Reflection:
What the experts believe is the same with what I believe with regard to Amber’s case.
The employer should confront Amber directly and do some proper investigations to
see if she’s really using drugs instead of focusing on vague accusations being thrown to
her. If Amber’s really using cocaine the employer may send her to rehabilitation center
to cure her so that she could go back to her work again and start a new life.
MALDEN MILLS
Sometimes, doing the right thing is more important than profits, a lesson that Malden
Mills learned firsthand. When the factory burned down in 1995 just two weeks before
Christmas, production halted and employees assumed they'd be out of work until
the factory was rebuilt. But CEO Aaron Feuerstein extended the employees 90 days
at full pay, as well as 180 days with benefits at a cost of $25 million to Malden Mills.
After the factory was rebuilt and all of the displaced workers were rehired,
cooperation and productivity reached a new high, with 40% more business, 95%
customer and employee retention, and a production increase from 130,000 to
200,000 yards per week. However, since then, Malden Mills has been to bankruptcy
court three times, with much of the debt tied to the rebuild of the factory.
Feuerstein made employees happy, to be sure, but business students should study
this case to consider whether bold philanthropic actions will pay off in the end.
Reflection:
The action made by the CEO of Malden Mills pays off in the end and the decision
he made is the right thing to do. Even if the company suffered three times of court
bankruptcy and paid 25 million to its employees, the good thing is the company’s
production increased from 130,000 to 200,000 yards per week. The increase in
Malden Mills’ production is more than enough to compensate the 25 million cost of
paying the employees. The decision of Feuerstein to consider first the employees’
welfare than focusing on the company’s profit inspires them to work better.
A STARBUCKS ON EVERY CORNER
In 2008, Starbucks announced that they would be closing 600 US stores. Up to that
point, Starbucks stores had added new offerings, including wi-fi and music for sale,
but started to lose its warm "neighborhood store" feeling in favor of a chain store
persona. Harvard Business Review points out that in this situation, "Starbucks is a
mass brand attempting to command a premium price for an experience that is no
longer special." Meaning, in order to keep up, Starbucks would either have to cut
prices, or cut down on stores to restore its brand exclusivity. HBR's case study shares
three problems with the growth of Starbucks: alienating early adopters, too broad
of an appeal, and superficial growth through new stores and products. Harvard
recommends that Starbucks should have stayed private, growing at a controlled
pace to maintain its status as a premium brand.
Reflection:
Wi-fi and music for sale are not new to customers. For me, cutting their prices down
will not restore its brand exclusivity because one thing that made Starbucks an
exclusive brand was its premium price. Starbucks should add services/gimmicks that
are not typical and will match the price of their services and products.
Reflection:
The bright idea of catering not only to large businesses but also to small ones allows BIG
D to spread out its business risk. For me, accepting small orders will not hurt the
company’s efficiency, in fact, dead times will be reduced and BIG D may gain
additional profit from it. It isn’t impossible for small customers to bring big profits to large
businesses.
SUCCESSION PLANNING
Family businesses typically have the luxury of passing the torch down to children
after parents retire, but in some cases, there are no candidates, or the candidates
may not be right for the role. This presents a challenge when it's time to find a
successor, especially if existing employees have assumed that top level promotions
would come from within the family. So the Carlson companies had to put in great
effort to find a replacement, looking both internally and outside of the company,
ultimately finding an internal candidate who would work well with the family but
also offered plenty of experience as an executive in different industries. According
to Beverly Behan of Hay's Group, Carlson should be commended for not only
making the right decision in not hiring the heir apparent, but for handling the job
search in a calm, effective way.
Reflection:
It is right to commend Carlson for making the right decision in not hiring the heir
apparent and considering candidates from the outside with potentials and who fits the
position. Not all the time, the decision of passing the legacy down to their children is a
good decision especially when the role or the position doesn’t fit the heir. Set aside the
old tradition and try to look outside and search for the better ones with high potentials.
Reflection:
The idea of American Express in retaining retirees to train existing workforce for future
success will eliminate or lessen the retirement issues such as losing experienced and well
informed employees. The Workforce transformation group created by AMEX allows
retiring participants to mentor, share or pass the knowledge they’ve gain from long
years of working to new/existing employees. The whole organization will benefit from
this program.
STRATEGIC AD SPENDING
Advertising costs money, which many businesses find themselves short of these
days. But forgoing ad spending in favor of better profits can be a mistake. Experts
say that in a slump, one of the best things you can do is adopt or increase your
advertising strategy to attract customers. During a recession, this is especially true,
as other businesses may be cutting back on their ad spending, making your voice
even more prominent to customers. After seven years of growth, building from 30 to
300 locations, Firehouse Subs' growth fizzled, and company leaders realized they
had to do something about it. So they returned local advertising fees collected
from franchisees, not to put in their pockets, but to take hold of their own local
marketing. Sales fell even more, revealing that this was not a good strategy at the
time. Instead, Firehouse reclaimed their local marketing fee, and then gave
franchisees the option to take part in a new marketing campaign, requiring them to
pay double for local marketing, but in return, becoming part of an $8 million
advertising campaign poised for success. Experts commend Firehouse for having
the courage to ask franchisees for more money where it was needed, even when
times were tough.
Reflection:
Spending too much in advertising to attract customers may be a good strategy to
increase sales but not all the time. The company should take into consideration if
the advertising campaign really works. On the other side, Firehouse showed great
courage in asking for money to franchisees which is difficult to do for some other
companies. That courage raised the whole company for they reached success.
Reflection:
Tylenol lose almost 30% of its market share due to the incident happened in year
1982. The producer of Tylenol should’ve take proper actions like securing its
products and making sure it is safe to use before they could sell it outside. It is a right
decision for me that Johnson & Johnson pulled out all the Tylenol, because if they
continue in selling it without any changes, this might give a bad impression for the
customers.
DAVID VS. GOLIATH
It's tough to be the little guy, especially when one of the big guys becomes your
direct competition. But at Hangers Cleaners, an offbeat image and good customer
service helped them pull through when P&G opened an eco-friendly dry cleaners in
the same town. Hangers differentiated itself through van delivery service, funny t-
shirts and hangers, as well as social networking. The company also spent time
connecting with the community by partnering with local businesses and charities.
Instead of out-pricing or out-spending P&G, Hangers embraced its personality and
adopted a culture of excellent service that customers found value in. As a result,
Hangers has experienced growth while other local dry cleaners have reported flat
or declining revenues.
Reflection:
Being customer centric helps Hangers Cleaners connect with the community. Knowing
what the customers want and what are the things they value make it easy for Hangers
Cleaners to capture the hearts of their customers. The strategy that Hangers Cleaners
employed was effective for they experienced growth. It will be easy for them to
develop new products that will match the tastes of their customers because they
already analysed their customers’ personality and culture.
Reflection:
Expanding a business by partnering with another company is a coherent decision.
They will gain a lot of benefits from it like what happened to Diagnostic Hybrids.
Partnering with Qidel, a market leader in rapid diagnostics, will help Diagnostic
Hybrids gain new expertise and will open up fresh opportunities for the company as
a whole. The market share of the two companies will both increase as a result of
their partnership. A company must be careful and be wise in choosing where, when
a how to expand its customer base.
TESCO'S INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION
Tesco's move into Korea offers a classic case study of building market share
internationally. The company made some smart moves in their Korean expansion,
most notably partnering with Samsung, the leading Korean conglomerate, and
embracing the Korean way of life by operating stores as local businesses and
community centers. Tesco also made a smart move by employing nearly 100%
Koreans on staff, with only 4 British employees out of 23,000. Reports indicate that
Tesco's intelligent strategy has won over shoppers in Seoul, with 25% of Koreans
signed up for loyalty cards and sales in the billions, finding success in "cracking the
Asian tiger," where competitors such as Carrefour and Wal-Mart have failed.
Reflection:
The strategy that the company employs will have a great impact to its future state.
To make sure that Tesco's expansion will be successful, it chose Korea where
business climate is stable and we all know that the said country is now one of the
developing country. Partnering with the leading Korean conglomerate was the best
move that Tesco did. Embracing the Korean way of life will help them move up to
success and achieve a good image, thus increasing their value.
Reflection:
"Don't let yourself stuck from the inside. Try to look outside and search for better
opportunities."
Triumph found its new life by heading overseas and reached its success by
exporting. India's middle class contributes to the success of Triumph for they
embraced the vehicle as an affordable commodity. Triumph's success is an
admirable one because of its patience in waiting and overcoming all those
struggles to meet the demand in India.
BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR JOB CANDIDATES
Background checks are an issue faced by many companies, as sensitive
information is now more public than ever. OfficeDrop is no exception, as the
company scans paper into digital files, including patient records and minister
sermons, most of which require trustworthy employees who can handle documents
discreetly. Many companies offer quick, superficial checks, but for OfficeDrop
owner Prasad Thammineni, more information was required. He found a company
that would allow research to delve into a number of different sources and perform
a more comprehensive search. Other business owners offered somewhat critical
opinions of Thammineni's choice, pointing out that instead of Googling to find a
background check company, he should have asked his business network who they
were using. They also recommended that he take advantage of free resources,
including online searches and checking out social media sites to learn more about
job candidates.
Reflection:
For me, having a thorough background check for job candidates must be
performed by every company. It is to ensure the company's better future. Having
an employee with clean and good background will definitely give positive results
for the company. A company in order to be successful must have trustworthy
employees.
Reflection:
One of the best way in order to be a successful business is to have a connection or
communication between the top management and the employees. Sometimes
the great ideas can be found through the employees at lower levels. The insights
that the rank and file employees shared to the president of the MGM Grand Hotel &
Casino was a big help because when the employees are motivated, the result of
their good work will satisfy the customers whom will bring profit for the whole
company.
SOCIAL MEDIA SERVES UP CREME BRULEE
Marketing is key, whether you're a multibillion dollar company, or just a guy with a
cart full of creme brulee. But just doing it isn't enough: you have to market
effectively. Curtis Kimball, the man behind the Creme Brulee Cart, put Twitter to
work for him amassing thousands of followers and growing his business by allowing
people to follow the cart through the online service. Kimball engages with
customers and develops a personal relationship with followers online, asking for
suggestions on flavors and cart locations. Perhaps the most impressive part of this
story is the fact that Kimball has no marketing budget (Twitter is a free service), yet
enjoys an incredibly popular status and high ratings on Yelp.
Reflection:
The truth is social media was really a big help to market a certain product. Knowing
that almost everyone is using social media because of the convenient feeling it
brings to every users, social media can also be the way to introduce your products
to attract the attention of variety of customers. Through the use of social media, the
customers can easily connect with the sellers. Just like what Crème Brulee Cart did,
it used Twitter to engage with its customers and develop a personal relationship
with them. The edge of using social media in marketing products is you don’t need
to have a big amount to introduce your products to the market since it’s a free
service like Twitter.
Reflection:
Providing everything may be a good thing to do for some but not for all. It is not a
bad idea to sell variety of products in one basket to reach your customers. In the
case of Hickory Farms, they suffered a loss because of their over reaching products.
My opinion is that,Hickory Farms should monitor their sales and marketing strategy if
it is still working effectively and efficiently for the whole organization. Hickory Farms
tumble-down because of giving more than too much to their customers causing
them a loss. One good thing is they find a solution and make the right thing of
selling their products in good quality and in right quantity.
Reflection:
In the business world, it's no secret that seasoned leaders maintain successful
companies. A big part of proving your competence as an employer is your ability to
keep those that work for you fully motivated and satisfied with their conditions.
There are many factors which influence the general atmosphere within a company
such as positive work environment, boosted motivation levels, having a feeling of
fulfilment and satisfied customers. Happy employees are less likely to quit, which
means that you won't be out of precious manpower anytime soon.
Reflection:
I have the same opinion with the experts that Maclaren did the right thing in the
aftermath of the recall. The preventive action that it made for the safety of the
baby who will use those strollers helps the company avoid incidents that will cause
huge damage for the company. Maclaren proved their loyalty and dedication to
their mission of providing safety strollers for the babies.
EALING WITH LATE PAYING CLIENTS
We all hope that clients will pay on time, but the fact is that most businesses have to
deal with lateness at some point or another. How you deal with it can make all the
difference, and this case study reveals a smart strategy. When a client wrote to
check in on the progress of work, a web developer replied that she was hesitant to
work quickly for that client because she was still waiting on payments for month-old
work. This immediately got the attention of the clients, who contacted her and
discovered that their checks were not going to the right address. The problem was
solved almost instantaneously, enforcing both leverage and rewarding positive
behavior. However, it was risky, and the client criticized her for not sharing a
warning before coming to a difficult point.
Reflection:
No matter what type of business you operate, you're bound to experience them.
Habitual late payments can hurt your cash flow so you have to take actions to nip
the problems of late payments. How can you motivate your clients to pay on time.
First help them choose the right payment terms, offer small discounts for paying
early, institute a late payment fee or send them a gentle reminder when an invoice
is a week past due. There's no guarantee any of these will in every cash prevent late
payments but they will work with some customers.
Reflection:
Not only Ericsson, but many other companies have also learned from this incident.
Supply chain risk management is a necessary component of any supply chain.
Supply Chain Risk Management may lead to increased costs in the form of
prevention measures and may also lead to increased lead time. Risk exposure
always has a price, and as a company one should think through what price (or
rather cost) that is acceptable or not.
