INFERENCE NEW SETTLEMENTS PONDICHERRY

 Pondicherry has some of the most treasured monuments of French architecture. It is also the seat of
Aurobindo Ashram, and close to Auroville in adjacent Tamil Nadu, both of which attract a large num-
ber of spiritual tourists from India and abroad. Also attracts visitors for the cheap rate of bevarages
from tamilnadu . Pondicherry already has a high population density. Therefore it warrants a very
careful promotion of tourism so as to sustain the environment.

 Tourism results in increase in a region’s population by increasing the floating population at any given
point in time. This generates an additional demand on the infrastructure like accommodation,
transport, power, water, sewage and other support services necessary to cater to the increase in
population.

 Though new settlements doesn’t have any tourists attraction spots but the population and float-
ing population was huge .The streets were highly densed with commercial and residential building.

 VEHICLE CONGESTION

 There is heavy vehicular traffic during the peak hours due to large growth in the vehicle population.
Despite the resulting congestion on the roads there is only limited scope for widening of the existing
roads.

 ABSENCE OF PEDESTRIAN PATHWAY

 The city has nice pathways with street lamps and trees providing shade with presence of street
furniture in the promenade and white town , new settlements doesn’t have pedestrian pathways
even in the primary roads (anna salai, thiruvalluvar salai, kamarajar salai, maraimalai adigal salai).

 ABSENCE OF PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE

 The city has only one pedestrian bridge in maramalai adigal salai (connecting new bus stand )both
sides of the road. Though it was there it was not maintained properly ,it doesn’t has an pergola,
untidy lack for cleanliness.

 And the junctions with absence of traffic lights and pedestrian bridges people struggles to cross the
roads.

 LACK OF BREATH SPACES

 The new settlements were densly built with residential and commercial spaces very closely but it
doesn’t have any open space or parks etc…Due to this children play only on streets.

 ABSENCE OF SIGNAGES

 New settlements has grown irregularly it has a mixed and irregular pattern of road with different
widths ,few street has signages with map but mostly there were absence of signages.

 LITTER AND DRINAGEFLOW

Litter and drainage overflow Pondicherry region does not have covered or underground drainage sys-
tem in some parts of the region. The increasing resident and floating population in the region has led
to overloading of the existing drainage and sewerage system.
INFERENCE NEW SETTLEMENTS PONDICHERRY

 Littering , this has become a major irritant in many tourist attractions because of increasing use of
non-biodegradable materials by tourists like plastic water bottles, plastics for packaging etc. This
completely defaces both the natural and built environment.

 These things affect both physically and mentally ,causing disease .It was an visual and sensory
abstraction to an city . As we studied this during summer days the effect of this would be more
worse on rainy seasons.

 ABSENCE OF PARKING SPACE

 New settlements doesn’t has proper parking facilities only few large commercial shop provide parking
facilities others doesn’t.so they park on the roads making traffic.

 ABSENCE OF GREEN COVER

 New settlements doesn’t have trees expect few areas ,the roads doesn’t have any green cover or an
landscape feature. Leading to non absorption of carbon di oxide.

 POLLUTION

 Pondicherry has a considerable level of industrial activity with large and medium industries and sev-
eral hundreds of small-scale industries. Atmospheric pollution from industrial activity and increasing
vehicle population on the roads is on the increase.

Due to increasing population, continuous inflow of visitors throughout the year and growing commer-
cial activities, there has been considerable pressure on the limited water resources in the city on one
hand, while on the other there is also rising level of water pollution in the region.

 From the above observations, it can be interpreted that if tourism is allowed to be developed without
careful planning, it will lead to strain on the scarce resources like water, power and land in some of
the areas. There is a need for careful development planning in Pondicherry to keep the environmental
conditions in balance.
