3. Antennas

3. Antennas

Overview This chapter describes the available integrated antenna types per frequency
band.

Each frequency band supports two antenna polarization types as described

below:

• Single polarization: requires only one radio unit.

• Dual polarization: requires two radio units.

• The single polarization antenna includes the mounting bracket.

• The dual polarization antenna includes the mounting bracket and the
OMT for XPIC operation.

For package box dimensions and gross weight please instruct the
Appendix A: Package Dimensions & Weights on page 57.

Antennas, Continued

OMT overview Orthomode Transducers (OMTs) are 3-port microwave waveguide systems
that split the input power into two parts (based on polarization separation),
consequently, allow the simultaneous operation of two outdoor radio units
(ODUs). Since the devices provide high inter-port isolation and low return
loss, their application together with high performance antennas lead to use
of two independent transmission channels on a single antenna at the same
time.

Orthomode Transducers (OMTs) separate horizontal and vertical

polarizations

vertical (V)

V+H OMT

horizontal (H)

OMT can be directly mounted on antennas (as shown below) that have
circular waveguide connector. Interfaces are available for several types of
antennas from several manufacturers.

OMT included into packaging of the dual polarization antenna for XPIC
operation.

4. Coupler

4. Coupler

Overview The coupler (with two ODUs mounted on it) is used when hot standby
(asymmetrical coupler) or 2+0 (symmetrical coupler) operation modes is
needed using only one antenna (see below figure). The coupler / hybrid is a
3-port microwave system that splits the input RF power into two parts
(picture 3 below). For typical coupling coefficients (dB) please refer to
Coupler order codes on page 31.
Intracom Telecom provides specially designed antennas (called integrated
antennas with diameter up to 1.8 m or 6 ft) onto which it can directly be
mounted the coupler without the need of a waveguide. In case of a non-
integrated antenna, the appropriate mounting kit should be in order to mount
the coupler onto the mast and connect the coupler to the antenna through a
waveguide.

Coupler The coupler / hybrid provide high inter-port isolation and low return loss.
application Combined with a single-polarized, high-performance antenna, the coupler /
hybrid allows the concurrent transmission of two independent channels over
the link.

Two configurations are possible:

Configuration Description
Two ODUs are used in a hot standby 1+1
configuration for increasing link availability
1+1 link
and reliability (see Coupler installation
diagram on page 28)
Two ODUs are used, operating in two
different frequency channels, for doubling
2+0 link
the transmission capacity (see Coupler
installation diagram on page 28)

IF Connectors

Selection The IF connectors are used for the termination of the IF cable (ACC-CI-VV-
criteria VV-D4 & ACC-CI-VV-VV-D2).

The selection of IF connector type should be based on:

• IF cable diameter (1/4″ and 1/2″). Two IF connector types (straight
and R/A) are available for each IF cable diameter.
• Number of modems / IF tails at IDU side.
• ODU type and configuration.

For detailed instructions on how to select appropriate type and number of IF

connectors, see par. “Selection details” on next page.

For all ODU types, one straight connector should be used for connection per
IF tail.

ODU side:

ODU Type ODU Configuration IF Connector Type

ODU-CFe Any One straight per ODU-CFe.

ODU-CFs Single ODU-CFs onto antenna According to the specific position of the ODU-CFs onto
the pole.

With coupler / OMT One straight per ODU-CFs.

ODU-CF Single ODU-CF onto antenna According to the specific orientation of the ODU-CF. (1)
