Estimation and Construction

Management
Rate Analysis
Rate analysis
• How do I estimate the cost of a given
unit of work?
– Determine the cost of materials
– Determine Labour costs
– Determine costs of equipment
– Determine overhead charges
• “Schedules of rates” such as DSR
provide a useful set of guidelines
Rate Analysis for Concrete
• What is the cost of 10 cu.m of RCC
1:2:4, given that cement costs Rs. 240
per bag, sand costs Rs. 120 per cu.m
and aggregate costs Rs. 165 per cu.m?
Some basic facts

• 1 cu.m of cement = 1440 kg

• Weight of one bag of cement = 50 kg
• To identify volumetric composition of
cement sand, aggregate in 10 cu.m of
1:x:y RCC mix
– Volume of cement, Vc = 16.5/(1+x+y)
– Volume of Sand, Vs = x*Vc
– Volume of aggregate Va = y*Vc
Solution
• Volume of cement in 10 cu.m of 1:2:4
RCC is
– 16.5/(1+2+4)=2.36 cu.m
• Volume of sand is
– 2.36 x 2 = 4.72 cu.m
• Volume of aggregate is
– 2.36 x 4 = 9.44 cu.m
Rates
• 1 cu.m of cement = 1440 kg
• 50 kg of cement costs Rs. 240
• Hence 2.36 cu.m costs
– (1440x240/50)x2.36 = Rs. 16,312.32
• 4.72 cu.m of sand costs
– 4.72x120 = Rs. 566.4
• 9.44 cu.m of Aggregate costs
– 9.44x165 = Rs. 1557.6
• Total Cost = Rs. 18436.32

Charges

Labour for 10 cum of concrete

3.5 Nos. Mason II Class Rs. 225.00 each/day

5.5 Nos. Mazdoor I Class Rs. 150.00 each/day

16 Nos. Mazdoor II Class Rs. 120.00 each/day

Problem
• The contractor who quotes for this work has a
fleet of lorries. The average rate of
transportation of materials per kilometre
works out to Rs. 20 excluding handling
charges. Lorry capacity is 5 cum.
• The Contractor wants to add 10% of the cost
towards overhead charges and 10% towards
his profit. Work out the rate to be quoted for
R.C.C. 1:1.5:3 per cum
Solution
• Cost of Materials at Project Site

• Cement – Rs. 240 per bag (50 kgs)

• Sand
• Cost of sand at quarry = Rs. 120 per cu.m
• Transportation charges for 5 cu.m truck = 35x20 = Rs. 700
• Transportation charges pre cu.m = 700/5 = Rs. 140
• Handling charges – Rs.5 per cu.m
• Cost of Sand at Project Site = Rs. 265 per cu.m

• Cost of 20 mm Aggregate
• Cost of sand at quarry = Rs. 140 per cu.m
• Transportation charges for 5 cu.m truck = 40x20 = Rs. 800
• Transportation charges pre cu.m = 800/5 = Rs. 160
• Handling charges – Rs.7 per cu.m
• Cost of Sand at Project Site = Rs. 307 per cu.m
Data for 10 cu.m of RCC 1:1.5:3

• Vol of Cement = 16.5/(1+1.5+3) = 3

cu.m

• Vol of sand = 4.5 cu.m

• Vol of Aggregate = 9 cu.m

Rate to be quoted
• This is for 10 cu.m
• Rate per cu.m of 1:1.5:3 concrete = Rs.
2974.40
• Overhead is 10% of 2974.4 = 297.44
• Cost of Concrete plus overhead = 3271.84
• Profit is additional 10% = Rs. 327.18
• Hence Total cost to be quoted for the work
= Rs. 3599.02 per cu.m
