Solving Systems of Equations
Educational Objectives:
• The students will be able to solve systems of equations.
• The students will be able to understand the academic language for this section.
Assessment on Learning:
• The students will be informally assessed using a task sheet that will be provided.
Central Focus
Academic Language
Language Function (select 1):
Identify a learning task from your plan that provides students with opportunities to practice using
the language function identified above:
The students will be able to identify the system of linear expression that will be given to them.
Then, the students will have to identify which method is the most appropriate and effective
method to evaluate the problem. Once they have done this, they have to identify the values for
each variable.
Additional Language Demands. Given the language function and learning task identified above,
describe the following associated language demands (written or oral) students need to understand
and/or use:
Vocabulary:
• Variable: a symbol for an unknown number
• Equation: a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal
• System of equations: a collection of two or more equations with the same set of unknows
Plus at least one of the following:
Syntax-
• Equal sign (=) is defined as two things being the same or holding the same value.
Materials:
• Textbook
• Task Sheet
• White board markers
• White board erasers
• Teacher’s notes
• Pencils
• “Good morning, class! How was everyone’s weekend? Today we will be learning how to
solve systems of equations. First, we will work on an activity with a partner. I will write
the problem, and you and your partner have ten minutes to solve it.”
Questions to Ask
1. Comprehension: What is the difference between an equation and systems of equations?
2. Analysis: In which cases is one method more effective than the other?
3. Knowledge: What do we already know about equations?
4. Comprehension: How can we verify that our answer is correct?
5. Application: How can we apply this knowledge to systems of equations with more than two
variables?
Conclusion/Summary:
• To summarize this lesson, we will review the three methods to solving a system of
equations.
• “Before we leave today, let us summarize what we learned today. What are the different
methods in solving a system of equation? How can we identify which method is most
effective? Great job today everyone. Next week we will learn how to multiply powers
with the same base.”
