ASSIGNMENT – I (20 Marks)

Descriptive Questions
An electrical machine has a final steady temperature rise of 75oC at full load and a heating time
constant of 3 hours. The copper loss is twice the iron loss. Calculate the temperature rise the
1.
electrical machine at the end of the following load cycle after stating from cold condition: Full load
for 2 hours, no load for 1 hour and 20% over load for 1 hour.

Design a suitable commutator for a 350kW, 600rpm, 440V, 6poles DC generator having an
2. armature diameter of 0.75m. The number of coils is 288. Assume suitable values wherever
necessary.

A 4 pole, simplex wave wound armature has 25 slots and 25 coils. The commutator has 25
3.
segments. Work out the details and draw the progressive wave winding diagram.

Short Questions

1 Discuss the significance of rating of electrical machine.

Why the temperature of an electrical machine increases when the load on the machine is
2
increased?

3 How to design a Commutator diameter?

4 State the factors which decide the main dimensions of DC Machine.

5 Name the factors that influence the choice of specific electric loading.
