Lab Safety

Engineers work with dangerous materials and sharp tools every day. Therefore, it is

important for them to stay safe. They do this in a plethora of ways such as using safety

equipment and using different colors to convey information. All these safety rules are regulated

by the Occupational of Safety and Health Administration(OSHA). OSHA will also have random

inspections to make sure that all Engineers are safe at their workplace.

To understand safety we must first define it. Safety is the practice taken to preserve the

life, health, and bodily integrity of individuals. Safety in the workplace is extremely important

due to the fact that it helps to protect students from hazards. In addition to the statement

previously made, it will keep students motivated. Students who practice good safety will have

higher productivity rates!

A hazard is an agent that had the potential to cause harm. The three types of hazards

include immediate, potential, and hidden. An immediate hazard is one that is visible and presents

an immediate danger. A potential hazard is one that is visible as well but becomes dangerous

when combined with other conditions. Last but not least A hidden hazard is an existing danger

hidden from plain sight.

In order to prevent the hazards stated above, we must take the following steps. We must

first identify the hazard by carrying out a workplace risk assessment. According to the business
dictionary, a workplace risk assessment is “the identification, evaluation, and estimation of the

levels of risks involved in a situation, their comparison against benchmarks or standards, and

determination of an acceptable level of risk.”The second step we must take is to determine how

employees might be at risk. Next, we must classify the risks. Lastly, we must record and review

hazards at least annually, or earlier if something changes.

As you have seen, safety is taken very seriously in the workplace and in our everyday

life. Only those who enjoy being hurt do not follow safety procedures. So next time your in the

lab remember to seek out safety equipment and follow all lab rules.
