SITE ENGINEERING TECHNICAL BULLETIN

Calculation of Power SETB-61 v2

Requirements for New Sites 16 February 2018

Overview For further information

Following the introduction of the Huawei power system, Contact:

and of higher-capacity batteries, there has been some Site.engineering@vodafone.com.au
confusion about the power equipment (batteries and
rectifiers) to be configured at new sites. References:
 SETB-68 Calculation of power
Impact requirements for existing sites
 SED-050 Battery Calculator
New sites
Distribution:
This technical bulletin provides guidance for the
calculation of the number of rectifiers and batteries This bulletin is for distribution to:
required at Greenfield sites, including shelters, ODUs,  Build Suppliers
and in-situ rooms, where rectifier systems are used. It
 Site Controllers
does not apply to solar-powered sites, Small-Cell sites,
or sites where the DC power is provided by others.

JV sites with a single power system must be referred to Do not use after:
the Central Standards Manager, who will determine the
power system configuration for the site. No expiry date

Existing sites

See SETB-68 for details.

Actions

The Site Designer must obtain the following information about the site, from the EBP:

1. What is the type of site (hub, non-hub, transmission-only, etc)?

2. How many power systems are to be deployed at the site (one or two)?
3. How many sectors are to be deployed by each operator?
4. How many technologies are to be deployed on each sector by each operator?
5. Are any microwave radio links to be deployed?

With this information, calculate the DC current for each power system as follows (see the example on
the next page):

DC Current = base value + RF value + transmission value

where:
- base value = 5
- RF value = 7 x nr of technology units x nr of sectors
- Transmission value = 0 if no microwave dishes used, 3 if microwave dishes present

Site Engineering Technical Bulletin
Open the Battery Calculator (SED-050), and enter the DC Current value for the Vodafone power
system, and the capacity of the batteries selected for the site. The Calculator will list how many
battery strings, and how many rectifier modules, are to be provided for the Vodafone power system at
each type of site. Record the number of batteries and the number of rectifiers that the Calculator
presents for the site’s type.

If two power systems are required at the site, enter the DC Current value for the Optus power system,
and the battery capacity, to provide an estimate of the back-up hours for the Optus equipment, and
the number of rectifier modules. The number of battery strings is always 5 for 100Ah batteries, and 3
for 210Ah batteries.

Example

A new eJV site with two power systems is to be constructed with four Vodafone technology units and
five Optus technology units on each of three sectors. The site has a single microwave link to another
site for both operators. The power system is Huawei, and 210Ah batteries are to be used.

DC Current Calculations:

DC Current (Vodafone) = base value + RF value + transmission value

(remember: RF value = 7 * nr of TUs * nr of sectors)

= 5 + (7 * 4 * 3) + 3

= 92 Amps

DC Current (Optus) = base value + RF value + transmission value

(remember: RF value = 7 * nr of TUs * nr of sectors)

= 5 + (7 * 5 * 3) + 3

= 113 Amps

Using the Battery Calculator (SED-050), enter 92 as the Power Supply Current Reading, and select 210
from the battery capacity drop-down list. The first row (“Non-hub site”) shows the values for the eJV
Vodafone power system: 1 string of batteries and 3 rectifiers are shown as required.

Enter 113 as the Power Supply Current Reading, and 210 for the battery capacity. The last row shows
the values for the eJV Optus power system: 3 hours (estimated) battery backup, with 3 strings of
batteries and 4 rectifiers required.
