Introduction

We commonly use mustard oil extracted from mustard

seed,groundnut oil,rich tran oil,soyabean oil etc..
Essential oils are volatile compounds present in plants. They have
different aromas and complex mixture of
esters,alchohols,aldehydes,ketones,etc.. They usually present in
seeds or flower of plants.
Common examples of pleasant smelling volatile oils are clove oil,
peppermit oil,sandal wood oil,cinnamon oil,cardomon oil,aniseed oil
etc..
These are non polar solvent compounds and hence are soluble in non
polar solvants such as ether, benzene etc.. Oils such as oil of winter
green (methyl salicylate),camphor, eucalptus have medicinal use also.

How to extract oil from seeds?
The essential oils are esters and
organic solvents such as petrolium ,ether ,alchohol ,acetone ,chloro
form etc.. These oils are extracted by boiling with solvents in which
they are most soluble and then the extract is distilled to remove the
solvent and essential oils are recovered. The extraction is carried out
in a soxhlet extractor. The use of soxhlet extractor ensures maximum
extraction with a limited quality of the solvent
Anissed essential oil

Method of extraction: stream distillation

Colour: colourless or pale yellow liquid
Botanical name: pimpinella anisum
Constituents: camphene, linalool, anethole,
saprole, anisaldehyde, acetoanisole.
experiment
Aim:
To extract essential oils present in saunf(aniseed).
Materials Required:
Distillation flask, tripod stand, conical flask, ether, seeds etc..
Theory:
The term essential oil means oil derived from the essence of
plants. the oils are obtained from the seeds by process of steam
distillation. The techniqe of stream distillation permits the seperation
of volatile components from non-volatile components.
Thus, stream distillation reduces the risk of decomposition of
essential oils.
Procedure:
1.Take 100 g of crushed aniseed in a conical flask and add 100 ml
of petrolium ether to it.
2.Close the mouth of flask and shake well.
3.Leave the flask for 24 hours at room temperature.
4.After 24 hours filter the solution and collect the filtrate.
5.Step up the apparatus as shown.
6.The ether gets distilled off 60-70 centigrades and oil is left
behind.
7.Find the weight of the extracted essential oils.
Observation:
1. Weight of anissed taken=100g
2.Weight of oil extracted=xg
3.Percentage of essential oil=x/100*100=x%
4.colour of oil=
5.odour of oil=
Other essentiel oils:
CINNAMON:it contains cinamaldehyde

VANILA: It contains vannilin(vannila essence)
