INTERNATIONAL FACULTY
John Duncan is a Consultant Neurologist specialising in epilepsy, practicing at the National
Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London and at Epilepsy Society in
Chalfont St Peter, UK, He was appointed Professor of Neurology at the UCL Institute of Neurology
in 1998. From 2012 to 2018 he was Clinical Director of the National Hospital for Neurology and
Neurosurgery. In 2004 he received the annual Clinical Research recognition award of the
American Epilepsy Society. He is past-President of the UK chapter of ILAE.

In 2005 he was elected Ambassador for Epilepsy and to be a Fellow of the Academy of Medical

Dr. John Stern is a Professor in the UCLA Department of Neurology and Director of the
Department’s Epilepsy Clinical Program. He is also Director of UCLA Medical Center’s Epilepsy
Residency Training Program and Co-Director of its Seizure Disorder Center.

Dr. Stern’s professional time comprises lecturing, mentoring, an active clinical practice
exclusively for seizures, and a primary research focus on functional MRI of brain networks and
their relationship to epilepsy and cognitive function. His other research activities investigate the
delivery of epilepsy care and novel diagnostics and treatments for medication resistant epilepsy.
John M. Stern
MA, MD, FAES, FANA, FAAN
Dr. Stern’s publications include 3 books and over 100 research papers and reviews. He has
lectured on clinical and research topics throughout the United States and internationally, and has
received the UCLA School of Medicine’s highest award for clinical teaching and the UCLA
Department of Neurology’s highest teaching award. He has served on the Professional Advisory
Board for the Epilepsy Foundation and continues to serve on committees for the Epilepsy
Foundation and the American Epilepsy Society. He also is a member of the editorial board for the
International Journal of Epilepsy.

Dr. Stern received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. His
neurology residency and then epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology fellowship were at UCLA.
Prior to medical school, he received concurrent bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical
biochemistry from Wesleyan University.
