Lebron James is said to be one of the best NBA players of all time.

Lebron James
is an outlier. He came from a very bad neighborhood in Akron, Akron is a poverty
stricken city within in Ohio. He rose from the projects to become one of the worlds
biggest inspirations. Lebron James is going to be inducted into the NBA hall of fame
after he retires, and after he does this he will leave a lasting legacy. Lebron James has
changed the culture of basketball and in some ways poverty. Sure some but not all
basketball players have made it out of poverty but none are as good as Lebron James,
because he is as good as he is he is more praised than others. People who grow up in
poverty now have this sense of achievement that they wish to climb to because of
Lebron, they see him and all he has and they push themselves to get themselves out of
the projects and into a better place in life. People can look at his legacy and be
reminded that they can achieve that with hard work.
Lebron James only really had one advantage but what gave him the success he
has today is some opportunities that he had. His one advantage is his height, height is a
big thing in the NBA, most NBA players are over six foot three. Although had that one
advantage he also had some opportunities. Lebron had the opportunity to play
basketball day in and day out in Akron, this led to him getting looked at in highschool
and eventually being seen as a possible prospect in the NBA draft. With Lebron getting
that opportunity he was able to practice a lot. Lebron most definitely got in over 10,000
hours of practice. Lebron became better and better with all this practice, he was able to
get this practice through his advantage and opportunity that he received. He was an
outlier, many athletes have parents supporting them and helping them get them to the
top with top of the line equipment...etc.
Now after Lebron was drafted he accumulated many advantages. Even though
Lebron was now in a league with many other people he still was an outlier, these other
players had both their parents and didn’t come from nothing. Lebron had his mother and
basketball growing up, that's it, on his Wikipedia page it says “His father, Anthony
McClelland, has an extensive criminal record and was not involved in their life.” People
thought you have to have all the right advantages to become the best but Lebron didn’t
have any of that. Now that Lebron was in the NBA he had all the advantages he ever
wanted, he had great coaches and great equipment, he practiced probably another
10,000 hours and became even better. So now he continues to use these accumulated
advantages and continues to practice so that he will remain a great outlier. Now he is a
well known outlier.
An outlier has advantages, opportunities, practice and they leave a legacy
according to Gladwell, this may be true but you can never tell to what degree every
outlier will have these things. Its different for every single outlier, it doesn’t matter which
one of those things they have but as long they have it they will do something with it, it
can be either good or bad. An outlier comes in all shapes and forms and come from
anywhere, an outlier is completely unpredictable. So all people can hope is if you give
this list of things that they will grow to become something. I look up to Lebron myself not
just because he is an outlier and has become something but because what he has done
as an outlier, he gives back and makes sure other outliers might have more opportunity
and more advantages to become something bigger than they ever imagined.
