Design of Machine Elements: Difference between Conventional and

Additive Manufacturing
In the previous years, technology has been growing at an exponential rate, due to latest invention
in research and development. The materials and structures are more efficient. Now in these days,
we clearly see that technologies process improvements enterprise with the potential to radically
improve the way manufacturers in entire product value chain to deliver more options and models
to the customers. We would discuss here two main Manufacturing process that is Conventional
and Additive process.
A process in which we produce a particular product by removing the material is called
conventional Manufacturing process. In this type of manufacturing a lot of scrap is produce. All
the machining processes such as (turning, milling, grinding, drilling) moulding, casting etc. are
conventional manufacturing process .Conventional manufacturing is also known as "Traditional
manufacturing” it has some geometrical limitations and time consuming process.
In conventional manufacturing process for metals first we make a mould for part which we
required then we melt the metal in a furnace. Then we pour this liquid metal into the mould and
let this cool. After some time we break the mould and take out the moulded metal part. Now we
start machining processes like for the finishing.
Moulding is a process in which we make our mould according to our requirements. In this process
first we make a part by wood or plastic which is required placed under the moulding box. Now
start filling the box with sand of suitable composition. Fill the mould and the sand should be
hammered continuously. Make runner and riser on the other side. Remove the part of ‘wood or
plastic’ carefully. Now dry it no moisture remains in the mould.
Casting is a process in which we melt the metal into liquid in a furnace. In this process we take
metal pieces in a crucible and place in the center of furnace ignite and start the blower. After some
time when the metal is converted into liquid remove the impurities which floating. Pour the metal
into mould until the metal goes up in riser. After cooling break the mould and take out the moulded
element.
In machining, a few tasks happen in an arranged succession to accomplish the best outcomes. We
spread three of the most well-known tasks including: turning, penetrating and processing.
Machining is an exceptionally normal and adaptable assembling process. In this way, it's
conceivable to machine different sorts of material utilizing these three techniques. Metals, plastics,
composites, and wood are for the most part conceivable work piece materials.
Addictive Manufacturing describes as “The process in which the part to be produced is constructed
by the addition of material. The construction is carried out in layers."
Addictive Manufacturing is carried out by laser beam for the fabrication of product is one of the
most useful techniques that slowly replacing the conventional manufacturing process. In the
manufacturing process the component we have to make is made by addition of layers by layers.
The process is carried out from bottom to top.
Addictive Manufacturing enables us to create 3D objects. Addictive manufacturing also knows as
"3D printing "laser addictive Manufacturing is most common process for 3D printing. In this type
of manufacturing the high energy density of a laser beam is used to rapidly vaporize a material
irrespective of its thermal, physical and chemical properties.
In additive manufacturing process first of all we make a design in computer on CAD software. The
design is given to the laser machine. Before giving command to the laser machine we spread metal
powder. By the heat of the laser it started to make the part by bottom to top. The process is very
fast. But this process is not for mass objects. We make only complex and difficult objects which
are smaller in size.
Added substance producing has capacity of more prominent plan. This implies complex gatherings
can be imprinted in one procedure which makes the assembling procedure straightforward. A large
number of the imperatives utilizing conventional assembling are diminished.
Machines are minimal and the assets required are extremely less contrasted with traditional
assembling machine. Talented work is an obligatory necessity in ordinary assembling, which is
disposed of in added substance fabricating.
Customizing is another favorable alternative in added substance fabricating. Parts can be changed
by the personal necessities. Overproduction of parts can be ceased because of production of
definite interest prerequisite. This improves the proficient use of the material. There are two
material utilized in additive manufacturing process the powder and the help material. The two
materials can be generally reused and reused improving material productivity. Added substance
producing is natural recipient since it tends to be done anyplace, decreasing the discharge of gases
because of transport.
Obviously, AM additionally has its constraints, chiefly in light of the fact that it's still being worked
on and along these lines advancing. Above all else, as of recently, AM did not appear to be
pertinent for large scale manufacturing and demonstrated certain restrictions with respect to
scaling, material size and decision. It has additionally been appeared in specific cases, post-
preparing of items is required to understand the right surface completion and dimensional
precision. Nonetheless, AM has caught the enthusiasm of numerous individuals and enterprises
that are continually taking a shot at discovering answers for these impediments and improving the
procedure and the nature of the items planned utilizing it.Another factor that has negatively
affected the ascent of AM, is the potential loss of occupations in assembling. Obviously, this is
dependably the situation with new advances and ideally individuals will adjust and build up the
new abilities that are fundamental for the new employments that it will make.
