to use their scratch paper to work
through the problems and then input their answers into Survey Monkey. At the e nd the teacher
will give students the correct answers. The teacher will then show the students how to arrive at
the answer using the same system that was taught during the lesson.
6. Assessments used by the teacher to evaluate the student products.

List & describe the Assessments used for the Student Products (Documents, Presentations, Web Pages,
Videos, etc):

1. Dice Game - for the dice game, students will turn in the results of their dice rolls showing the
number of circles for each roll with stars inside to indicate the second roll. Students should also
display their work of how they added together the total number of stars to arrive at the answer.
Student success on this assignment will be shown by their drawings and showing their addition
work.

2. Index Card - for the summarizing index card, students will be measured on whether or not they
wrote down one or two sentences.

3. Survey Monkey Quiz Questions - for the quiz, students will be asked to also turn in their scratch
paper showing their work. The teacher will also look through the answers each student
submitted. Students will be provided the solutions at the end of the quiz with the teacher
showing their work to the students.
7. Use the Technology Integration Matrix to code the lesson (provide
evidence).
